Ah....This is the second time I am encountering this.

Bike not firing up, like battery no juice.

1st time encountered about a month ago.

After top-up petrol, pressed start button, like no battery. Engine wont fire-up. Lucky near my home.

Tried a few times same.

Ready to leave the bike behind at the petrol shop.

Then 1 minute later, fire it up, no problem.....

Today happened again. Rode to Raffles Place, stop for about half and hour.

Tried to start, again like battery dead.

1 minute later, its alive.

Is my battery going to the bin already?

This is the problem I have been encountering and have mention a couple of time during our meet-up... I still would not figure out what is wrong. My problem started 1 year after riding my bike, I thought it was the battery and wasted the money changing it but no improvement...

So far, my bike have never completely die on me so I just leave the problem as it is... In my humble opinion - I dont think it is the battery problem so no point changing the battery as it is a waste of money unless the battery had been in used for some time.

i experienced these before; Prob 1 Oct 07; I have strong cranking, headlights & signals all working BUT the bike starts as it like. It had plenty of cranking sounds, battery seems ok, plugs ok(no misfiring) but couldnt start. The outcome? ignition short! i replaced the ignitions & all my prob go away.

Prob 2 in Dec 07: Poor cranking sounds. BUT good headlights & signals. horn is erratic & sometimes poor. Batt charging, but when restarting, again poor cranking. Later, engine restarted via push start BUT engine became erratic. poor revving, nO headlights, no horns & erratic engine sounds. battery DEAD. Outcome: Old worn out battery (since oct 05). Replaced them. No prob since.

other solutions includes: changing sparks plugs, carbs service, air filter checks.

can crank or not?:

My bike do not have problem starting cold, but when the bike is hot, that means after a ride, thats when it has problem. I dont think its battery problem either.

Usually when the bike is hot, cranking is weak, you twist the throttle a bit it will fire.

But the 2 incidents, like no cranking, no 'fire' at all.

Then 1 minute later, you just press the starter, it fire up.

Strange.

Anybody has been to Combine Motor at Sin Ming?

I saw big bikes like several Harley, Ducati,Triumph and BMW bikes service there.

Was there just watching the 2 middle-aged mechanics at work.

Any comments?

It was damn good company.

Bro, where you send your bike for servicing.

I am still looking for a shop that can really tune my xjr.

I think mine is still not properly tune to realy release the beast within.

HI Happy125 (and the rest of XJRs),

I usually do my servicing in Ubi with a guy name Ah Chong. So far he is very good when service and repair my bike. In addition, he gets spare parts easily. For example, my smashed my CB13 speedometer and tried to gets from other shops but they said have to order. But for Ah Chong, he got it instantly.

So, if you like further help, feel free to SMS or call me (9 430 6737).

Cheers!!!

Hi guys,

I am not too sure how XJRs really work. But basically, the look of the engine looks similar to Super 4. The symptoms sound similar to what always happen to Super 4. That is the recrifier. What I just like to suggest is to change the rectifier. But at the same time, I will check with my regular workshop.

Cheers!!

Recrifier could be a likely suspect... Maybe I will try to explain my symptons and see if it was the same thing that have happened to all of us.

When i pressed my start button, there was a "half past six" crank sound. It is like a "crank" or "half-crank" then the bike goes silent even as i was still pressing on to the start button... The symptons is like how it would be when the battery is dead... What I do is that I released the start button then press it again after 2 to 3 seconds... Sometime the bike would be able to fire up on the second try but sometime it could take up to 3 or 4 try before the engine fire up. I also feel that by turning the ignition key on and off could help...

This problem would come back on and off. Sometime for weeks it was ok and then it started again... since my bike had never completely failed to start so I just left it as it is... but if it is really the rectifier then I better go and change it as i read somewhere that the rectifier might cause other problems in other area of the bike...

well 1 way yall can check if rectifier is ok is to use an original purple yuasa batt coz got rectifier fault indicator or use universal ohm meter...start the bike and place ohm meter sensor near rectifyer..of there is reading without even touching rectifier then its leaking power. Also use meter to make sure batt is above 12 volts...if both ways is ok then tis the coil....:thumb:

dont just depend on ohm meter bros it might also be the fuse or the starter relay needs to be grounded..too much power supply may also burn the coil....sumtimes checking how the spark plug wear off may tell a different story....yall can only findout the history behind your spark plug wear and tear at tong aik beside motorworld @ short street....pics and comments available on poster...

and btw...this is what i found out abt using mothballs(naphthalene) in petrol..

Question - Does adding naphthalene (mothballs) to gasoline increase

the octane rating? The info comes from

http://www.georgenitta.com/mothballs/mothballs.htm

-----------------------------

John,

Yes, mothballs will slightly assist the octane rating of gasoline. HOWEVER, in

that grain of truth there lurks the potential for disaster. One must use very

few mothballs (naphthalene only) because the ratio of carbon to hydrogen in

the molecules makes for a very dirty burning fuel. Too many mothballs and your

engine will load up with carbon deposits -- very bad news in the performance

department.

Also DO NOT mistakenly use moth crystals (paradichlorobenzene). The chlorine

atoms in this material becomes HCl upon combustion. Hydrochloric acid (HCl) is

very destructive to engine internals.

Finally, unless your engine is high compression and in need of high octane

fuel, enhancing the octane rating of the fuel over what is required is simply

a waste of money. High octane fuel burned in an engine designed for lower

octane fuel does not increase engine power.

Regards,

ProfHoff 297

Not recommended! Mothballs are often paradichlorobenzene, not

naphthalene. The former would form HCl and oxychlorides upon combustion

which would be very corrosive to the engine cylinders. Even if it is

naphthalene, the ignition system whether old fashioned carburetor or new

fashioned solid state, is not "expecting" an aromatic hydrocarbon. The

fuel/air combustion mix is going to be very smokey and possibly foul up the

engine, the fuel injectors (if present), and make a mess of you catalytic

converter. Sounds like a good way to mess up an engine to me.

Hi All,

Redbull is right that batteries and rectifiers go hand in hand. If you find out that your rectifier is giving problem, then you need to change you battery as well. If you do not do so, you battery will soon be dead as well.

Cheers!!

well since all XJRs and naked bikes got mit up session on the 8th of jan ill have the ohm meter ready for demo..but abt wire grounding or anything else i would need to have proper blue prints to follow...im not so much of a pro u know..not even an ameture..its just that i love to observe my mechs at work and apply every thing they do for my own benefits...

yo bull, pls conferm again the mit up aite..and dont forget to clean the oil mess around your cam cover b4 applyin the gasket maker...

Title: #4 Meet-Ups

Date: 19th January 2008

Day: Saturday Night

Time: 2030hours

Venue: Kembangan MRT Station(may change*)

Dear XJRers,

I have seen more activities in the forum the past week than any other time at the SBF Forum. I seen technical discussion too by our BIg Boys of 1300s & contribution by our new member, xjrIzaac23 too.

We had a good 2007 year with 3 successful meet-ups between August 07 & December 07.

With the new year 2008 here, this is the #4 Meet Up since August 07 & our first in 2008. Hopefully we can start a regular meet-ups this calender year. How about some tourings thrown in (any tour leaders here??) & some other local activities (eg Bowling Nite, Movie Night, Family Day etc). Since the group is rather small, i would need everyone support and participations for the activities above. More will be discuss in the upcoming Jan 08 Meet-Up.

Wishing all Riders a Happy New Year & May 2008 bring more prosperity & better health this year!

I have been reading the XJR13 forum, 2002 model onwards the air-flow to carburretor are restricted, host diameter is smaller then the earlier model. By enlarging the diameter can add additional 10hp.

If there is a DIY session by our brothers here, would like to see how easy to strip our bike and see where these hosts are. Might wanna try enlarging them.

Anybody?

Good Evening XJRers & Riders,

Title: #4 Meet-Ups

Date: 19th January 2008

Day: Saturday Night
