I recently moved back to singapore, and will be attending Uni in about two months. Till then I have decided to get a Bike license etc, but am absolutely lost on how to start. Where I used to live some random person could teach you, and as long as you pass the test you can drive any bike you want. Here its all tiered into 2b, 2a, and 2.

I am just wondering how much are the classes, what would the final cost most likely be, what should I buy as a bike rider in singapore, and any other great tips?

The more detailed the better, thx.

Depending on where you live, you may want to choose the most accessible driving centre to you.

SSDC: Ang Mo Kio (North)

BBDC: Bukit Batok (West)

CDC: Ubi (East)

Personally I spent about $900 for 2B at BBDC few years back. Hope this helps.

Ah well I live in Bukit timah, close to where they are building the new MRT at beauty world.

900 is not bad at all really, I heard it was around 2k sgd.

Can anyone explain to me how it works though?

Ive been on the site but it seems to simply give me schedules etc but not any real information. Maybe im just reading the wrong parts too.

then BBDC will be good for ya. it's near Bt Gombak MRT. if you have a lot of time to kill, you can get your license within 3 mths, provided the test date is in your favour. btw, $2k is for car license.

for bike, you have to attend 4 theory lessons, BTL 1.01 and 1.02 and RTL 1.01 and 1.02. after which, u have to pass the Evaluation for Basic Theory Test(BTT) and then, u may proceed on to take the actual BTT. upon passing, you may then apply for Provisional Driving License(PDL). this license only gives you the right to ride outside of the circuit under the supervision of the instructors.

good luck!

It doesn't take 3 months exactly. Well it depends on how often you wanna go. The more you attend, the earlier you will reach your Traffic Police Test. 3months is just a gauge...

Yah I thought about that but I could not get someone to teach me before I left :/

its ok tho I hear that the teachers here are pretty crazy, so should be good preparation for singapore bike riding.

Ill probably start the whole course thing this week if I can, Im hoping all the classes etc are not full. Im sure ill stick out as it is.

Ah, well I was told that the theory lessons were same for bike as car.

So I need to take the theory then?

Sry I got family that has a "know it all" attitude, and every time I tell them they say Im wrong haha.

I still sort of need a firm grasp of this whole thing, can someone put in a timeline the steps I will take? or maybe just sit down with me and explain it?

Im sorry, its all a bit new and alots goin on atm.

The theory test for bikes and cars are different. Anyway, since you do not have a bike licence from your home country, the point is moot. You must attend theory lessons as well as pass the theory tests before you can apply for a test date, provided you have also attended the required practical lessons.

The timeline very much depends on your competency as well as the lesson structure in the school you have chosen. While the syllabus in all the three driving schools are the same, the lesson structure is slightly different. For example, one school may teach S course in lesson 2 but another school will teach it in lesson 3.

Your competency comes in when the instructor has to evaluate if you have passed that lesson and can go to the next. So while the school may have say 6 lessons, it doesn't mean you only need to go to school 6 times. You may not be able to meet the requirement and have to repeat the lesson. This is also the reason why nobody can tell you exactly how long it will take and how much it will cost.

Choose the school first, read their course structure and you will have a good idea of what you will go through. There's a Driving Centre section in this forum (under Chatter Box) and you can join the thread of your chosen school.

We have one of the strictest vehicular learning process and license assessment worldwide. What lutein said is correct. There will be 8 stages in the practical learning process. If you cannot display competency in any one, you will be asked to repeat that stage, On average, the number of practical lessons you have to attend will between 15 to 30. For theory, you have to understand that bikes and cars behave differently and it is imperative that you understand the characteristics of riding, i.e. centrifugal force and lean angle, yadda, yadda, yadda.

Good luck.
