Its OK , in fact it places less strain on your clutch when UP-shifting - IF done correctly. I do it all the time from 3rd gear up, altho 2nd is also possible but I like to play it safer. However, clutchless down-shifting CANNOT be done. Search the net for tips on how its done.

 

Slipper clutch is a back-torque management device that sort out down shifting to match the engine speed with the tyre speed so that the rear end does not fish tail. Its great for sloppy down-shifting or block down shift at a hurried pace.

 

ok... learn something new... :thumb: with my old S4, I did up-shift w/o clutch a 2-3 times before, but that was when my left hand was busy... :cheeky:

The bike feels perfectly fine shifting up without using the clutch.

2nd gear up does feel a bit dodgy, so guess i'll stick with 3rd and upwards.

 

Now if only someone can teach me how to place my thumb on standby at the horn and still change gears easily... especially useful in traffic jam situations. I find that when i'm changing gears (lower ones), got to take my thumb off... just to warn those lane-switchers who don't look.

Try to get yr thumb off the horn trigger - being edgy abt those cagers only made yr ride unpleasant. In traffic jam situations, keep in a responsive gear so that you can drive out of a situation or take advantage of an opening immediately without the need to change. This might keep yr engine spinning a little higher than u are used to but it can save yr butt in an emergency. Also cover the front brake lever with 2 fingers in case u need to stop suddenly when splitting lanes.

hi.. yes, I still remember u, the red viffer which I viewed 1am in the morning, plus some drinks @ 7-11... hahaha.... hey pal, when did u change ur exhaust to laser? I remember it was stock the other time.. how much did u paid for it? :smile:

Perhaps u r right... but after one bad experience, it's difficult not to want to watch those wandering cars closely.

I try to keep my rpm up at about 5k even in these slow traffic situations... so tends to be gears 1-2 and sometimes 3. This helps with better pick up and the engine braking also slows one down faster even before applying the brakes.

 

As for two fingers on the brake lever... it's become so much of a habit that I don't remember riding without fingers on the brake lever anymore... haha :cheeky:

2 fingers covering the brakes in a jam is not a good experience to me. I reared up into a malaysian bike when he lane change without checking due to unable to have enough stopping power as the throttle is still in open position when I brake. So now I have kick this track braking technique and keep myself always focused on closing the throttle before braking. Most of my biker friends also say two fingers covering the brakes on public roads is unhealthy... Maybe some food for thought...

 

1) During emergencies, human tend to squeeze the brakes without completely releasing the throttle in this technique.

2) If you have a good aftermarket brake system, you may end up with a big misalignment in your wheels which may result in a highside due to excessive stopping power...

3) Considering you save in response time with fingers covering the brakes, can you cope with item 1 and 2?

 

I personally tested and find the proper braking procedure that the schools teach still is the best on the road to me... Maybe you guys can share with me your thoughts? :cheeky:

You're right mate, its a personal thing. The 2-finger cover technique work well for me both on track and on the street. It has saved my butt many time over, including hard stops on the street that has the rear wheel chirping as it unloaded. Its a matter of getting used to it including working the clutch at the same time and closing the throttle. Its gotten to be an automatic response for me.

Perhaps its easier for me cos I got an XL-sized hand keke. cheers.

Hi all

 

Anyone knows how much a handle bar for VFR800 cost? My got bend slightly when a car hit me on the handle bar side with the mirror, I did not fall off, but the handle bar got slight bend, or can I hammer it back or it must be done at a professional place. Thks for any advise.

 

Abt $100~$120 depending where you get them from.

i hv a laser on my vfr..it sounds wonderful..bassy..but performance wise,stock is much better at lower RPM..

Arrghh the lasers looks great on your bike man!!! AAAhhh.. You make me miss my pipes & my bike !!!!!!!

 

I have a a result of the Laser dyno from Unity. The figures showed improvement pretty well on the HP. But on the road, it ain't felt very much due to its weight. but the audio visual effect whenever you start the bike & move off is great.

I thought it's not advisable to do shifting w/o clutch as it's xiong for the engine? :? set aside those equip with slipper clutch... :cheeky:

 

Upshift and downshift can be done and will not affect the engine with it is done withing the correct rpm zone/speed. It all depends on when you do it, which determines if you are going spoil your gearbox much earlier. In fact I used to do clutchless shifting up all gears with resulted in a much more smoother transition compared to using the clutch (asked a pillion to feel).

 

On normals roads doing the clutchless shift is sometimes not feasable as the rpm zone within each gears to enable each upshifts w/o clutch in, will not give you the right amt of torque once you have upshifted. But on full throttle blast till redline rpms, clutchless shift is almost unnoticeable and slightly faster in pickup.

 

Our bikes does not use a H-box gearbox like cars. All you need is to "unload" the clutch plates by easing the throttle a split second before each shift, and the gears will actually slide in nicely.. :cheeky:

hey bro floopy. thanks for yar feedback. I like the way u finish it off with no.4 :lol:

 

I personally have super weak neck & back (as i get aches after riding from bishan to tuas on a sportsbike to work), but the VFR can do 8hrs straight (hatyai) at 140kmh~160kmh without bad fatigue at all. I have took the VFR for a 5 day trip (SG->hatyai>grek->betong->sungei buloh->trengganu-> cherating-> SG), each day consist of 5~7 hrs of riding. End of the day, not much of an ache except my butt :cheeky: (tink I too skinny, bones many)

 

Actually riding at 160kmh~200kmh isn't really that bad on the VFR with an after market windshield. Sometimes makes u "alert" and "awake" after riding 160kmh constant for 3hrs straight. :thumb:

 

But the VFR sure beats riding a sportsbike at 200kmh ducked to the tank for hrs... it is really torture when I rode a sportsbike to cameron...:cry:

Starting to cut the hole with a drill cutter. Hole Saw is not used as Hole Saw has a tendency to slip when in contact with the fairing. Drill Cutter has a more precise cut.

no pillion handlers, my pillion feel uncomfortable....

bike is a repossessed bike...

ex-owner MIA...so can't get back both the items...

Oh OK.. I have a single seater cover also.. super mint!! PM me if you are interested :cheeky: its collecting dust since CNY...

 

Well my '03 VFR never had any rectifier problems till almost 60k mileage. But iI usually bring along 3 things on every trip more than 300km away from SG.

 

1. clutch lever

2. brake lever

3. rectifier

 

I realised these are stuffs that are small light and super useful in a crash/malfunction. Easily replacable with simple tools and continue riding.
