Suspension Suspension (Front)MacPherson strut and coil springSuspension (Rear)Torsion beam and coil spring

I know some of us call it spring rod, torsion rod, torsion beam... I am not sure if we're refering to the same thing. But how can coil spring and torsion beam be working together as the suspending element for the same axle?

the torsion beam they refer is a seperate thing.

So not the torsion beam I am refering to? But why did they use torsion beam in the first place.

The difference in culture sometimes make misunderstandings difficult to spot. There are 6+1 types of suspended elements.

(1) Leaf spring - commonly in Nkw

(2) Coil Spring - widely used in the current day Pkw [VW Golf, BMW E90, Lotus Elise, Audi A3] because of small space requirement and maintenance free.

(3) Torsion bar spring (some call torsion beam) - used in vehicles where space constrains extremely imminent and maintainance free. [Peugeot 206 rear axle, Jaguar E type]

(4) Pneumatic and hydropneumatic springs - Comfort oriented [MB W140, MB R107]

(5) Rubber springs - used mainly for compression stops or damping rubbers found in many cars.

(6) Torsion springs - F1 [undisclosed team; Only allowed to reveal this much here]

(7) Stabilizer - aka anti roll bar [Join to the stabilizer link of vehicle suspensions, found on most performance vehicle that require chassis torsional movement control; can be retrofitted for chassis tuning]

I think it refers to rear suspension "arm" type.. Not independent rear suspension.. Tho this type of suspension is cheap(and usually found in cheaper cars),you can't adjust the toe and camber and it's pretty much fixed.. For independant suspension the camber usually increase when compressed.. You can't add anti-roll bar also tho some silly company still make them and sily ppl still buy them..

That's a rigid rear axle. On coil spring and damper strut.

Camber cannot be adjusted without a camber kit. No tie rods so no toe to talk about for this axle. The camber for independent suspensions changes with ride height. like you said 'compressed'. But antiroll bars can be added for vehicles who initially have it. otherwise stabilizer links will do the job fine. Like you said, some people who have no idea what does the anti-roll bar do rush into it. :faint:

This is why it doesn't work for such suspension.. I see plenty of ppl at the Getz forum posting stuff like " my car handles better after adding the rear anti-roll bar..."..

I gained 15BHP on my supermarket car just by adding Cunningham racing stripes

What the?! That's not an anti roll bar!!! That's some abhorred abomination!!! :faint:

Do they know how do anti roll bar works in the first place?! They use a bracket and some rubber joints to replace the stabilizer link?! :faint: How do they define the torsional movement for the antiroll bar here? And they add the rear anti roll bar. Are they suffering from a lot of understeer?

and How did they attach the antiroll bar to the axle beam? Is that a cable tie?

:faint: :faint: :faint:

Please enlighten me how does this work...

Actually with extensive modification, the anti roll bar can be fitted on the rear axle assembly of the Getz. But again... How economically is that viable. Back to the same old statement. If anybody want a fast car, go buy a fast car. Don't make a slow car look like a fast car and drive like a fast car. If anybody wants a STI, he should buy a STI and not a WRX then spend lots of money to make it into a STI when it obviously will never be STI. If anybody wants an EVO, he should buy an EVO and not make a Lancer look like an EVO for it will never be an EVO. This is when trees by the road side cannot enjoy a solitude lifestyle.

And the car handles better with the anti-roll bar. What is the datum of measurement to become 'better' as my senior always asks. He has a Master Degree from Leeds for automotive engg.

If any driver wants to buy a cheap car and drive fast, he should not modify the car. He should train up on his driving skills and he will be able to drive any junk like a race car, then buy a fast car so he will be truly fast.

With the introduction of the internet, monitor racers flood the streets and workshops. Demanding workshops to do things that are very weird. True blue racers are far and few now.

I am currently on a quest to revive the proper automotive technical knowledge based community in this country. But my efforts alone cannot achieve very much. For a start, I will be doing training sessions for a local polytechnic committed to expand in this aspect.
