sorry i couldnt make it today throttle. juz got home from my cousin's place.

had a rjy petit piramides on cny eve. for a EL, it certainly wasnt up to expectations. it lacked depth, though it was definitely stronger than a rjy ex no.4.

wrapper was dark and oily, and the draw was juz rite. almost perfect burn, and the ash was nice and white. i guess juz lookin at it burn sorta made up for the lack of flavors.

I had an RyJ PP EL in Bangkok's white chamber quite a long while ago.

It was alright but then again not what i would like for an EL too.

I guess if you have more , just age them for a while and pull one out for a taste test when you feel like it again.

Entity and some of my other friends say Cafe Del Mar pretty nice.

Have been thinkning about going down there for a puff. But wonder if tonite it'll be open or not.

No fantastic smokes for me yet this round.

Just enjoyed a Romeo y Julieta Romeo No.2; this was the last one from the cardboard 5-pack I got from the Shanghai airport last month. I don't know if its my humidor (only 2 weeks inside) or the cosy environs (toilet), but the cigar was very pleasant indeed. Woody, toasty, consistent. Ash fell off after 2". Needed frequent touchups with the lighter. Lasted about 75 mins.

The Montecristo Petit Tubos were very nice too, albeit with somewhat stronger taste but thinner smoke?

Overall, given the price differential - US$30 for 5xRomeo No.2 vs. US$44 for 5xPetit Tubos - I'd be going for the Romeos again...

Others:

- RyJ Exhibtion No.4: Nice and certainly more complex than the Romeo No.2

- HdM Epicure No.2: As mentioned earlier in the forum - creamy. Nice. Robusto vitola - I like.

Sidenote: On a few cigars, which went well for the first 2/3, the last third unfortunately had a distinct plastic taste. Any idea why this is the case? Incomplete combustion perhaps?

In any case, Happy new year everyone

on your sidenote, it's probably conditioning.

the plastic taste can come and go anywhere .

Myself, had a really good-tasting 2001 Diplomaticos No. 2 at the Alley Bar last night. only thing, it was a little "wet" so draw was bit tight.

Had another Montecristo Petit Tubo (this is basically the No.4 in a tube right?).

Unfortunately, my palate is not very refined, so the main difference I detected with the RyJ Romeo No.2 yesterday was.... the Montecristo was stronger, and the RyJ was more floral? Some plastic-y tendencies towards the end, which as Throttle suggests, is probably down to poor conditioning. I suspect the Montecristo is the popular DFS (duty-free) pick at the airport, hence it is younger than the RyJs which sit around in the DFS humidor longer. Also this would account for some of the price differential.

Overall, this for me confirms my previous post... RyJ Romeo No.2 > Montecristo Petit Tubo, given the price.

Next up for me is to pick up some singles which are creamy/coffee/caramel/robusto:

- Hdm Epicure No.2

- any other suggestions?

Hi there!

I don't really like monte cristo petit tubos as well. RYJ is more complex and more flavour than MC. I think it's no.4 in a tubes as well. RYJ no2 is i think a RYJ PC in tubes. I try MC4 and MC4 aged, MC petit tubos. They all have the character and all i encounter have rather bad burn. All burn are very uneven. I also rather prefer RYJ to MC no.4. I notice that recent RYJ PC has very dark wrapper. I have two in my humidor that is as dark as Partagas D no.3 EL 2006.

Just finish a Diplomaticos N0.4, some say it's similar to MC no.4 but i think it's has better burn and construction than MC4. They a bit of similiar character but i think it's better than MC4 and cheaper. I think for cigar price isn't everything. The character, taste and how you enjoy is more important than anything. I do enjoy a quintero brevas very much.

I would recommend you Epicure no.2 if you like, similiar robusto will be Partagas D4 and RJY short churchill. For mareva, you might wanna try Bolivar PC or tubos 2, cohiba siglo2, Hoyo Short coronas or Por Larranaga Pc if you prefer some more spices.

I new to habanos also but really great to enjoy the special and unique flavour of all the habanos. Hope you guys have a great new year ahead with lots of great smokes!

I basically dont do Tubos now.

I find the quality of Tubos generally lacking.

Also many big ring gauge cigars dont come in tubos.

Tubos are very good items to buy at DFS.

but now that there are 3 in a pack for the popular robustos like epi2 and D4, it may make more sense to buy those than the RyJ , Upmann, Bolivar or Monte tubos.

Enjoy your CNY smokes

Regarding tubos, last time habanos mostly use tubos for machine made and lower grade cigar. But i think they are going to change that image. I read from some article that habanos are going to introduce tubos this year for the Cohiba Siglo series, some RYJ, H.Upmann Magnum46 and Monte Cristo Edmundo. It looks like tubos are in trend again haha. Personally i do like tubos a lot, only the aluminium tube not the cigar inside. Cause i can reuse the tubes for my outdoor smokes and for display in my cabinet haha.

Yes, I was speaking in general.

Tubos will be very popular if Habanos packaged them with the top sellers. Imagine Tubo Piramides! Tubo Robustos!

Currently some premium cigars are sold in tubos already.

Siglo VI and II has tubos.

RyJ Short Churchill and Churchill has Tubos

Monte Londales has Tubo.

No offence but Tubos are basically not designed for the seasoned smoker though. It sells well to the walk-in customers who buy by individual sticks. seasoned cigar smokers buy boxes and prefer the unadulterated classic wooden box packaging.

True true tubos are not really for seasoned smoker. Tubos are like fast food, glad and go, smoke and throw. I only collect them and i don't normally go back to buy again cause their condition are really poor. I will rather buy their sworn brother like RYJ no.2 and RYJ PC. I think habanos are having very aggressive marketing nowadays so expect more and more fancy design or size coming from habanos. Like bro throttle say before habanos are more commercialised rather than socialism. Look like they are copying china model haha. Viva Revolution!

hi happy new yr to all..time to share my experience with the RYJ Ex No4;

firstly im not an experienced smoker...this is my 3rd try.... i have to say its not a pleasant experience...compairing to my previous smoke EL REY DEL MUNDO choix supreme.... i got the RYJ from OAKS,

cutting as per normal...... toast the tip slightly with butane lighter....and light with matches....okie lighting up was quite i chore as draw was tight ..tried drawing before lighting..feels ok...but when comes to lighting took quite some effort to get a even burn...(anyone pointers?)..

ashes are dark grey slightly whitish but not as white as i expect it to be..another friend of mine smoking the same stuff bought from same place got a nice WHITE ash..and managed a 1.5incher.....(shitzzz) i barely made an inch... :(

overall tastes slightly toasty and some coffee flavour i guess......the whole ordeal was disturbing cos im having problems with the draw compairing to the smooooooth draw of the Choix supreme.... maybe its my luck..i dunno...im an amateur. :D

total time taken 75 mins.........for Choix supreme was like ard 50 mins. (abit fast as mentioned..)

thats all..... :D

unfortunate, i must say. Yes, Luck plays a big roll in life. heh heh

The Ryj ExNo.4 is one of the most consistent smokes in my humidor.

Have run through 4 - 5 boxes of those already.

A bad draw is a major problem and seriously screws up the whole experience. this flaw will cause bad burn which cause bad taste and a tough time puffing.

But dont write the ExNo.4 off your list, this is a winning underrated, well priced cigar in many aficianados' books

Cheers

anyone who has some time between 1 - 3 pm tomorrow, plse join me for a smoke. probably at Con Divan.

Partagas Serie D No.4

Psychic sick stick

After reading so many raves about this cigar (on this board and elsewhere), this was something I had to try. In particular, many people had commented that it was great straight out of the box; albeit much better after aging.

I purchased a single from Oaks at Takashimaya. The cigar looked wonderful - dark chocolatey and oily as heck. In fact, it even seemed waxed.

On to the tasting. The draw was tight as the proverbial witch's t*t. Immediately, plastic-y flavours were apparent. Ah, my first sick stick? Was sorely tempted to dispose of it after 5 mins. Nonetheless given the expense ($36 for a single), I soldiered on. Not very wise. More plastic-y flavours.... no complex notes (cocoa/coffee etc.).... and even a sour/tangy after-taste.

Even more unfortunate, the cigar seemed to sense my dark thoughts and promptly deposited 1.5" of hot ash on my hand. KNNBCC^.

Deciding to cut my losses and prevent any more hot ashes from cooking other more delicate parts of my anatomy, I guillotined the sucker with 2" left.

Regardless - I'll give the Serie D No.4 another shot. Will stick the next one in the humidor for a long time before tasting.

Very nice chap and the cigars are well kept in a controlled room. Nice shiny wrapper, no cracks, draw is nice and pack is solid.

yes, you need to try many more.

smoking a cigar which you personally condition would be a better gauge as you never what the cigar's been through before you lit it up

Just went down to Oaks(Orchard Parade Hotel) and they having Trinidad Robusto Extra for offer at $49 and Montecristo No.4 aged for $20. I find out that their Cohiba Reserva is selling as individual stick as well. Talking about MC no.4,i try 4 of them including aged, i can say that it really sucks ,very inconsistent and uneven burn. I work in a bar and i see most(99%) of the mediacorp artist do like to smoke MC no.4 haha, is it really good smoke or they don't know any other cigar else? Just my two cents worth....
