hello all, I'm looking around for a 2nd hand VFR and been scouting bike shops and talk to some of the sellers on the forum here. Can you all share whats the kinda mileage you all have on your bikes and did anyone ever do major overhaul and at what mileage? Some of the bikes I have seen have done some decent running (100k to 150k ++) and just wonder if they would need some serious servicing or not. I know my old VFR750 has done like 70k and no need for any major stuff as running smoothly but anyhow like to know what you can share with me, thanks!

Hi jenga, i have a '99 red 5th gen with 190k on it at the moment. What kind of servicing depends on the care it's received throughout its lifetime...if the basic things like oil, filters and plugs have been done regularly according to specs, and the bike hasn't been thrashed excessively, there is little reason to doubt the integrity of the engine itself, which should be true with most modern bikes nowadays. There are reports on the net of a viffer clocking 400k+ miles on the same engine. Although that was a 4th gen 750, i guess it would be safe to say the later generations would be capable of at least as much, with proper care and maintenance.

the 5th gen bikes are well known for problems with the rectifier and associated electrical issues that will show up should a dying rectifier go unreplaced, although that has been fixed on the 6th gen vtec versions. The suspension and in particular the rear shock will usually need a rebuild or replacement after high miles. You'll feel it getting mushy/springy and bottoming out easily.

My own bike was none the worse for wear when i first took over. I have replaced:

-left and right switchgear (was fully functional, decided to replace them anyway as the switches were looking pretty worn out)

-LCD panel on the dashboard (faded and digits unreadable)

-Rectifier

-Stator coil

-brake lines (the lines under the front fairing were chafed and worn, i think due to the movement of the steering)

-front wheel bearings

I have also ordered a replacement rear shock from Hyperpro, which sells their dampers as a kit complete with springs for the front and oil, tailored specifically to your bike.

Other minor things I have noticed on my own bike are that

-there is a slight ticking sound from the engine on cold start up, which are apparently caused by dirty/worn fuel injectors

-the rubber cush dampers in the rear hub are worn out and there is free play on the rear sprocket.

-front brake master cylinder piston is leaking, fortunately the piston itself can be replaced cheaply.

The point is that at higher mileages components here and there will begin to fail, if they have not been replaced early on. It can be pretty discouraging and daunting every time you discover some new fault/problem on the bike and have to worry about coughing up even more $$$..... Fortunately there's a big community of viffer riders overseas, you can check out their forums at http://www.vfrworld.com and http://www.vfrdiscussion.com. almost any issue/problem you might possibly face with this bike will have been discussed and/or solved on the site.

I would suggest you to take your time, look for a lower mileage bike and spend the first few months just feeling out everything. Google up any problem you might discover and spend as much time reading as you can...it'll save you a lot of headache, heartache and sometimes a couple of dollars too. Lastly, find a mechanic you can communicate with and explain the problem symptoms to. it'll make their job (and yours) a lot easier when you can understand whats wrong and pinpoint the issue quickly and accurately.
