Hi everyone, this is my first post here but I waded through pages 1 to 50, and 130 to 136, of this thread so I wouldn't have to make you all pek chek by asking for yet another repetition of the basics. I couldn't tahan through the remaining 80 pages I missed out but hopefully I've gotten the gist of things.

I plan to get a RS125 next month (probably brand-new) and pass the Honda XR200 I'm currently riding to my girlfriend. It's been my dream bike for years and I'm pretty damn excited about finally getting my own.

Thanks to you guys, I'm also mentally prepared for ownership: must DIY maintenance plenty plenty (I hope I can pick up the knowledge fast enough - easy for me to say: clean power valve, flush carb, but time come I don't even know where to start!), dun expect to smoke SP and KIPS on straights until fully-modded, and find Ah Boon at Ideal.

I've been down to Mah to drool at first-hands and check out second-hands with scratched bodywork and rusted handlebars, and wish there was somewhere else I can get a brand new RS125 from cuz I like to buy from a place I'd be comfortable going back to regularly. I simply cannot stomach a closed-policy workshop, especially after getting used to my scrambler mechanic's educational and communal attitude.

Anyway, I hope to get my sleek ride soon and meet you guys in person. In the meantime, ride safe.

hmmm better think twice bout getting a brand new rs125..

i mean.. as everyone knows... the resale price drops like a brick once the machine is pushed out of the shop...

a brand new machines gonna cost like 8 - 9k which in my opinion is a bit too high..

another things is once ya ride the rs125.. you will have the urge to get the bigger brother.. the rs250.. and if i were given a choice, i would buy a brand new rs250.. it's really more worthwhile.. it's one of the fastest among class 2a, the bike had already stopped in production.. really a cool piece of machine to own..

well.. this is my opinion..

ask any guys here.. throw them a either brand new 125 or 250, which one will they prefer... mayb i'm wrong hahaha

by the way, which shop do you send your scrambler for repair?? closed workshop policy... sounds like the place where most of us send of Prilly for service... both ah boon and ah paul @ ideal have this attitude towards most new customers..

haha

Hi gucci aka briane! this is ronny, who bought your aprilia 2 years ago. remember me? the bike is still good. i just did an overhaul. replaced piston, chain, and many many things. cost me $1,500 plus! the valve... i gave up. Ah Boon set it somehow so that it keeps open all the time so it's still fast. Planning to sell it though. what bike are you riding now?

Hi eyz, thanks for your thoughts! You're so right about the sky-high price of a brand-new RS125, and I was in fact quoted just under $11k (OTR) by a Mah salesman.

I have two main considerations I'm grappling with though:

------------------

1) Since regular and loving maintenance is what makes the difference between a trouble-free Prilla and broken p-valves/piston cease/wiring c*** up, getting a 2nd-hand is quite a gamble, and I won't know how well it's been taken care of until I live with it for a while and see how it behaves.

On the other hand, I got my XR200 used and it's been real good to me, but then again it's a Honda, and it's never been to the trail. I would never be able to tell that with an RS125 cuz you don't have to go off-road to race - the street can be your track, if you live dangerously.

2) 2-strokes are natural petrol guzzlers, and a modded Prilla will drink even more than normal, so I think it would make sense for me to get an RS125 and keep it for years since giving in to the temptation to upgrade up, up and up (one of my parents' neighbours has a RSV1000, full carbon fibre fairing, I see already gian until terok) would mean constantly increasing fuel consumption, which don't make sense lah.

But then, I won't know how hard the Prilla bug will bite me until I own one and become a Prilla slave like Lawrence.

------------------

Care to comment on my thoughts, anyone? I could sure use the help to decide. Money can afford, but money also always, always, always no enough, so if I can find a guaranteed good 2nd-hand, I would jump at it. Pity I missed out on Servo's blue Pepsi beauty.

I take my scrambler to Paul Chong, one of the two partners of the shop Race Incorp (53 Ubi Ave 1, Paya Ubi Industrial Park, #03-29, Tel: 67471664), and a racing and mechanic veteran. He's also a chilled-out guy, and is happy to let you watch what he's doing and explain stuff to you. That's a huge plus for me, not being experienced myself. He often opens damn late too, which is a plus since my work hours are 4.30pm to 12.30am. His shop very conveniently located, can ride straight up to the 3rd floor and park right in front of his shop. Scramblers only though.

Ah Boon and Ah Paul have closed-door policy to most people ah? Aiyah, like that how to learn... must depend on AOC consolidated knowledge, is it? I know there are other places like First Motor that people bring their Prillas too, but Ideal seems to win hands down on customer feedback, at least on this forum.

replica version is definitely not legal to use rs pipe..

ya have to take a look at his pipe..

is it the carbon fibre pipe or the aluminium end can..

currently only only newer RS i think from FT plate onwards are allowed to use the small aluminium end can..

don't be taken for a ride...

basically, the usual maintenance we do ourself are quite minimal.. engine wise, i guess non of us has ever step into it.. brakes, clutch cable, bulbs, engine oil, plug, valves, exhaust and stuffs which are easily fixed w/o the need to seek a mechanic.. we'll do it ourselves.. currently the only person i known of that does his own jetting of carb is fibre.. and he's hmm.. been MIA for like a few days liao.. he's good and i really admire his knowledge..

On the other hand, I got my XR200 used and it's been real good to me, but then again it's a Honda, and it's never been to the trail. I would never be able to tell that with an RS125 cuz you don't have to go off-road to race - the street can be your track, if you live dangerously.

that's exactly what i'm trying to tell ya.. don't jump into buying a new rs before even trying it.. once ya got a new bike.. you have no choice but to commit to it.. not to the bike.. but to the loan for at least the next few years.. it's not difficult to find a decent 2nd hand rs125.. servo's pepsi is now owned by nicky.. and nicky is letting it go.. browse the past few pages to look for him.. if ya really skeptical about the internal parts of a 2nd hand rs.. ya can always bring the bike to ah boon and pay him a fee to check up the bike for ya.. and if any prob is discovered, ya can always find another bike or deduct the fee that is required to repair the bike from the original selling price..

2) 2-strokes are natural petrol guzzlers, and a modded Prilla will drink even more than normal, so I think it would make sense for me to get an RS125 and keep it for years since giving in to the temptation to upgrade up, up and up (one of my parents' neighbours has a RSV1000, full carbon fibre fairing, I see already gian until terok) would mean constantly increasing fuel consumption, which don't make sense lah.

i have not much to comment about this, just that.. not all 2 strokes are heavy drinker.. nicky's bike is one of the few with the best petrol consumption around.. a full tank for a mileage of 300+km.. it's really depends on wat performance ya want from ya bike.. ya can't expect the best of both world.. something gotta sacrifice for better performance..

and for bigger bikes mean bigger fuel consumption.. i suppose so.. but with advancement in automation technology, bigger bikes should have better fuel consumption now as compared to the past ba?

and i'd mentioned before.. as ya visit ah boon more often, he'll be more friendly with ya.. just that he's a bit hostile to new customers.. think quite a few of us had a taste of that.. and there's this incident where ah boon refused to service a fellow's bike.. unless he changed his faulty piston.. ha!

i read with a smile seeing how things have progressed slowly from way back in the beginning. people come, people go. those who remain are really helpful. those who came back, they really missed the ride. for whoever that decides that the rs is the way to go, i salute you for making the informed choice.

however i must make this stand that we are not in anyway biased against any machine on the roads currently. comparisons are made frequently but in no way degrading to other brands. comments here are merely personal and no pun intended.

Thanks for the advice eyz. I really wouldn't mind trying out an RS125 before buying but so far I've only checked out mototiams, which in general aren't happy about test rides o_O The problem with buying from private owners is that they will mostly only accept full cash payment, which I can't afford lah. I actually tracked down Nicky's post on pg 118 and SMSed him, but too late, bike sold liao :faint: I supposed it's inevitable I'd miss it, and I'm actually surprised it wasn't sold earlier. Nevermind, I'll keep my eyes open for any others up for grabs.

About Ah Boon: I guess it's natural that mechanics will be more frenly with you as they see more of you - human nature. I'll just have to remember not to take it personally, hehe. Good mechanics are worth taking the time and energy to develop a relationship with. Your story about him insisting that a guy replace a faulty piston shows that he stands by his principles, which is almost always a good thing.
