insurance will be cheaper as the insurance company will let you buy 3rd party insurance only.

road tax refer to the chart.

imagine you ride a 1000cc less than 10 years old @ 320sgd roadtax a year

compare to a 1000cc of 16 tears old @ 480sgd roadtax a year

The government really don't encourage people to keep their vehicles beyond 10 years, huh? And paying $480 a year for roadtax is :faint:

Anyways, thanks for the quick response guys!

the increased road tax is only meant to keep old cars off the road and I don't think the government is interested in old bikes or new bikes cos the surcharge for bikes' road tax is minimal compared to cars

It's actually cheaper cos we all know that bikes' depreciation are very high (especially for new bikes) provided maintenance is not a problem for that particular model. COE bikes are mostly very cheap and you do have to fork out some money to make it roadworthy (no leaks, radiator is functioning, brakes, tires, etc - find a good mechanic!) but on the whole, purchase price is much much cheaper. Old models like Rebel 250, Magna 750, GSXR 1100L, etc are very hardy, very cheap. Maybe not the collector's models. But try not to get COE class 2B bikes cos they already are not very powerful and when old, they suffer from the slight power loss rather more drastically.

I own 3 COE bikes myself - maintenance is not a big deal. The road tax is slightly more expensive but pretend that you got a huge discount on your instalment lah. It doesn't matter to me whom I pay to; Govt or finance. Only when I reach a point when I cannot pay anymore, like if I'm retrenched, then I can just scrap the bike and stop paying the road tax. But I can't do it for the new bike, it's going to be much more painful paying off the finance ha ha

Oh by the way, I own a 1988 Magna 750, a Rebel 250, and a Phantom 150. I like the Phantom cos it's a 2-stroke :) sometimes it's more fun to ride. But having the smallest engine does mean it's idle most of the time heh heh insurance is very cheap about 150+ for the smaller 2 bikes, the Magna is slightly more expensive but I can't quite remember how much it is

not just bcos of 3rd party insurance, but b'cos bike's OMV dropped. Insurance caulculate it based on a rather linear depreciation rate. The savings in insurance is pretty significant, and and definitely help you pay off the difference in road tax.

as for whether COE bike are worth it, it depends on which one you are talking abt. if the bike still have plenty of shared spare parts around, definitely worth it for me. If it's a euro bike, with no much parts easily available.. then good luck with ebay.

yeah can't agree with you more ...

tis days buying a brand new bike is really no pray pray stuff ... easily more than 10gran ... n for those who finance it could be an added burden .

keeping a PQP bike is all a matter of regular maintenace and upkeeping . Replacing parts vary from model to model ...., so must do some homework b4 buying one ....

I am currently paying $380, 3rd party for my super4. When it's COE ends and I renewed it, can I expect my insurance for the bike to drop into the low $300+? FYI, I will be 23 yo soon and have never claimed NCD before..

My s4 is fully paid and running fine. FC is also quite good. If the insurance saving can offset the increased roadtax, then I will definitely keep it..

Of all my riding years, all my bike are COE bike. So hmmm i dun feel any pain as far yet. Cos insurance are cheaper.

If its like a bike still under hire purchase, then your insurance is definately higher.

If the bike is under full payment already, then the bike price definately not so cheap as you have to buy it full cash. But road tax mabbe cheaper by abit or insurance you can still get 3rd party.

If its a COE bike well Road tax higher, insurance slightly cheaper, bike price definately or i shall say usually is alot cheaper. Must look for those price to sell.

But as for your case, you have this bike all along, you can just buy the COE and continue riding for 1 year or so to see if you really feel the pain. I dun think it will be that serious la frankly. At the most after 1 year you dun like the payment scheme they you can sell it lor new COE bike fetch better price also.

Wat i like abt if im in your case is that if the bike i like it alot and serve me very well confirm i wont care abt road tax or insurance. Cos i already knw the history of the bike. If getting a new bike then the whole cycle of spotting the defacts will have to start again.

Just my personal point of view.

Heh heh it's very easy

Cos the bike doesn't know its true age and it doesn't know that we expect old things to fail - so it just keeps on running. And dun think about economy when you own a bike (that's during maintenance!) just pay lah

You only think about economy when you are buying a bike - cos what a bike needs it has to get (same as above, it also dunno how to compromise)

One most important detail I almost missed out - get a mechanic who really knows bikes - and make sure your bike is one of them ha ha

And make bladdy sure that you can trust this guy cos he is the one factor how long you can keep your bike (unless you are a very patient part-time mechanic yourself)
