if there is a positive corelation between a bike's age and it's performance then u will want to look at a 'younger' bike. but things dont really work this way sometimes. i will not make a general statement regarding all phantoms, but for me, mine's about 8 years old and it is working well. no major surgery done on it during my care.

maintenence: i spend 16dollars on EO per oil change (abt every 2500km). throw in the air filter (abt 18dollars) sparkplugs ( ??? dollars) , the latter 2 i do not change as often as my EO.

chain and sprocket, tires will be changed depending on usuage. ($$$ wise, depends on how much u willing to part i.e. what quality of the items u want, i spent abt $180 for chain and sprocket, tires i cant rem)

road tax shld be 60+ per year

for yr age 220.00 will suffice for insurance & transfer. Phantom comes in 150cc (2 stroke) & 200cc (4 stroke) naturally a 2-smoker will require more care. price range for a 8yr old bike, no more than 1.5k

If u dont mind the outlook. i'll say TAKE yamaha RXK.

Bullet proof engine, cheap bike, cheap insurance, cheap & easy maintance, lots of spare part- used & new, 35km/L, every bike shop know how to repair.

Phantom is fine. That's why many people are riding it.

I got a fit-for-scrap 2003 Phantom rebuilt and it's brilliant. I've test rode much older Phantoms that have been on the road for 8 or more years and some of them pack surprisingly good power if they're well maintained or recently overhauled.

It's not as fun as a scrambler but it gets the job done. Rugged and economical, AK47 style.

So, opinion thirded.
