Just went down to Oaks(Orchard Parade Hotel) and they having Trinidad Robusto Extra for offer at $49 and Montecristo No.4 aged for $20. I find out that their Cohiba Reserva is selling as individual stick as well. Talking about MC no.4,i try 4 of them including aged, i can say that it really sucks ,very inconsistent and uneven burn. I work in a bar and i see most(99%) of the mediacorp artist do like to smoke MC no.4 haha, is it really good smoke or they don't know any other cigar else? Just my two cents worth....

Monte4 is an OK smoke but anyone stuck on that is most likely a novice or has very restrictive taste buds

It's the most mass produced Habano. Very popular for the brand, format and price for someone starting out

Bot a box of 1996 Monte2 and 1997 Upmann Monarchs and connected with a friend of a friend, thanx to Naz. This thread is more powerful than Friendster! heh heh........

I propose a mid week smoke.

Hopefully, we have more people who are free this time.

some from Con Divan, some from EBay, some from my overseas trips, Spain, Cuba, Indonesia, Hong Kong.

I like some designs and colors, so usually pick those that are not so dull. The next one will be green.

Sorry boys. Just got back from my night lesson.

I'm doing the 3rd stick from the Monte 5.

And my first tiny humidor and cutter just arrived.

Good opportunity to practise.

Oh yeah, just unravelled one good cigar accidentally. It really unravelled at a swift pace.

great.. just great...

Draw and burn was good.

The Monte2 tasted clearly aged.

Started off peanutty and very slightly tangy, turned a bit cardboardy and tapered off to a light toast. Aroma was really Monte....

It was smooth with no bite at all.

Felt that some flavors had gone with the age. Until the next one......

Had the best ever Upmann Monarcas in my life tonite. (1997)

From start to finish, perfect draw, superb burn, splendid aromas and deep flavors and unsurprising complexity.

Enjoyed it so much, I would rate that particular cigar 100/100 in my books!!! Amazing , just amazing. I'm now at a loss for words.

glad you enjoyed your smoke throttle, for being speechless after such an amazing cigar..i found some questions for you...or anyone here who have a clue....

ok noob questions here :D

why does a cigar keep having uneven burns even when it is properly lighted in a virtually windless room and help properly constantly rotating to prevent uneveness...YET it still burns uneven...damm

why does a cigar keep "goin out" having to relight time and time again?...was it not rolled properly?..or?....

how do you differentiate a RYJ Ex 4 from a RYJ bought in a convenient store as i realise both bands are similiar....no indications watsoever...

thank you..any help is deeply appreciated....

Your uneven burn could be due to inadequate conditioning or lower quality or bad rolling or the bane of all cigar smokers - bugs.

For inadequate conditioning, there is a remedy, it is advisable to leave newly bought cigars in the humidor for a few weeks to stabilise the condition before smoking

If it's a cigar of lower quality with not so good leaves. (Many cheaper cigars from convenience stores are categorised here) A bad burn is fairly common. No remedy.

For bad roll, no remedy. Bad roll does not only mean plugged draw.

A bad roll can also be when the leaves are not bunched together properly such that the draw may still be ok but the airflow going in is inconsistent.

Lastly, if there were bug holes within the cigar, you will have the feeling of a good draw but your cigar will not seem to be burning right at all and if you are "lucky" enough, you will see tiny perfect circles burning through the wrapper even before the burn line touches it. The holes within the cigar opens up little "arteries" making the airflow go haywire. No Remedy

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

differntiating an RyjNo4 with an Ryj from convenience store.

=======================================

YEs they all share the same band becos they belong to the same brand.

But take a closer look. The formats sold in convenience store is differnt from the EXNo.4

The ExNo.4 is a HErmosoNo.4 size so the one thing that is clearly different is the rring gauge or fatness of the cigar. Of course, light it up , put it to your mouth and everything will unfold ...

RyJ makes quite a few petite coronas but it only makes one hermoso No. 4 just like many other brands as well.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Words can only do so much for an explanation.

The quickest way to learn more is to enjoy a good smoke with the guys here.

sorry I forgot to directly address your question on the cigar going out.

That is also related to the reasons I've given in one way or another.

If the cigar is particularly "wet" it would go out quicker than usual and may not burn so well too.

Lastly, maybe the interval between each puff you take could be too long?

Uneven burn - If this happens in a windless place, it is due to the rolling of the cigar. A well-made cigar should have even "bunching" of the leaves for a uniform flow of air through the cigar to ensure an even burn. Sadly, even premium Cuban brands sometimes are not well rolled. Possibly due to the huge demand for them, resulting in them not caring too much about quality control, and also trying to roll cigars as fast as they can. Premium non-Cubans are usually better rolled.

"Going out" - As a friend once said, "You've to treat a cigar like a woman, and pay regular attention to it. Otherwise, it would give up on you." A regular rhythm of drawing the smoke every 20-30 seconds should ensure that the cigar burns properly without going out. Also, if the cigar is been rolled too tight, the cigar would be hard to keep lit.

I dun believe RYJ Ex No. 4 is sold in convenience stores. I think you're talking about the RYJ No. 2 Tubos. In which case, their sizes are different. Nevertheless, it is the "responsibility" of the cigar buyer to remember and note exactly which cigar they bought. However, for an experienced cigar smoker, he/she will be able to tell the difference from the scent, wrapper colour, etc.

if it affects the draw, then it possibly will, the burn.
