Could be many reasons:

1. Engine side - Dirty air filter, old or wrong spark plugs, FI body need balancing (or dirty, i.e more than 100k mileage liao) or fuel/air mix too lean.

2. Transmission side - Rollers, Belt and clutch/bell.

These are standard servicing/checks that should've done when you buy a 2nd hand bike.

SW got no power bend all the way to top speed.

If bike feels stress, most probably the fuel too lean. Go check the rest of the things then change fuel/air mix as last choice.

guess you'ld have to explain what you mean by stress before we could make some more useful suggestions/comments; "stressed" is a little too vague.

all engines (including new ones) undergo higher stress as they run on higher rpms... tensile/compression stress, strain, sheer forces, temperature, oil pressure, vibration, etc. lots of forces/variables increases when we run the engines harder. do expect the nice refine sound the engine/exhaust at idling or low speed riding to be replaced by some much louder and higher pitched sound when the engine runs at high revs (around 6.6krpm for 120km/h on meter). higher revs causes more "violent" and higher frequency vibrations.

as long as we've done all the necessary servicing to keep the engine/bike at good running condition, should be ok as long as the engine/bike do not exhibit unnatural vibrations or sound :shades:

especially when taking over a used bike, we strongly suggest a full/detailed servicing program to get the ride ship shape... here's some useful readings:

bought an used (aka 2nd hand) silver wing?

400cc parallel twin vs 400 inline 4... sounds diff ....

its ok one la.. unless sounds like engine dropping off..

Many ppl difficult to accept the smooth, soft yet a bit slow nature (depends on wrist power actually) of the bike.

Better ride and get use to the bike for the 1st few months.

Then think about other add-on.

hi guys! if i change to K&N filter, do i need to tune the bike? is goin to dyno a much accurate reading? i'm reaching 30k km soon and i'm planning my full servicing. interested in the K&N filter. anything i can do to enhance my FC? currently i'm clocking 23km/l. 80%/20% highway/city riding.

I changed to K&N filter at 9k km and when SW9000 checked my air-screws recently, everything is in order. I think it depends on the conditions / age / usage of the bike and whether things have run-off from the initial "best" settings.

Hmm. Full service done liao.

Everything ok except moving off got bit of vibration.

Must open up and check/clean again.

dyno is more accurate than "agaration"; but for a SW plus without controller unit (e.g. power commander series), its a waste of $$.

guess if we bring a SW to a dyno centre, they'ld probably think a carrot has arrived

i'm running my SW on K&N, still loving it. better FC is more evident during touring :thumb:

main objective of tweaking the air-screw is to synchronise or level the load on the 2 cylinders (parallel twin engine)... layman means both cylinders should work equally hard. this help reduce unnecessary vibrations and prevent the overworked cylinder/parts from unnecessary wear-n-tear.

then comes the side-dish of manipulating the fuel-air ratio. from my trial n errors, no need to change the mercury (vacuum) level after changing to K&M, unless you want the bike to run richer or leaner.

best mod to improve FC = wrist mod :cheeky:

ic... cos i go quite light on my throttle... at 1st when i got the bike (10k Mileage) it was running smoother compared to nw... when do we need to change a new air filter?

how long have you not change engine oil, oil filter & gear oil?

i change them every 5k or 3+ months (whichever comes first) coz usually feel bike is not so smooth around then. many pp say full syn can go further but i'ld prefer to stick to the easy to remember 5, 10, 15, etc schedule... pay a little more but enjoy the ride more :D

how about spark plugs? dirty spark plugs will affect "smoothness" significantly.

try the iridiums (can easily DIY), difference is more especially after few Ks :thumb:

if on budget, ngk ($12 each) is a much cheaper option compared to denso.

air filter can take out to check, if not dirty >20k also no need to change. but i'm using K&N now, take out for cleaning every 20k then put back, ok liow :p
