Not fully syn does not do this, but semi syn does? I dun get the theoru behind it..

The theory says that semi-syn is slightly more grainy, and allows the piston rings and cylinder wall to have more contact. Full syn is too smooth - so they say.

Guys,

Anyone know the reason why during run in after overhaul, it is recommended to use semi syn 2T rather than fully syn 2T?

Where did you hear this theory from? Who told you?

Not trying to be mean..but Ask yourself, is this person an engineer for engines and/or an engineer for lubricants?

I am not a mechanic, I might be wrong. So, please check with others!

Kelvin... You hit the nail on the head..

I've got a friend who was asking me this same question... he wanted to know WHY is it recommended to do it this way.. Chris's answer sounds logical though..

Any ideas from you?

I think it's probably an extrapolation from the quite common recommendation to use mineral oil 4T (not even semi-syn) to run in 4-strokes. However, 4-stroke theory doesn't necessarily translate well to 2-strokes - running in engines hard, for instance. 4-stroke owners don't have to worry about piston seizures. I used ester-based fully-syn 2T to run in my current block and piston.

Regarding the run in hard part.. I believe eyz did that for his bike.. It seems to be working just fine... Eyz posted a link in AF1 long ago regarding hard run in.. Hmm.. Maybe he can be kind enuff to post it here..

Since we are on the topic of run in.. So what is the best way to run in??

For Aprilia RS125, i believe that you should take it easy for the 1st 1000KM... iN the sense that dun whack the bike.. Keep it at 6000-7000 at the most.. Then towards the middle to end of your run in, then playing at higher RPM 8000-9000.. The theory behind this is so that the piston can form a better seal and also be able to take the punishment that you are definitely going to be giveing later on.. Same applies to the bearings..

If I remember right, eyz's link talked only about 4-strokes. I've seen nothing in print or online that clearly and systematically advocates hard running in for 2-strokes - only forum posts and word of mouth. Running in, like oil use, is a religious subject, so I don't see much point in mentioning much than the manual's recommendations. Just go with what your trusted mechanic or reference book tells you. First Motor recommends looong run-ins, even just for new pistons and rings, not blocks. My mech recommended 500km for my new block and piston. How to even begin discussing this without resorting to I say, you say, my glorious great-grandfather say? The only way is to systematically test. Run in, open your block and check. That takes time, money, energy, and crazy commitment.

Pls dun talk abt nick.. I think one of my balls is still stuck in my throat.. lol.. Ever been pillioned and free wheeling at abt 80km/h before down shifting 3 gears at a go and taking a right turn?? I think not..

actually in all honesty, it was not so fast, just that a lack of grab bars made sudden accelerations quite tricky. the worst i ever exprienced was on a 1150GS, with a guy who shifted gear as if he was in some rally or something, and braking so hard as if he wanted to demo ABS for me. then, even with the grab bars, i eventually ended up with sore hands after a 10 minute ride.

there are many reasons why we all prefer to ride our own bikes. to prevent cases like this, i think, would be one of them.

Haha bro.. it's all about griping the tank..

My bro used to pillion me on his K2 SRAD1000.. It was huge sia.. The braking and acceleration was soo superb too.. Then 1 day, my friend was going to pillion me on her kawa Kipps.. 150cc.. as usual, i reached out for the tank..

She turned and looked at me and said,"Wah lau, you think wat?? 1000cc bike ah? Hold my shoulders la!"

wa lao. thanks. i feel so old now.

mah's workshop was busy, and can only open up the engine tomorrow; which is suspect is better than opening it up yesterday, leaving parts to oxidise/corrode, and have the mech forget what he did/where he placed the parts, today.

am expecting the operation to take at least a week. this is gonna suck. i HATE public transport.
