Notice the full red lane marking when you drive along Orchard Road? It indicates a full day bus lane -- a recent addition on our roads. You can find the full day bus lane along the stretch of Orchard Road from Paterson Road to Dhoby Ghaut.

With a large number of buses plying the bustling shopping heart all day long, the full day bus lane is expected to improve their journey times significantly.

The full day bus lane can also help to reduce the delays to buses caused by jaywalkers and vehicles stopping for passengers to board or alight.

Unlike the normal bus lane, which is operational only during peak hours, the full day bus lane is in operation from 7.30am to 8.00pm, Mondays to Saturdays, excluding public holidays.

Motorists should keep clear of the full-day bus lane during its operational hours. Offenders will face a fine of $130.

The Land Transport Authority had introduced the full day bus lane along Orchard Road as a pilot scheme. The trial, which lasts for six months, started in 3 October 2005.

The trial results have shown that the bus speeds were improved by 15% from an average of 13 km/hr to 15 km/hr. Due to the positive results, Land Transport Authority is implementing full day bus lanes permanently along Orchard Road.

Land Transport Authority will look into introducing full day bus lanes at other busy locations in the near future.
