[Technical] Engine Oil - All related matters in EO

Hey guys,

Anyone else using Belray thumper 15w50?

Seems like its semi-synthetic, does this mean it last shorter compared to other fully synthetic oils? I've heard some good reviews about it, so any extra opinions?

Ive used it before and it was pretty nice.

erm, has anyone used shell eo those from the kiosks before? haven got time to do eo change at my fav place so thinking of just grabbing some eo from the petrol kiosk to do quick change..

They are rather pricey but beats not having a change. You can try esso too.

Hi I wanna ask if Phantom TA200 needs 1.2L of engine oil right? reading on the dip stick should be at the correct level or slightly above the xx markings?

1L. it should be within the XXX markings.

yah for the same price of fully synth around 27sgd i think might as well change 300v elsewhere. somemore shell fully synth only 10w40 i remb so the performance was good but jus didnt felt thick enough for protection..

never thought of esso! only pumped petrol at shell and nvr thought of going else where.. should try..

Hm... regarding engine oils... here's what i have to say...

It's not just about fully synthetic or semi-synthetic although in general, fully synthetic oils have better qualities then semi-synthetic or mineral oils. The processing method used to produce the oils also plays a part in the oil maintaining it's properties.

It's also not just about the viscosity as well. Some situations requires thinner oils, like 5w40, in racing applications or similar. Others may use thicker oils, like 15w50, in old engines or engines with lower clearance tolerances.

It's also not about the brand or cost as these do not necessarily point to a good oil. Other factors like additives or compounds will also affect the qualities of an engine oil.

So, what is a good oil?

To me, a good engine oil is one that is reasonably priced, maintains it's viscosity and lubricating qualities at least till the engine's manufacturer recommended oil change mileage or beyond, keeps the engine in good running order in the long run with minimum damage and able to maintain it's qualities in peak running conditions.

Having tested and noted the results of a few brands, types and viscosity over the years in different motorcycles and different running conditions, have led to a few revelations and conclusions for me.

That being said, ultimately, to each his own. Everyone will have their preferences, expectations and budget.

Ride fast but safe... Skills matters most... the slow ONE... I WAS TOO SLOW at 1min 50.9sec :D

agree.. i think end of the day its just expectations(performance+engine protection+clutch work+etc)+$$+(oil change interval)!

Hi guys, i'm using MOTO4 Roadstar 10W-40 on my phantom ta200. recently it's been leaking EO at the carpark, not in a huge amount though but is this something I should be worrying about?

My engine is recently overhauled and using 1.2l of 10W-40. the dipstick reading is slightly above the xx markings.

Find a way to remove the excess, using a syringe or something. Dont listen to mechs saying add more. Honda specifies 1L. Then u monitor the level.

If there is too much EO, the engine usually pump the excess out through the breather. Possibly causing the leakage u see. If the level in the engine ok but still leaking, bring back to the shop.

A ride a day, keeps the doctor away!

You blew your gaskets putting in too much oil

Anyone can recommend what grade of engine oil should I use?

Not sure if my mechanic is just randomly giving me engine oil.

Riding Phantom TA200 11year recently overhauled.

if overhaul recommend using a thicker eo due to the possible wider tolerance after reboring and/or a new piston like chex 10w50..

if the first few hundred km recommend use mineral oil to aide in the running in of the engine instead of fully synth first..

I wanna add a review for the Cheap cheap EO i bought from Giant Hypermarket.. $8.50 Schnell 4T 15w50.. Firstly i ride a 11 YO phantom, bought 2nd hand last year. Personally i havent tried many EO mentioned by bros here. I can only compare with EO i have used which are added by workshops.. usually at $18.. My bike is considered old and i am guessing the gap in my engine is super wide? so a thick thick EO is suitable for me, might not work for other bros..

After I use this EO my phantom regain its former power as strong as last year when i first got it.. Vibration is reduced on my handle bars as i no longer feel numb after long journey.. pick up speed increase, and i cruise at 100km(phantom speedo) with ease.. engine feels quieter.. altho the exhaust sound more high pitch then the normal deep bass. Any at that price tag.. its freaking awesome :)

I have a question - how you dispose the used EO?

I changed to this lousy eo from one of the workshop in ubi.. which almost all of it evaporated and I just top it up abt 700ml of this giant eo as I was desperate.. will be draining this eo in 500km but havent tot of where to dispose.. probably bring to my workshop and give them at the same time buy my spare spark plug as a gesture of thanks? :)

Phantom very particular about eo. Don't make the the same miatake as me. The lack of eo wore off much of my internal parts in my previous bike.

Shops get paid for the barrel of oil.

For my phantom, i found that 20w50 oils works great but changed often

Checking levels is a MUST

Thanks for the advises bros.. I didnt know all evaporated alrdy as ride felt rough so i decided to check.. surprise to find the eo almost gone. Will do eo check every week and after every long riding journey. . Determined to let my phantom serve me for many years to come

Hello knights.. The Schnell EO worked great for like 300km.. yesterday the whole engine felt rough.. so i checked level in case evaportated again.. but surprisingly the level is still in the 2 X zone.. strange.. so i did a few checks on different time of the day.. so i guess the eo is still worth its price tag :) Anyway i gonna change soon to petronas.. bought at 12.90 ringgit from tesco..

If the petronas also another not so good eo then i will try the motul300v i saw at LAB.. 22 dollars tho :S Anyway knights! hope to see u guys this friday night for the malaysia trip.. :)

There's molybdenum in Motul 300V 15W50. In the manual, it states not to use EO with molybdenum or graphite additives because "they will adversely affect clutch operation". Not true? Or bochup? :p

This is my second review on Motul 7100 20w50. The engine noise at low rev and cruising is quiet but during pickup seemed louder.
