Get the 34mm carb from xxes123. $350. Installation at 37 motoring plus tuning would be about $30.

My advice is never to buy parts from shops as you can almost always get it cheaper elsewhere.

Arrow is just better IMO. I dont really fancy Gianelli. NOt sure if the endcans make a diff, but the belly is the same. :)

w0ot. thanks bro. u juz made me feel better abt the arrow pipe im abt to receive. I guess its all really abt the same ah. Read somewhere that they come from the same factory. so mostly its juz psychological i tink. but honestly i do prefer the black colour of the gianelli. oh wells. Oh and thanks for the pricing of the carb. CANT WAIT FOR NEXT PAY!!

Hi any one here tune their own bike? just wanna know what will happen if its tuned too lend? i know too rich will compromise the performance.

and recently the sound of the exhaust seem like coming from to front of the bike instead of the back. I check the exhaust pipe, its seem ok.

basically anyth richer/leaner than perfect tuning compromises performance. But alas, that situation of perfection is akin to achieving nirvana. An overly rich A/F mixture compromises fuel consumption, and can cause excessive carbon build up in ur system.

With regards to tuning, i do possess a very useful tool which i used before for tuning. Its called the gunson colourtune. Its basically a spark plug with a glass mirror on the top, so u can actually see the combustion in ur engine. U tune your carb based on the colour of the flame u see in the engine(yellow flame = rich, blue flame = lean) However the process of tuning is still not as simple as ABC. u still need to fiddle around with the jettings n stuff. This plug however takes away the need/hassle of spark plug reading. Quite a cool tool if u can get ur hands on it. If anyone wants a go at it i can try look for it in my store room and bring it for a DIY session or smth.

I got a qn to ask. I notice that after a cold start, ie in the morning or after leaving the bike off for awhile, after warming up the bike n all, when i ride off, i dun experience any bogging at the 5-6k rpm range. However as the engine gets hotter(after say 10-15mins of riding) the bogging at this rpm range starts. Why is this so? Is it normal?

However as the engine gets hotter(after say 10-15mins of riding) the bogging at this rpm range starts. Why is this so? Is it normal?

Back in '04, I've used the Colortune glass spark plug for initial tests to determine where in the rev range and throttle position was my mixture lean or rich. It is a very useful tool and it's really cool watching it work... haha But it only tells you if your mixture is rich or lean at whatever throttle opening in a static phase, not when our engines are running under load.

Therefore it is a rough gauge at best, as our engines burn differently when under load, ie. especially under acceleration.

Call me old school but I still believe in the plug chop method. I sacrificed about 30 plugs a month for the duration of my fine tuning of my carb.

You will be able to find out more about it on Google.

I think you will have a good grasp on carb tuning and will probably get a well-tuned carb with some experimenting. Can't wait to see how your bike runs and sounds after the new arrrow has been fitted and your carb rejetted! It's been a while since I've met another rider determined to wring the elusive drops of performance out of the 125cc powerplant.

As for bogging from the 5-6k rpm range, the bogging could be due to richness or leanness, from what I've experienced. If your carburetion is currently slightly lean, the higher engine temperature causes the combustion to become leaner, and since insufficient fuel will cause a drop in power, the bogging could be due to a drop in the fuel ratio in the A/F mixture. You can try shifting the needle clip position to richen the mid-throttle range.

2-strokes are meant to be ridden within their powerband, so perhaps after upshifting to 2nd gear, you might wanna try keeping your revs above 7,500rpm, thus circumventing this issue.

Hope to meet up with you some time. I think we'll have loads to discuss. :D

You can try 2 very insightful and interesting books:

1. Twist of the Wrist: The Motorcycle Roadracers Handbook (Vol 1) - Keith Code

2. A Twist of the Wrist 2: The Basics of High-Performance Motorcycle Riding - Keith Code

Then try to apply what you can remember from those books to your track sessions.

Hey i have these too! Stumbled upon a dvd few years back and got the 2nd guidebook last year from my gf brother. Very helpful indeed. I highly recommend these too. :thumb:

Bro lacrimosae : Actually to be honest when i juz got my bike i told myself that all work will be done at a workshop. i wont let my itchy hands meddle with anyth. Bt then someone here posted abt carb tuning and u started giving ur insights, got me reading/googling/youtube-ing abt tuning and it made me rmb the times when i fiddled with my sp. Nth beats the feeling of twisting the throttle and feeling the bike rocket off smoothly and knowing that YOU made it possible.

So im officially gona start DIY-ing when my next service comes up. And gona try installing and tuning the 34mm carb when i get the moolah to buy one(asap i hope) I'll need someone to show me the ropes of the rotax engine, though im guessing it should be somewhat similar to the sp engine. Hope to meet up for a DIY session soon!

im 22 this year. short of 2yrs riding experience by 3weeks at the time i got the bike =/ i know there was sth fishy abt the insurance premium right frm the start coz another bike shop quoted me 800+ for TPFT with the assumption that i had 2 years riding exp. but i still bought the bike coz like i said its the cheapest deal in town.

I have the Dellorto Manual, Dellorto Carb Tuning Manual, and a few more manuals in pdf format I can email to you if you PM me your email address.

You can purchase and read the following books, which definitely helped me over the years. (Listed not in the order of importance)

1. The Essential Guide to Motorcycle Maintenance - Mark Zimmerman

2. Two-Stroke Performance Tuning - A. Graham Bell

3. Two-Stroke Performance Tuning in Theory and Practice - A. Graham Bell

4. Motorcycle Tuning: Two Stroke - John Robinson

5. How to Repair Your Motorcycle - by Charles Everitt

6. Zen & The Art of Motorcycle Maintenance - Robert M. PIRSIG

After you've read the books and got enough hands on experience, it's time to learn to ride your bike well.

Local mechs are usually skeptical that you can learn anything from books, but that's only because they have nothing in their noggins to pen down. Sure, in the end its all words but even if you can try to digest a fraction of it in every sitting and apply it, those are life skills you will pick up slowly but surely.

I'm no engineer but I learnt everything from scratch over the many years of owning a fleet of bikes. I started getting my hands dirty when I was 14, and eventually realised that its mostly common sense and simply problem solving.

thanks for the insight, ill start reading up and trying these out, really hoping to learn how to balance my carb well too.

But should disaster be my fate,

Guide me through to Heaven’s gate

Otw back from changi village, for the first time, i revved the bike more than 6k rpm. and i almost came in my pants. the feel of the pull when the valve opens was orgasmic. i havent gone that fast on a vehicle in a loooooong time and it made me rmb those times on my sp(btw the time my sp scrap and getting this bike was close to a year). and what can i say. IM LOVING IT!!!!
