All i can say is.. when you are overseas and left with limited options, there is only so much that u can do..

The local mechanic there, i believe some of the riders here know him, I shall mention no names. He appears to be a very friendly, helpful and someone you can work quite easily with.

But its business to him afterall, mixing "friendship" and money can be quite difficult to make a good call and what is the best option.

To everyone else who hears about the amount I have to fork out, they will feel I got ripped off big time, but to some, that's perhaps the "expected" amount to pay, given the location and distance from sg. To me then, I had very limited option, and he has my bike in his "hands" while I flew back for medical treatment, I just wanted to get my bike out of his hands and back to singapore, so I dun have much choice to say no to the amount quoted...

Anyway, just a short summary of what happened. I met with a head-on accident with a motor foodcart while leaving Phuket, bike front was gone, both wrist had hairline fracture. The other guy was ok since the impact was on the cart. Went to police station, had a private settlement with the other party. By the way, the thai insurance we bought at customs is CRAP. Covers u S*it, unless u kill that guy.. so be prepared to be ripped by the locals. Fortunately I managed to withdrew cash from creditcard, else u can forget abt leaving with your bike.

I wanted to put the bike on the train to bring back to SG, so got it towed. Halfway I got a msg from friend to try going to Krabi instead since there's a sg mechanic there. Decide to try my luck since I couldnt obtain any available source in Hatyai. Left my bike and friend's bike at the shop while we flew back as I wanted to seek treatment fast.

The mechanic was an expert with BMW bikes, he offered to help service my bike by getting 2nd hand parts from BKK or bring up some parts from Sg. But somehow I wanted to be in charge of my own repairs instead of him making the call, so I wanted the bike back in Sg. Though he said its my call, but I could sense the strong persuasion in him to do things his way, his recommendation. Whenever I insist on doing it my way, I sense new "issues" which make it difficult like claiming the bike is unpushable, difficult to move, not feasible, more costly or he dismantled the front and hard to put back together, etc. Basically trying to tell me there's no better way than his way.

Hearing some rumours about his bad repuation in PML, i was desperate to get the bikes back and out of his hands asap. I insisted on arranging for my own tow from thai border and just wanted him to ensure the bikes cleared customs properly.

The towing fee from Krabi to Border was as much as it was from Phuket to border even though initially he told me i was ripped off by the initial tow. He charged me S$300 for "diagnosing" the damages, dismantling and reassembling back the front, "repairing" my cracked side farring and "storage" for 2 weeks. My bike was back as it was but without my brake disc and meter which he claimed was damaged and clear away. But I remembered they looked fine and usable to me. And the bike he managed to put it back together and was easy to push, unlike his earlier claims.

Im not trying to destruct his reputation, but sharing my encounter. I felt that when you are stuck with limited options and ppl kind of know you are desperate and in that state, everyone's out to rip you. I dun feel he's any different or having any sympathy for a fallen local rider. Whether u think he's reasonable or not, its up to u to judge.

I advise all just be careful when riding beyond the border, anything that happen, you are quite on your own. Even insurance have so much use then. The only thing that can help you then is a very wide network of trustable contacts else money talks then.

Sorry to hear about your terrible experience. Though I haven't gone touring yet, but I do agree that if anything happen to you or the bike in a faraway land, there's really limited options available. Good thing you are well and I think that's the most important thing... :)

The story I heard was that u paid 2000 sing for storage, worksmanship ( dismantleing and fixing back plus tow to sadao. thats too much...really kana rip off!!

from phuket to sadao and krabi to sadao is ~100km so~ 400 sing for towing which includes the vehicle rental 2 way fuel plus driver) is about the same

300 for storage workmanship and fixing is normal ( u stored for 2 weeks not 2 days). plus 400 towing is standard charge in thailand. u are towing 300 plus km not like in singapore a few km only. and fuel in thailand is more ex in malaysia. tow from kl to gp esso is already 500 plus ringgit. u do the maths.

u cannot compare the charges in sing and overseas.

I am not helping that guy but since i know him I just wan to get the true story form both sides.. sorry to hear about your accident.

Thais drive on the left .. most of the time.

=The largest vehicle has the right of way,so Don't Apply Singapore Rules and don't even think about challenging elephants and water buffalos.

=A vehicle following you no closer than 10 cm is not considered to be tailgating.

=If you think you see a swarm of tiny butterflies, think again .. they're flying ants or bugs

=Expect slow vehicles to enter the roadway immediately in front of you, especially if there are oncoming buses.

=If a driver approaching from the opposite direction flashes his headlights it may mean

-police ahead, watch your speed or

-he is coming too fast! or

-he screwed up big time by trying to pass this vehicle so please give him some room by heading for the shoulder ... and even the rice paddy ain't a bad idea.

=Expect buses, especially orange ones, to overtake on curves, hills and as you are approaching from the opposite direction.

=If you see an oncoming bus, expect another bus to overtake it; especially if the road has no shoulders.

=Try not to jam the brakes. Thais road is more friendly and you will tend to kiss them.

=If you are overtaking a vehicle, expect another driver to decide to overtake you at the same time. so LOOK OUT!

=Keep as careful a watch behind as in front of you.

I only sian when its due for valve clearance faster than most people. Mileage is climbing up super fast also. More mileage, more wear n tear, Tyres & brake pads are 1 good example. what u think ? :(
