I should have known it when I tried to ask more details they said "come down to my shop and we'll talk about it"... they didn't want to talk much on the phone, at first I understood it as they have other customers so they can't talk long on phone - never expected they would ask you to come down first then play magic with price.

Btw, what shop did you go to? I also want free drink... LOL

its a classic selling technique called "foot in door".... since you are already at the outlet, might as well leave with the bike you wanted...

personally not a fan of excel... went there a few weeks back to check out their $800 sp and was unimpressed.... but i guess you get what you pay for...

Cheap + fast = no good

Cheap + good = not fast

Good + fast = not cheap

If you are a serious buyer, go down and talk face to face. Not on the phone.

I agree with this guy.

but i do not agree to carrying $7k around in your pocket.... will affect the thinking and decision making.

I had a bad day today, I thought I'd be happy cos I'd have a new bike.

After calling few numbers, I got Global Motor gave the best offer, without freebies but I don't need those freebies anyway. When I called again in morning to confirm the price, this Frankie guy said "just come over and we'll talk". I went to the Autobay @ Kaki Bukit with pocket full of cash almost 7K bucks, arrived there he sat down to do the breakdown of the price, he made a call and told me "sorry, my mistake... wrong price" then quoted me another price 200 dollars more than the first price! I felt like he gave me an interesting price to get me come over first before he opens another price,.. what a waste of time, after walking under a hot sun this afternoon! So pissed off.

Then I went over to Shun Li industrial park, where Excel is, I called David from this shop before and he quoted me price slightly cheaper - yes, it was cheaper, the reason I went to Frankie at Global Motor is because my friend recommended him, I thought a few bucks more expensive is ok as long as reliable, my mistake in judging! Anyway, at Excel, it's not much different. David asked me to go up at his office and start do the breakdown, and said that the price was quoted with COE cap at $800. He explains that the cap means anythign above $800 I have to top up - means for current COE, it's another 400 bucks! WTH ? Didn't I ask for All-in price, including COE? And he never told me about the COE cap before I come. I felt like stupid today, like being lured with interesting price only to be told I have to pay more. And both of them said "No hidden cost like other shops" and I called them to make sure it's ALL-IN price. Really a waste of my time today. When I left, I said to David, "it's wasting time" he even answered me "YOU wasted your time"... WTH...

Lesson for all, don't trust these two shops - EXCEL and GLOBAL MOTOR !

I came home with pocket still full of cash but head so hot, so pissed off.

why walk around with 7k in the first place? you think cash is king and can negotiate better? you don't have cheque, credit card, nets thingy?

kaki bukit should be global motorsport.

i dont see any problem with frankie since he apologize to you to say he misquote.

to err is human...

as for excel...they are just protecting themselves.

maybe u need to learn more about coe.

new bikes profit aint that good to cover the crazy coe inflation.

http://theonlinecitizen.com/2010/03/retune-coe-quota/

you are just carrying $7000 to buy a bike...

imagine those with $1mil trying to buy a lambo...they also have to go down to showroom to enquire...

perhaps the difference is they have a ferrari to drive them there while you are riding your bmx under the hot sun.

this thread is rubbish...

erm.. dude, the fact that I do research shows that I'm not lazy, if you refer to walk around from shop to shop as smart.. oh well, maybe just not my type.

7K might not be a lot to you, good on ya, but I value it, it's not little to me. It might not be enough to downpay certain bikes.. true.. but not for the bike I'm going to buy. I'm not big guy with big bike, you wanna make fun on that part, go on... I have my own life.

I didn't say so, what makes you think that way?

The fact that I carried cash, is because Excel didn't accept credit card and Nets has limit of 3K per day. The reason I stated that in my thread is to show that I'm serious to buy, not just go around wasting people's time and talking big about buying bike. I didn't see it as cash is king or can negotiate better - I see it as you keep your words, I pay. Simple as that.

To err is human, that's an excuse in the situation where I clearly asked to confirm the price before I came down. And I'm not talking abotu days where price might have change, this is only 3 hours difference between my call and my visit.

The problem with Excel, he should have told me about COE cap when I ask about including COE. They have right to protect themselves, but they can do with safe quote, not with dirty trick to lure customer first.

If this is a rubbish thread, why botter commenting? Save your time!

btw, If I have 1 mil for Lambo, I'll give you 7K, I promise !!!

frankie? eh... riding 1000 k7 gsxr?

Not sure what he rides.

to be honest, I don't want to discredit the person, I'm just disappointed with the business. His overall price is actually still low, perhaps considering no freebies etc - my point is if he quoted that price from beginning I would still take it from him, cos my friend has good experience with him and recommended me to visit him. It just wasn't my day and money is sensitive issue for me. Face the fact, I'm not rich.

Dude, before anything, cool down take a step back and relook at the events.

From your story, i can tell that you have little experience in buying bikes or vehicles for that matter.

Dont get me wrong, i am not chiding you, I understand your frustration.

The problem here is becos of the fact that very few people are like you.

Ask for actual price and then deal. A seller will not be willing to discuss the whole deal with you unless you present yourself in person to show that you are truly there to deal. They do not want to waste their breath over the phone.

eg. When i bid for properties, the agent always request me for a check to show "sincerity". Talking over the phone doesnt count becos sad to say, talk is cheap as many people lack integrity.

Unlike buying a second hand bike which comes with COE and is basically sold at "As is" condition unless otherwise stated, buying new bike can be quite confusing with all the regulations and complicated schemes.

Therefore, allocate a couple hundred of dollars here and there for some miscellaneous cost. Dont get all stressed out. Getting a new bike should be exciting and happy occasion.

Dont walk around with $7k cash especially since it means quite a lot to you. Shops wont expect payment in full immediately.

Just downpay to book and balance on collection day.

Good luck in your search

Value this input.. thanks man! You hit a lot of good points there. It's true, I have little experience here, culture shock I guess.

TS, a COE cap is very common in singapore not just for bikes, but also for cars. of course, each shop has a different cap amount. It isn't a trick, its just the way the market works here given the need to bid for a new COE.

In any case, now that you know, be sure to ask when you call so you won't get the wrong expectation.

Finally, lowest purchase price doesn't mean its the best shop to deal with. Exercise Caveat Emptor when buying from any shop in any country.

All the best.

Help the newbie, list the items to ask for in the quoted price:

machine price;

COE;

GST;

admin fee;

transfer fee;

import fee (if not already included in machine price);

road tax;

insurance;

IU unit (include installation? some bikeshop will chop you extra for designer bracket!!! pui!);

etc....

Usually bikeshops that absorb COE are those who parallel import their own bikes, esp popular bikes like S4, kups etc. Becos they already markup on machine price. Smaller bikeshops who dont import lose out on this. But nowadays smaller bikeshops cant survive, its all the importers game now.

Once you got a few quotes(just 2 is not enough to base your willing price), you would already have a rough guide the market price of that bike on the market and decide which shop is more competitive, then you bring out your money and go buy. Be it fixed price or complete breakdown, fact of the matter is how much all-in you willing to pay.
