What a great day at PG today! Now I know the difference between a V-twin and a in-line 4 600cc. I must admit the 749 is a very user friendly bike. I really got no problem at all riding it. The brakes are good, the suspension is superb, the lean angle is great, the handling is fantastic, the power delivery is not that much compared to the 999, so i could open my throttle more freely without fearing any tire spin. Coool. I never enjoy scrapping my knee pad sliders so much! All thanks to bro Orange ( Alvin, the 749 Dark also), without his boots today, i would'nt be able to enjoy the fun!

just my 2 cents of thoughts

i just switch from r6 to 998 and the differences are:

- vtwins power are much smoother while the inlines are more powerful but comes in only at high rpms

- r6 is very light and agile but the 998 handles better in corners but takes more strength to flick it thru some corners

- vtwins feels a bit heavier and usually enters corners slower but its power is more predictable and so can open throttle earlier when exiting corners

lastly the riders matters most and for bikes definitely dollar for dollar jap bikes would be better than ducati, but if you could spent some $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ a ducati can beat the inlines.

i have seen an angmo on a 916 sps doing low 1.40s during one of the track days and won and 916 is a 8 yrs old bike think abt it! i am sure many of the k6 or r1 has more hp than that bike.

What u need is a pair of lighter wheels. It'll make the bike more flickable.

U can also lighten your flywheel for faster revs.

Anyway, Troy Bayliss just won both races at the last SBK race.

How's that for V-twins vs IL4s ? :cheer:

I where got fast! U can see from the tires that i didn't push the machine much, it still looks pretty new after that hour. I owed it to the stability of the machine. It really handles very well. the suspension and the brakes are damn good. Just my 2-cents worth of advice: " Brake early, so that u can have more time to think and responds to the corners. If u enter every corners without much mistakes, i dun see a problem doing a 2 minute lap! All the cork-ups usually happen when we brake too late, then we panick, and everythings goes wrong. Wrong gear, wrong speed entry, wrong RPM. That's what slows us down in lap timing."

Anyway, it was really nice meeting up with u a track! Really hope to see u again at PG again!!! :cheer:

Actually, both categories have their pros and cons. An in-line 4 exit out from the corners at marvellous speed! One full throttle above 7000rpm will blast u to the next corner, making u having a little time to react in PG(cos the straights are short). But thats also the advantage of having a in-line 4, u go faster on the straight. But when it comes to a corners it all depends on individual skills and guts. U can have to most marvellous machine in the world, but if u dun dare to bend low and go fast, u will still lose out to a malaysian Cup Kia (they are really fast in corners)!!!

The ducati is famous for its stability in corners. So i find it easier taking corners now after riding my previous rigid 600. My ankles and knees caps do not ache that much after the track session on my ducati. But I still miss the kick of the bike pulling me away from every corners with my 600.

CAgiva > One thing about V-twins is its deceptive buildup of speed. Allow me to attempt to explain...

With Inline4s, because of the nature of the engine, we're always powering out at higher RPMs, say 7000rpms, revving it out to the screaming redline. This gives the brain an impression of acceleration.

A V-twin engine on the other hand, doesn't need that much revs. Also, within say 1000rpms, the Duke would have built up more speed than the inline4 machine, so it actually revs slower, thus hiding the impression of the buildup of speed, until you look at the speedo...

To demonstate this, I was pulling out of the last turn behind an R6, on the wrong gear (4th gear I think, should have been on 3rd). Could hear his marvelous engine screaming all the way near redline. But all I needed to do was to roll on the trottle slightly earlier, and we were side by side all the way to turn one. So we actually accelerate at the same rate, just in a different way.

Also, I don't go for speed on the straights. Anyone can push a bike to its top speed on the straights, its in the turns that seperate the boys from the men. My fastest laps do not top out much more than 180km/h, and I find I mess up corners when I loose concentration (Yea, the too fast, brake too late, panick, go in too slow, stand the bike up look wrong way head for gravel thing....)

Btw, whats your laptime? I was having a hard time keeping up with you through the corners. I was doing consistant 2:04-2:07 on the 2nd session cos I was tired and can't concentrate. 1st session was much better, did consistant 2:02-2:03s.

This might be my last PG outing on the Duke though, cos I don't wanna put too much mileage on it.

thank you gentlemen for sharing...

just wana hear from the twin owners rather than always reading pro riders writing reviews/shootout on bike mag...sometimes i suspect they are obligated to write goodies...

neo, having said that, why are you selling your bike? onto something new...or for personal reasons, its alrite not to share, am just curious otherwise...

you don't stop riding when you become old...you become old when you stop riding...

I agree that V-twins are "deceptively" fast due to the it's power delivery. 2 big cylinders vs 4 smaller cylinders. Gives u more bang for your buck.

Then again, I never brought my bike to PG b4 so dun really know much abt track performance.

Enjoy the 2 different rides and ride safely guys!

Most impt thing is to be able to come back safely in one piece and trash talking abt track performance during kopi.

So when kopi outing ah?

Given a different situation, I'd not sell it so soon. But i'm selling it for personal reasons, and the Sunday's track session just reminded me why I love the bike so much.

Whats next for me? Well, I think I'd stay away from sportbikes for now, but I'd sure like to own a Duke again, perhaps a Supersport? Something less fanatic than the Superbikes.

My lap time was consisitance for the first 8 laps before i enter the Pit. it was about 2min flat, i manage to squeeze out a 1min 58secs on lap 7. But after my pit stop, i was riding slower on an average on 2 min 8 secs. Just trying to practice certain corners and realising my mistakes in the lines. Since it was my first day on this machine at PG, i didn't dare to push that much. Maybe i will visit there more to get used to bike, cos i keep having the wrong gears in the corners! and the RPM over rev quite many times!

Maybe it is due to my engine capacity being smaller than yours and weight of the bike. I am not that afraid the rear wheels will spin out cos the power dilivery is smoother and it is not as powerful as yours! (yours is a 999 leh). so i tend to open throttle a little earlier. And since the bike is lighter, obviously it turns in easier!

 But the situation will turn around for the both of us if we were to ride together in Sepang. Ur machine will be more ideal.
