Seems like so far in Singapore there's no stalls being recommended for selling nice popiahs.

Those with e steam skins.

Though i know of a shop which sell very very very nice popiah skins for home made popiahs.

coz the best popiahs are made at HOME~!~!~! fun, messy and super yummy..... :lovestruck:

YOu put a list like that not fun any more. Describe lah.

Last visit on my yummy quest.

You all must know the Hong Kong Ji Cusine at Alexandra village rite? Famous for its "San Lau", fish slice soup bee hoon and many others. Good food come a good price (slightly ex$).

San Lau is quite standard at $6.00 per pax, fish bee hoon st $5.00. The rest of the recommended stuff are Prawn Paste Fried Chicken, Sweet sour pork chop, steam fish head etc...

Hong Kong Ji Cusine. Apparently I wanted to point out is that there is another 3 similar resturant also call Hong Kong Ji Resturant. One at Bt Timah, the other two I forgot liao.

Well, my opinion, the original Alexandra is the BEST! Tried the Bt timah branch, abit not up to the standard. Order the same dish, One "San Lau", one fish beehoon and one fried rice.

The taste of fish soup beehoon is similar, obviously copied from Alexandra but two things i notice which minus marks! Beehoon over cooked and lost the texture. The Fish was fresh lah but hor the slice is much thinner than the Alexandra one.

The San Lau was also the same good taste like the Alexandra. ANother 2 things that minus points, the fish slice is much thinner and the sliver needle (bean sprouts) not enought portion with Hor Fun and Fish.

Fried rice, nothing to shout about. Nicely done and fragrance rice.

In all, merely a copied version of Alexandra Hong Kong Ji and lower in standard in terms of quality and quantity.

As we sat at the Bt Timah Hong Kong Ji, beside was this Boon Tong Ji Chicken Rice. Eaten that before but then hor... how come there is SO MANY people eating at the place!!! The resturant was PACKED! and still many are will to wait. The sight makes me wanna try their chicken rice again.

I notice that Boon Tong Ji at Bt Timah Branch serving the rice in a pyramid shape and they got better and clean table top (a red paper) for every new customer. Looks appealing duno if they improve on the service and food taste.

Anyone eaten Tao's Resturant?

Taste is good (alot of MSG ARH!!!). We only realise it the day after. YOu become so thirsty and dry in the mouth and left over taste of MSG. The same taste like the you eat 2 package of instant noodle.

30+ per person. No that filling but taste and ambience/service is quite ok given that how fussy my friends can get.

Next time u can try the prawn mee at e 2nd floor too.

Its e 3rd store in e 1st row overlooking e road, on r right side of e main staircase in e middle of e building.

Try e thickly brewed soup n u will feel like u can drink it as water for e rest of ur life.

There's also e famous chilli noodles which may look hot but its actually a very nice combination of sweet chilli.

Similarly behind that 1st row on e right side of e main staircase, e 1st store on ur right sell very very nice sun kuey, peng kuey, jiu cai kuey.

The skin n ingredients inside of these kuey r just in a perfect heavenly combination.

The skin r of just e right thickness n softness, while not looking too translucent or white.

Through e translucent skin, u r able to c e fully packed ingredients inside.

The ingredients r in just e right amt, where one bite n u can see e thinly n evenly slice vegs competing to push each other out.

Dip it in e sweet sauce n chili n nothing can beat these tantalising kueys as e prefect tea break or breakfast.

My first attempt at a field report.

Thats hard. Gentoro does e perfect report.

Anyway y i m so familar is cos i been there every weekend w/o fail for 2 yrs.

Anyway any GOOD n CHEAPSKATE place to bring my gf for her bday tmr?

Thinking of roti prata at e air conditioned Prata Place in btw sle at upper thompson road there n mandai road.

Such a cheapskate choice is cos i m totally broke n its been a really long time since e both of us ate pratas.

If lucky i may be able to pull it off as a novetic choice. Hahas!

Gave up on expensive restaurant where e servings although delicious r usually insufficient to satisfy my enormous appetite.

Sick of buffet too cos will like to enjoy e food rathing than gorging on it n suffering e aftermath sitting down not being able to do anything.

It was a mistake to go to Kushinbo on big ocassions like vday.

You have Flatter me, gekokujyou.

The last field report was done hastily, bz day. Anyway, KL85 just PM regarding the info of this Orchard Hotel buffet. I reply everything I could. Let hope that he have an enjoyable dinner and contribute field report here after the buffet soon. Whether it good or bad, its up to you to try.

In Singapore, there is plenty of good food around, it really depend on whether you are patient and lucky enough to try one of them.

My next case is the famous Teh Tarik near Chinatown Square. I was shopping around that area and I come across this stall, stand alone stall with many chairs and tables with many ppl drink tea and coffee.

Kinda of thirty after the shopping around. I decided to buy a cup of ICE Teh Tarik. I think it about $1.50-$1.80 per cup or cheaper. Cant remember liao.

But when drink the ICE Teh, I realise that the stall I bought from was feature in some makan programme before as the location seem so familar. I remember the show was with Adrian Pang and some locals enjoying this Ice Teh with Nonya Dessert.

I wasn't alone enjoy of this NICE and THICK ICE TEH, there are many bikers, blue collars and youngsters sitting around the stall enjoying the TEH and Coffee.

This is how I stumper upon this nicest teh tarik. Not only it sell teh terik, it also sells many kinds of other drinks like dinosaur Milo etc...

I remember seeing many of our malays bikers at the stall. Please provide the exact location and name of stall. I forgot liao. But i remember correctly it was inbetween Chinatown Sq Central and Far East Sq facing Cross STreet Here

Enjoy the nice ice cool teh in the hot afternoon!!!

the chilli mee is over-hyped lah...seriously nothing fantastic...

the ingredients are real cheap...tau pok..egg...lean pork...

i have to agree the soup is good though...

next time try the japanese food stall on the 1st floor. (the floor below is actually the basement).

the stall is called mansaku. their oyako don & teriyaki don is better than sakae sushi's in my opinion...

the western food stall Red Pepper Island serves very good hot plate. their chicken cutlet is very generous. the size of the chicken is nearly as big as your face.

the chai peng stall on basement level...wide variety of food...reasonable price. Stall is called Bao Ma

There is a stall, also on basement level..that sells all the fried noodles & rice. their mee goreng is also quite good...called Golden Mile i think. Be prepared to wait though...quite popular, & the uncle has a tendency to fry all the same orders at the same time, ie if you order char kuay teow & he is frying it next...you will get your meal earlier than the fella who ordered friend rice but ordered 10 minutes earlier than you.

the chicken rice stall near the main staircase leading down to the basement is also good. thats what my girlfriend claims.

how i know? cos i was there everyday for 1 year...

anyone here loves snacking on curry puffs too...??

usually i'll get mine from Polar or Old Chang Kee, Polar's puffs has nice shortcrust pastry skin and isn't too oily (think it was baked)... but the filling abit stingy~ felt as though i'm munching on an air puff after a while......... Old Chang Kee's are whoomp full of filling, and the fried skin can be quite addictive... but after a while, the oiliness gets to u... and feel a little jelak~~

but i oso like those curry puffs from those malay stalls, coz they have sardine & onion filling~ that's shiok...!!! :thumb:

I like curry puff but not really an expert in curry puff. If we were to talk about pastry stuff like Chicken Filluete, puffs, crispy puff.. I do have some experienced.

A1 curry puff, nice and crispy. The outer skin get to drop all around if you not careful. My sister bought me a box of A1 curry puff. I could only take 2 at the most. Too much feel kinda of like boring. Filling is great and Of course best to eat it hot.

Basic Prinicple of eating pastry:

Eat the skin plain and simple

Not too oily

Hot

Fresh

Now A1 curry puff is not good in business in terms of many other shop copying their ideas of layers crispy skin.

It seem like Old CHang Kee got their patent in their food stuffs.

Anyway, Pastry...

Spicy: A1 curry puff (I like to call it crispy Curry Puff) and Old Chang Kee's traditional curry

Salty and plain: Delifrance's Chicken filluetes

Sweet and fragrance: An old chinese traditional Bakery along balestier road towards newton after a Shop Name Strauss. Wonderful Tau Sa Pian

to be continue...

The new recommendation is "Ju Tzar Tang (JTT)", Pork Assortment Soup (non-halal).

I have tried plenty kinds of JTT but then all the good ones seem to have one thing in common. Either the soup is great and pork parts is fresh or many variety with large portion of soup.

Take this for eg.

Old ABC (now renovation) got a JTT, Beri Nice! but too strong for some ppl cos the smell of pig is beri strong but I like it cos it make the soup taste even better.

The second level building in outram, big quantity for just $3.50. Soup is good too.

BUT!! The main star is here!!

Morning Store in serangoon garden. Open from 5am till 1-2pm. Why closed so early??? Best quality of soup and pork parts and very fast sell finish one... The Q was crazy!! Chomp chomp open at night but this store took the limelight in the morning and early afternoon.

The main difference in all the JTT is the sweetness. I have never taste such a sweet JTT. My friend who recommended me there told me that the soup taste best only from 11am till closed shop. The quality of the soup and Pork parts is the best I ever tasted!!! Sweet!! The things about this soup is that they have enough salt vege inside which make it sour but less salty instead very sweet!!! Minimal Herb is inside too to enhance the fragrance but not dampen the sour and sweetness.

THe best complete lunch will be a bowl of rice, a $3 dollar JTT ($5 for big eater, you may not want to rejoin the Q) and an assortment of braised egg, tougua, intestines and fatty meats from another store by the corner near the toilet which also need to Q :sian:

The all the Q-ings were made worthwhile when foods is serve with ching chao drinks for cooling the hot afternoon!!
