[Technical] Engine Oil - All related matters in EO

Recommended Posts

its a weird size. 23mm can't fit, 24mm on the loose side... so i use a 24mm spanner, but u hv to be very careful. its easy to slip the spanner and round the drain bolt. b4 replacing, check that ur o-ring is not flattened. if it is, change it or else could leak.

1.5L of Eo will cause your gasket to Explode. WHen oil heated up , it will expand hence will damaged your Engine gasket which may also lead to Overhaul of your Engine.

just to play safe, put 1100L of engine Oil will do.. I just had my Oil changed today at Planet motors. I got myself 1L of chex9000 and 100ml of motul300v Oil... not too bad!!!

gasket won't explode lah. Unless Ur crankcase don't have a pressure relief vent (a tube from crank case to airbox.)

Even without crankcase vent. The end result is sluggish engine and at max foaming engine oil (especially when the oil is near it's end of useful life.)

Plus maybe leaking of oil at crank seal.

its $18 at mxtradings. same price as the vtwin 20w50. overseas forums have pretty good comments so far. im using the 20w50 one now. its smooth and good value for a fully synthetic.

@naim: How do you find 50 weight? Wondering if I should change to 40 weight this time or stick to 50 weight

i prefer 50 wt. may be a little more draggy than 40 wt, but i would trade sum acceleration for more protection.

Ok thanks, I know all 50 weights are not created equal and there is a huge range in the viscosity. I wish someone who has tested different oils can give their view. I have only tried Motul 5100 on my phantom and it does feel a bit draggy and the need to overgear it. I am wondering if a good quality 40 weight FS oil(may be pennzoil) can provide the same protection as a 50 weight and at the same time is more revvy.

mechanics recommend to use mineral oil instead of synthetic oil for old engine. as the mineral is thicker and suitable for old engine.

mine has been overhauled recently, so it can happily run synthetic. b4 that, my engine was blowing-by. so wen i run on synthetic, the engine oil was evaporated more quickly than mineral. so ur theory is still somewhat correct. :)

i tink protection wise can only be determine over a few years, and the engine is torn apart to check for the wear & tear. but im sure a good brand FS can hold up to the abuse be it 40 wt or 50 wt. oil analysis can also determine how long the oil stays at the same weight (oil thins out as its being used). i just prefer to be on the safe side wif the higher viscosity. :)

i am riding a 7yrs old phantom, just owned for 2mths

i need some advices, should i use FS oil? like thumper or chex 9000 or motul-300v mentioned above?

or just stick to my current $7 castrol EO? (just changed ~1mth, already hit 1k km)

i hope to get an EO that creates LESS / MINOR vibration, LESS noise, SMOOTH gear shifting within 2k mileage

pls advise... 10Q:)

@naim

thanks for advice, now i am trying chex 9000, compared to previous castrol 10w40 (from LAB), chex 9000 feeling a bit more vibration, draggy & a bit harder to shift, not sure what's the reason... anyway, exhaust sounds nicer (slight louder & deeper bass)

@Ray Oliver Donovan

next time i go Dr Koon there try..

Hi Guys,

May I suggest that your particular engine oil chosen will work best together with MSP Engine Oil Enhancer.

Few years ago, a CityCab taxi had been accidentally driven into the swimming pool at Kentish Lodge in Balestier by 55-year-old Ling Hong Lim during a heavy downpour.*

The vehicle A spokesperson for CityCab said it will remove the taxi after the pool is drained. This is expected to take a day and the company said the taxi will be good enough for the road again, but only after an overhaul.

An "overhaul" would have cost around SGD$10,000 and take at least 3 weeks. However, MSP came to the rescue 28 days later and fix the taxi within a day! Please see below.

Hi Spark, for a reasonable full syn, some people do 4-5K before oil change. Oil degradation is dependent on varying factors such as riding style, traffic environment, quality of engine oil, age of bike and so on. Some gurus advise that you could continue to use your bike as long oil still good and not too dirty, the bike still works and feels alright close to when the oil is new.

Liquimoly 10W50 Fully synthetic (Equipment Extreme) $24

naim - very smooth. very slick gear changes. doesn't get rough at full throttle. vibration is strong due to its thickness, but u can feel that its smooth. though abit expensive. 4.5/5

Original Honda Motor Oil 0W20 Similar to the picture except the words are all Thai.

Icomeforyou - Loved this motor oil, cheap and good. Smooth, and gear is smooth. The oil once changed you can feel its thickness. My vehicle was "growling". Top speed okay, not much improvement, but riding is smooth. Best utilized at 85 - 95 there abouts. Can feel it starting to break down around the 1k~1.5k mark

nbk3 - its a 10w40 which meant its relatively light. doesnt mask vibrations or sounds as well as thicker oils.fully syn. so far so good. on expressways u can sorta makeout the engine churning the oil away.hmmm. so far so good. 3/5

Shell Rimula r3x 15w40 rm71/5L DIY

nbk3 - used for over 8000km and 3 oil changes, it has been delivering decent performance so far, no slippages at all and engages clutches firmly and responsively. not able to mask vibrations well and only starts to truly feel much smoother after ~1000km. definite value for money at ~sgd6/L. overall 3/5
