Heh heh it's very easy

Cos the bike doesn't know its true age and it doesn't know that we expect old things to fail - so it just keeps on running. And dun think about economy when you own a bike (that's during maintenance!) just pay lah

You only think about economy when you are buying a bike - cos what a bike needs it has to get (same as above, it also dunno how to compromise)

One most important detail I almost missed out - get a mechanic who really knows bikes - and make sure your bike is one of them ha ha

And make bladdy sure that you can trust this guy cos he is the one factor how long you can keep your bike (unless you are a very patient part-time mechanic yourself)

Errmmm . . . . Thanks I er, . . think you misunderstood what I meant - I understand the part about maintenance - i guess what i meant was about the part when it comes to legislation and COE. I thought they only allow you to renew ONCE?!?!? (That means MAX 20 YEARS RIGHT??)

Yes but the bike have to pass thru inspection over the years. And yes so long as the rider dun kill the bike by getting a 5 year COE, it is renewable for ever. If not why are there still 20 year old Vespa ard? And Honda Magna 1987 is still ard and kicking.

yup... i have a bike registered 1980... she is celebrating her big 3-0 soon. the fact that she is around proves this :p

after age 15... it makes no difference with the road tax anymore

The government really don't encourage people to keep their vehicles beyond 10 years, huh? And paying $480 a year for roadtax is :faint:

u have the option to lay her up...

boring rider. with a boring bike.

too old to want to appear interesting anymore.

Yes motorcycle and private car COE can be renewed ad infinitum with the proviso that you pass the yearly inspections

Under LTA website look for the statutory lifespan - motorcycle and private car do not have a statutory lifespan

Goods vehicles have statutory lifespan 20 years - can renew up to 20 years only

Remember can be renewed more than once especially if the PQP drops to $1 (example) on the 8th year and you renew a $1 PQP it can be done. But the limit is 20 years lah

Taxis and learner vehicles have a statutory lifespan of 7 years only. That means cannot renew lor.

Bernard, you have PM

Wow someone here keeps the RG125 - too bad I get cramps just sitting on it cos I can't get my feet on the foot peg

Heard the Blackbird is a good bike but maintenance is rather expensive and a bit heavy for me to ride after a long tiring day lah

From the 1st sentence, so the COE can be renewed 10 years everytime? I was sure it can be renewed twice and by the time it hits the big 30, it's either export or scrap.

the increased road tax is only meant to keep old cars off the road and I don't think the government is interested in old bikes or new bikes cos the surcharge for bikes' road tax is minimal compared to cars

It's actually cheaper cos we all know that bikes' depreciation are very high (especially for new bikes) provided maintenance is not a problem for that particular model. COE bikes are mostly very cheap and you do have to fork out some money to make it roadworthy (no leaks, radiator is functioning, brakes, tires, etc - find a good mechanic!) but on the whole, purchase price is much much cheaper. Old models like Rebel 250, Magna 750, GSXR 1100L, etc are very hardy, very cheap. Maybe not the collector's models. But try not to get COE class 2B bikes cos they already are not very powerful and when old, they suffer from the slight power loss rather more drastically.

I own 3 COE bikes myself - maintenance is not a big deal. The road tax is slightly more expensive but pretend that you got a huge discount on your instalment lah. It doesn't matter to me whom I pay to; Govt or finance. Only when I reach a point when I cannot pay anymore, like if I'm retrenched, then I can just scrap the bike and stop paying the road tax. But I can't do it for the new bike, it's going to be much more painful paying off the finance ha ha

After reading this and other posts, I'm feel encouraged to chase my dream bike since the owner is still offering. The bike is already 14 years old and as from my reply to the quote above, I thought that COE can be renew twice. So I gave up the idea of buying it until now

That COEs can be renewed ad infinitum (as long as pass all inspection) is GOOD NEWS. Maybe I should really look into getting an RVF... slurp.
