ATwin >> Thats weird indeed coz while i did experience some warm weather it was only for about 2 days after Xmas last year. May this year was hot everywhere including the mountains as it was the hot and dry season.

As for road works with mud, well we just have to live with it. At least they are regularly repairing and upgrading the roads.

For the 1089 towards Doi Mae Salong are you referring to the section East from Mae Ai and Chiang Mai or the section West from from Mae Chan and Chiang Rai ? Need more info on it coz providing a German couple on RTW with advice via email. Anyway hope the rider is OK. At least you guys were in a group no need to wait for the next passing scooter for assistance like me

Anyway where did you guys go after Hua Hin on the way south before hitting hatyai?

SimplyBoChap>> The heavy road works was from CM to Mae Ai towards Doi Mae Salong ( the mountain ride near the KMT village). Road condition still ok ard 5km road works , because i manage to pass thru, slow & careful ride n lucky the road condition not so wet. Just stick at the side of the road where the mud condition not so bad.

YZFx>> If u travel from huahin to CM, maybe u can skip the route 106 from Theon to Li to Lamphun to CM...Quite a tiring ride ( pre-MHS ride with lots of turn & sharp corner plus moutain ride after travelling so far. This route take a longer time to reach CM. If u rushing to reach CM, maybe u can avoid this route. Not much great scenery but with lots of corner & sharp turn. That's why we call pre-MHS ride.

Our Siong ride is from 3 Pagodas pass to CM....spend us ard 13 hr to reach CM. How many days up north for this coming trip. Better bring extra engine oil bcos, u tend to stress the bike bcos of alots of steep slope. Do check ur enging oil at the begining of every ride. Take care n enjoy ur ride.

SimplyBoChap>> I think overall the northern part is hot...except the mountain part etc, Thung Bua Tong Doi Mae, Doi Inthanon National Park, Doi Mae Salong, Doi Tung Palace. Overall the ride was great, but have to be careful of some road works with mud. One of the vara bike wheel got spin & eventually slowly drop his bike (route 1089 towards Doi Mae Salong). Need 3 pple to lift up the bike...haha..Overall Total distance cover 7538km & Petrol cost ard 10856 Bht & $242 RM

YZFx>> When u going off again...

Correction, I dropped my vara on route 1093 towards Ban Huak Border Check Point on the North-eastern side. Its was hell muddy road of about 5km.

Bochap> thks, I ok, I just threw the bike as its was too heavy for me & I couldn't balance even standing.

Just a small advice, pls don pump yr throttle when u see a straight road ahead after all the corners, atwin & myself almost flew away twice when we hit some uneven straight road, even our vara full loaded with 3 boxes got our wheels away from the ground!

Addition to atwin, we only stop for petrol after 280km & 20 mins lunch from sangkhla Buri to CM, still spend 13 hrs.

Atwin>> i am leaving on xmas day for 2 weeks... I will still go on the normal route (106) to cm.. dun think will take the route tak - mae sot - mae sariang... too time consuming... thanx for the info anyway... any other updates on the road? like road work, road close etc....

What ATwin is suggested is go by route 1 to route 11 via Lampang to chiangmai, not route 1 to 106 via LAMPHUN to chiangmai, Lampang & LAMPHUN are different town for info.

I was told by one of the local riders that there are road work near bangkok area, if u r going up from huahin, these roads are very good, as atwin mentioned. 2 to 3 lanes highway, but in the map looks like small roads. And these roads are straight up, no pod holes seen.

CM----------Nakhon Sawan (Route 1)--------Chainat (Route 1 , 340)--------

Suphan Buri (Route 340 , 321)-------Nakhon Pathom (Route 321, 4 )--------

Phetchaburi (Route 4 )----------HuaHin

hi guys, sorry for the long absence. too much stuff at office, and trying to figure out my ride too.

YZF>> really sorry can't make it for your ride on 25th man. really gunning for it. I really hope you have a great trip.

All>> been reading up on the weather in northern thailand. Well it is considered a 'disaster' area primarily because of the low-income thais that will be very badly affected by the unexpected cold weather. it should not affect those who are prepared. a Chiang Mai Mail report even suggests that tourism may increase because of the weather! check it out ChiangMai Mail So I figure if you ride with your regular riding jackets (preferably with cold weather liners), or better yet leathers, it'll be fine. in fact, i think it'll be awesome weather!

thanks to ATwin and TonyHawkzx for sharing the ride info. Really useful stuff! I'm planning my ride on 16 Jan, to take two weeks off. Planning route soon as well. I've been looking at Google Earth for my route, and MAN, some of hte mountain passes in the chiang mai area just look fantastic ... i'm really looking forward to going up.

A quick check with you guys ... from some of the pictures and the info that you've shared that the roads could be a little rough. I'm going up on my harley sportster, got good touring tires on them, but i'm getting a little concerned about the road grip though. if i stick to good roads it should be fine yes?

any guys keen to make it for 16 jan please let me know. so far there are 2 of us, and another 2 might make a good number. I'm on a harely sportster, and my partner is on a honda cbx750. drop me an email at [email protected].

SimplyBoChap>>Sorry for the wrong input...Tony was right, the route was from Wiang Kaen toward Doi Pha Phueng View Point Route 1093 after viewing the video . Beware for the pools of muds, if raining days i think better U turn back.

Tonyvaras>> yup that the siong ride....pump n go..but enjoy the ride there. Your video editing ...:thumb:

daishi>> U riding Harley...sure no problem to MHS. Meet quite a few Harley Guys over there, But a bit siong ride for the Fatboys...Haha...be careful of suuden pod holes. Some of the roads condition was not so good as mention by Tony...just ride slowly . In the end, i sure u will reach your destination. Be prepare lots of sharp corner & turn that u can't find in singapore. Riding safety & enjoy the ride. If u need any help regarding your bike , maybe u can contact our local guy Eric's Thai Hp @ 0869-519126. His Harley work shop is at Phuket.

YZFx>> Maybe u can consider taking this route to CM.....from Huan Hin(route 4)------Phetchaburi (route 4)-----Nakhon Pathom(route 4, 321)------Suphan Buri (route 321, 340)----------Chainat (route 340, 1)------Nakhon Sawan(route 1)

Kamphaeng Phet (route 1)------Tak(route1)-------Thoen(route 1)---------

Lampang(route 1)----------CM.

Feedback from one of the thai harley biker, there was major road work along Ang Thong towards Bangkok. As mention bt Tony, the road was great...2-3 lanes highway...i think newly constructed, traffic was smooth when travelling this route 321 ---340.

Merry Xmas to all

Atwin & Tony >> Thanks 4 d update.

Now that you have described the details. It brings back memories from my trip. I recall that I passed by a KMT village otw down from Phu Chi Fa using the small route with lots of 180 turns. Not the one directly down from Pu Chi Fa, the small white road north of it on the mapbook.

Anyway last Dec most of the stretch from Pu Chi Fa all the way down to 1155

was in the condition in your pix except that I was lucky that it was dry but kena eat lots of dust.

Anyway I think you have misunderstood coz the info not for me. Its for a Geman couple I met.

About the speed Haha no worries about that coz I cruise slowly most of the time to take in the scenery except for boring route 4 and 41 from Hatyai to Hua Hin.

BTW did you guys manage to visit the CM bike week?
