YZFx >> First of all news reports, do not have definitive answers. They just report on the highlights, in this case all they reported was the damages to the dorm rooms of a university in a sub-district of Chiang Mai. If the earthquake damages were more serious, such as buildings or roads collapses, I am sure that they would have highlighted it.

I am also sure that if the roads are badly affected, you will hear about it on the GT-rdier forum.

Do take into the consideration the size of the entire Northern Region

as well. Chiang Mai is only 1 of the provinces in it.

Put it this way, if you never go, you will never know

Thats precisely my point.

If there are major damages everywhere, the Bangokok Post &/or Straits Times would have reported it.

Think of it this way, whenever Sumatra has an earthquake and we can feel the tremors here in Singapore

Have our roads and buildings ever been affected?

All people do is just head to the ground floor or carpark to feel safe.

Which to me is rather stupid coz if the building collapses, it will fall directly onto

them :cheeky:

Shoei >> U sure weather is bad in CNX? I believe that now is the right season to go.

YZFx >> What he means is that if you are going to Cambodia without your bike, hes willing to travel together coz hes going to backpack there

Suphan Buri (Route 340 , 321)-------Nakhon Pathom (Route 321, 4 )--------

Phetchaburi (Route 4 )----------HuaHin

YZFx>> MHS route condition still ok....vist almost all the northern part n borders. When is ur next trip so that i can assits u on your trip again. FYI...MHS is very hot...we thot is cold over there..hahaa...Too bad we didn't know there is an earthquake in CM bcos we r at Huahin already.

ATwin >> Welcome back. Only MHS hot or all d North as well? If d entire North is hot, then its weird especially together with the 1st ever earthquake in CM. :faint:

You guys manage to join in CM bike week?

Shoei >> If needed, I can get direct weather report from CM :D

YZFx >> Since your plans are already firm, Just go !!! Better for you to try N. Thai with abit of dirt here and there, get the experience then head to Cambodia later. The experience sure helped me in Cambodia. Anyway read my avatar.

SimplyBoChap>> I think overall the northern part is hot...except the mountain part etc, Thung Bua Tong Doi Mae, Doi Inthanon National Park, Doi Mae Salong, Doi Tung Palace. Overall the ride was great, but have to be careful of some road works with mud. One of the vara bike wheel got spin & eventually slowly drop his bike (route 1089 towards Doi Mae Salong). Need 3 pple to lift up the bike...haha..Overall Total distance cover 7538km & Petrol cost ard 10856 Bht & $242 RM

YZFx>> When u going off again...

ATwin >> Thats weird indeed coz while i did experience some warm weather it was only for about 2 days after Xmas last year. May this year was hot everywhere including the mountains as it was the hot and dry season.

As for road works with mud, well we just have to live with it. At least they are regularly repairing and upgrading the roads.

For the 1089 towards Doi Mae Salong are you referring to the section East from Mae Ai and Chiang Mai or the section West from from Mae Chan and Chiang Rai ? Need more info on it coz providing a German couple on RTW with advice via email. Anyway hope the rider is OK. At least you guys were in a group no need to wait for the next passing scooter for assistance like me

Anyway where did you guys go after Hua Hin on the way south before hitting hatyai?

WEATHER / COLD SNAP IN THE NORTH

Chiang Rai declared a disaster area as temperatures plummet

Subin Khuenkaew

Plunging temperatures have prompted local authorities in Chiang Rai to declare the province a disaster area.

They also appealed for relief aid from relevant agencies and the public.

Kittirat Sornsue, chief of the Chiang Rai provincial office of disaster prevention and mitigation, said hundreds of thousands of Chiang Rai residents are in need of blankets and warm clothes.

Up to 150,000 blankets and 800,000 items of warm clothing are needed.

"The Chiang Rai governor has also sought an additional budget in order to help those residents in need of assistance," said Mr Kittirat.

Temperatures in Chiang Rai have dropped and will continue to do so until Jan 20, he said.

Yesterday morning, the temperature was measured at 12.7 degrees Celsius in the town of Chiang Rai and nine degrees at Doi Tung mountain, said Mr Kittirat.

With a low pressure ridge moving down from China, the Meteorological Department has warned residents in the northern region to be prepared for lower temperatures of between 10 and 15 degrees Celsius this week. There will also be a wind chill factor in the region.

Besides the North, the temperature is expected to drop by between one and three degrees Celsius in every region except the South from Dec 18 to 22.

Down south, the northeastern monsoon covering the Gulf of Thailand and the Andaman Sea is still strong, causing between two- and four-metre waves in the Gulf and between two- and three-metre waves in the Andaman. Small boats should not sail in the Gulf of Thailand, the department warned.

I definitely enjoyed it more than Vietnam coz I was on my own bike.

As for the cold weather, well we are in our thick, riding gear, thats why we need it.

But do spare a thought for the mountain villagers living in wooden huts.
