The email I sent LTA:

Hi

I understand that there are currently standards in place to make sure that

commercial, mixed use & hotel developments have car park standards in place and

privide the minimum as required by LTA. Please correct me if I'm wrong. I would

like to understand more about this. Where can I find official information about

this?

With regards to the standards, it is of deep concern that many new commercial,

mixed use & hotel developments are not providing proper parking for

motorcycles. It is also alarming that some of these developments do not allow

entry of motorcycles into their premises forcing motorcyclists to look for

alternative parking.

Why is there no enforcement (if this is required) for LTA to ensure that

motorcyclists also have enough parking lots in commercial, mixed use & hotel

developments or are motorcyclists completely ignored?

The reply I received from LTA:

We refer to your email of 26-Nov-2009. The present rules require developments to provide sufficient parking spaces to serve their own needs. There are minimum car parking requirements for commercial, mixed use and hotel developments. For motor-cycle parking, it is for the developer/owner of the building to decide on the number of parking spaces to provide. There is no specific requirement for motor-cycle parking provision. LTA has been encouraging developers/building owners to provide motor-cycle parking spaces within their buildings.

bull sh1t! i spoke to westmall's management (when they started the ban on bikes) and they said its becos LTA wants to impose a fixed number of bike lots in westmall's carpark. hence, they didnt want a situation whereby they'd charge bikes per entry. their reason for not doing so is that if 10 out of 10 bike lots are taken, and the 11th bike getting stuck at the entrance.

now LTA says its up to the developers ah? somebody's been bullcrapping here...

yup that's right.. put yourself in their shoe, y allow bikes in when they dont earn much if any at all? waste their space.. but i appreciate that quite a few shopping centres etc allows bikes to go in and park for free. some odd & small spaces whereby a car cannot park. i would patronise such shopping centres.

I think you should write another email to Daisy Low to ask her why is there a discrimination against motorcycle owners as compared to car owners since we motorcyclists also pay for those mandatory charges such as road tax, COEs and insurance.

Providing everything in equality, since the LTA can enforce a minimum car parking requirement for commercial, mixed use and hotel developments, then why not the same or at least some allocation for motorcycle parking?

For me, I don't buy the reason in their reply to you. Bloody government, always favoring only the rich. Come voting day, I'll never vote for them again.

Not going to send them any mail anymore after this, I decided to send them a mail after I finally cracked at Paragon Medical Centre where I needed to use the services of one of the numerous medical clinics there. There was no parking for motorcyclists who are customers and I was not allowed to enter the area. Luckily it was not raining. Motorcyclists actually need sheltered parking more than drivers.

Prior to this incident, I was riding while my friends were driving to catch a movie (2012) at The Cathay. I was following them. Again I was refused to be allowed into the building to park. Met them later for dinner as I had to head down back to Plaza Sing to park.

It is just irritating and inconvenient to to ride around looking for a parking lot (the same fate as drivers who can't find lots) at these premises which do not offer parking for bikes. I could very well illegally park on the pavement for convenience sake just like everyone else but for now, I won't do it yet unless seriously everyone starts to disallow bikes. Orchard road is seriously becoming such a place.

Singaporeans should change their perpective on motorcycles being a 2nd class citizen road users. Most bigger bikes insurance cost more than most cars, maintenance and accesories comparable than cars. Even monthly installment is only slightly lower than cars although cars installments are drag longer(i'm a driver and rider too). Why not suggest these organization to ban cars which cost less than 50k (most korean, china, off-peak cars, etc.....) and see how drivers retaliate....

Can someone make a sticky post showing where the no charge parking lots are? Also could include a list of parking lots that are not motorcycle friendly. Seems to me that if the businesses want our money that they would make it accessible for us and the ones that don't make it accessible don't want our money. I have stopped giving it to businesses that don't want me as a customer.

This topic been discussed in various forms every now and then.

I guess we need to realise the fact that unless bikers are prepared to pay for the parking lots with equivalent costs to that of a car (1 car lot =3 or 4 bikes), else its makes no sense for the building/carpark owner to provide bike parking.

Commercial buildings are there to make money, carparks included.

If u own the carpark, would you rather have the space to generate $$$ than leave it for bikes, who pay like $1 or $2 per entry?

Vivocity:

Bike lots are there. But be prepared to pay. But when bikers realised the cost, we complained also.

I rather pay than having no bike lots at all.

I got to agree that it is a very pissed off feeling when you reached a carpark, only to find out last minute there is no bike parking, and behind you is a line of cars waiting to go into the carpark.

for poth holes, call them direct better, for more precise location, give them the lampost number as well

my experience for previous 3 occassions is they mend it within 24hours.

they recevice tons of emails everyday, but calls they can immediately schedule the maintenance contractor to take action

please do it fast as poth holes are a big hazard for bikers

Just a few comments:

1) With reference to the parking lots - I don't think it is with LTA. it should actually be under the BCA (Buildling and Construction Authority)

2) If the car park charges us the same rate as a car - does it mean that we should also take up one car park space? example - ngee ann city. I wonder if anyone has tried parking and taking up one lot - since that is the charge.

If I was a building owner I wouldn't put motorcycle lots either, and definitely not for free. No doubt some bikes are more expensive than cars and many riders are very rich. But the parking fees that can be charged per unit space are much lower because there are many cheap and free parking spaces around.

And for shopping malls those on bikes probably shop less because no space to put things. I'm sure everyone agrees that they don't buy many things when riding. Those that drive can bring back trolley loads of shopping.
