Hi guys, need some info from you all regarding touring on the silverwing 400. Isn't there great stress on the belt if you are going constant at 140km/h for 200+km? Need some input from you all as I am considering downgrading to a SW from my ST. I still want to carry on touring so dont want to have any issues when i am on NSHW or in northern thailand. Thank you.

I AM BACK!!!!!

yes, we'ld expect higher stress on the belt at higher rps over long "legs"; applies to all belt driven bikes, not just SW. similarly, the stress is on the chain for chain driven bikes; that's why some tourers use aftermarket products such as scottoiler to prevent excessive wear on the chain/sprockets due to heat/drying. as a ST rider/tourer, you'ld understand how important it is for the shaft assembly to have sufficient shaft oil when on touring.

honda designed the SW as a touring scooter and i guess it has kept that in mind when laying down the specs for the belt. to date, we haven't heard of major issues (locally and overseas) with the stock belt being used for touring, as long as proper maintenance is done; let's not talk about abusive/over use, aftermarket belts, etc. let's hope it doesn't happen at all.

for touring, it's recommended to avoid using a belt that's near its "change cycle" or beyond; manual recommended change in every 24k km or 24 months. for local riding, we know of someone who used a belt past 40k km without snapping it, at his own risk lor... highly not recommended for touring. most of us change the belt as recommended or even earlier as it's relatively affordable at $210~$240. i do my 3-in-1 every 20k, easy to keep track :p

many of us has gone to southern thailand and returned safely on the SW400. and it isn't as if we chiong all the way at 140kph; usual SOA along NSHW is 130kph, higher for overtaking. SOA at Thailand is usually much lower due to road conditions and environment. how far for each leg depends on group's butt power, can be planned.

SW9000 is probably can tell you more as he has owned 3x SW400 and toured the furthest... going MHS at end of the year too.

imo, the SW is kind of a proven scooter as its mechanical design (chassis, engine, transmission, suspension) has been kept since its launch more than 10 years ago; only minor tweaks over the decade. some may say it runs on obsolete technologies, but to me, it's the beauty of simplicity and reliability that appeals :thumb:

ps: i'm not a honda salesman, just a construction worker who loved the comfort and reliability of the SW

halo chiongster... pp asking about SW 400cc lah, not fz 1k

Chairman, he was saying he chionged with the FZ 1k all the way back to SG at 140-150km/h = no problemo.

Indirectly... his SW was superly good with strong wrist power.

hi guys, can check when u guys say changing the rollers. do u mean the rollers

in the variator??(eg. J costa??) read up liao still confused.

Yes, there are 8 rollers inside stock SW.

J-Costa is a different implementation although the basic concept of using centrifugal force to push the variator plates to vary the pulley ratios applies. Take a look at this J-Costa video if you are keen on getting.
