Hi,

I am a n00b (to this forum, not to riding). I moved to Singapore sometime back, and got my 2B license a week ago, even though I have been riding open-class motorcycles in my home country since almost a decade. Rules are rules, so start with 2B, I must.

I'd like to go for a supermotard, primarily because of the riding posture, among various other reasons. I plan to use it daily - commute to work etc. And after a year this would be sold to make room for a 2A bike (which again would be sold once I have my class 2 license). Here's what I'm looking at:

- Used (no point getting a new one if I'm selling it after a year)

- Reliable (breakdowns on the highways are such a pain)

- Service available easily

I've seen some KTMs and Huskies in the forum, but some friends told me that they are high maintenance and old. It's not the servicing charges I'm bothered about, but the fact that I'd have to run to workshops every now and then. I'd rather spend time riding it, than taking it to the garage/workshop.

All you biking veterans out there must be having some piece of advice for me. I could really use some right now. If you think I shouldn't go for a supermotard, do let me know what would be best for me. And no, I am not even considering Honda Phantom! :p

your choices are pretty limited for 2B fro motards..

buying scramblers like WR200, KTM200 and convert them to motard trim seems too highly priced for usage for just 1 year..

with 2A, your choices are opened..

majority 2A riders rode DRZ400.. but there's WR250, KTM400, XR400..

for 2B motards, you gonna really scout around for them..

they are hard to come by and expensive..

most 2B motard rider i knew rode Husky 125SM..

since you dun wanna new bike, the newly introduced Derbi 125Sm is outta qns..

would it be more afforable in a long run if you just buy a Honda Phantom and ride for 1 year??

where are you from?

Hi biting_point,

Indeed I'm searching high and low for a decent 2B supermotard, but haven't had any luck so far.

Maybe I'll settle for a Kawa KR125/Aprilia 125 for now, and get a DRZ a year later. Unless some nice SM turns up in the next couple of days.

BTW are there are any showrooms that specialize in used SMs/dirt bikes?

Honda Phantom, no-no. No offense to existing owners though. Just not my kinda bike.

I was born in India, but have moved around a bit.

Cheers!

P.S. - Your bike looks awesome!

Hi Anslem,

Thanks for the tip. Derbi 125SM is indeed a great bike. Looks good, performs well.

But paying $10K+ for a new one, and then selling it after a year for less than half the price might not be the brightest of ideas, as biting_point had already pointed out.

However, if someone's selling (doubt it though), please do let me know.

Cheers!
