Hi All bros and Sistas,

I have the intention to buy a laptop but duno how or wat to choose from:confused::confused::confused:.Understand that ppl normally ask "what do u look for and use for??"...Specs...OS...etc.................

Out there are so many to choose from and i just can't figure it out!!!

Maybe bros n sistas can just narrow it down to a Model or Models for all to review here and compare.

Appreciate contructive remarks that maybe help others too.

Thankyou in advance.

Cheers.

All the netbooks are about $600.

I used a one of these netbooks on my recent trip, it's quite useless. It's only capability is surfing the net. I tried to download some pics from my digital camera to the netbook, it took one hell of a long time. You can forget about photo editing.

I will rather carry my notebook, it's heavier and cost slightly more, but at least I have a full feature computer in hand.

Tried my friend's netbook once and made up my mind to purchase a full pledge notebook. It is only good for surfing, email and chatting. Not a very good mulitask machine.

Yups netbook not enough fire power if you intend to use one as a multi-type computer.

Anyway it depends on how you use and take care of the netbook anyway. My Netbook can play 720p MKV file without any lagging, have not tried 1080p though. Intel Atom 280 processor. Use it for portability and light surfing when I am on the move due to its weight.

Will stick to notebook if need to do more CPU intensive stuff.

Netbook is used to surf net.

If it is built to play media it will be called a Mediabook.

That said, to use Netbook efficiently:

1. Ditch the Windows OS. Use a linux on it

2. If it uses a conventional mechanical HDD, swap to SSD.

3. If it comes with a DVD/CD/BD Rom, don't get it.

4. It should come with HSDPA, and a slot for simcard.

I always recommend Dell for those who don't know about laptops much.

Dun need Ahlianwear. If got money get XPS, if got medium size budget get Latitude, or Vostro.

Dell also has Netbook, the Dell Mini. If you not flying businessman, dun need.

For Dell, PC show or not same price one.

Same for MAC.

PC show go there see got pretty girl or not can already.

dun buy any latest gadgets at any pc shows.

unless u know it is way below normal price.

tat means they r getting rid of old stocks replacement storage space for new shipments.

reasons r:

at any shows, their costs of rentals, hiring temp staffs r very high.

these costs r normal added to ur purchases.

a week or a month after the shows,

do check up the items of ur intended purchase.

it will drop 10~20 percent lower.

Set a budget for it (say $2.5k) then choose from there. There's loads of models with millions of configurations (eg Intel Vs AMD CPU, Intel vs ATI vs NVidia gfx) + touch and feel + pattern pretty or not + got freebie or not.

I would not say it is easy to choose a laptop. Always do homework and never ask the shop people to recommend.

That's pretty much, and also maybe a bit of music listening with a lightweight player.

Play Facebook games ok. Some heavy ones like Rollercoaster Kingdom may be a bit tough.

and coz my wife is a teacher, she can get some form of further IT rebate

you could try to see if you have any siblings or cousins or neices or nephews who are still in school and use their student cards to get a deal on this

they are not that uptight about who uses it coz a sale is still $$$ generated for them

and you get it cheaper i.e. win-win

i'd been very resistant to Mac coz when i first tried using it yonks back it was VERY different from the regular windows interface and general use, BTW i first used PC's when it was running Dos 1.0 on a 5.25" floppy with out HDD!!!

but after this macbook. i don't think i'd ever use a PC for myself anymore (other than work issued pc / laptops)

Grounded... :/

It's under Apple Store for Education. Student and Education workers get rebates (quite substantial, bout $300 avg, considering the $2.3k you pay). Only things is the auditing (they probably come check on you, how often will that occur) so better use student / educational worker's name to buy. And only online purchase. 1 day delivery (sis asked me about it on Sun, delivered by Tuesday)

Do purchase apple care (3 yr warranty) as well. Mac repairs are nightmares without warranty. (was quoted $1.2k for 15" LCD replacement by authorised 3rd party, without warranty)

Not a Mac user, used Mac b4, if you do not need to run software much it shouldn't cause too many problems (surf net, bit of word processing, watch movies (very good resolution and screen for HD movies), listen music, light gaming). even if u need to use quite a bit of software (especially those built only for Windows platform and not for Mac), there's either Bootcamp or Wine.

Just another thing to consider.

The only downside is the higher cost of a Mac vs Laptop. $$$ makes a lot of diff to some.

righto, the education plan, sorry i didn't mention it earlier

it is that little more ex than a regular PC based machine

but the longetivy of the machine & software should offset the $$$ in a few years

a buddy of mine bought a VAIO 10 years ago and at that time he was called many names for buying something so "high end" (then) but till today he's happily using it running windows 98 :p

Netbooks are pretty good for running old games. I used to have a Asus 1000H.

You just have to tolerate the cramped dimensions and sit really close to the screen. You -can- do photo editing on it for fun. Or minor touchups to pictures.

Small pictures of course :)

I ditched the netbook in the end for a Nokia smartphone, which is far superior as a mobile note taking device and it can post stuff on forums too! Without a 1.5kg deadweight.

I might get a really really cheap netbook if it were priced at $3-400 to put in my bike for cruises to Changi or Yishun and laze a few hours away typing up local equivalents of great american novels.

But at the present market price of $600-$900 for the worthwhile ones? Rather get a full sized laptop. For $900 I'd rather have a secondhand RXZ to race :p

Posted

Agreed... I bought a 2nd hand HP netbook for $450 for my gf.. still left with 9 months warranty.. If i got 700 to buy a netbook, i rather save or top up to get a betta end laptop.

Bottom line, u get what u pay.
