The economic landscape in Singapore is changing in relation to its neighbours, and in Asean. Wondering anyone notice the shift.

Basically the killer punch came when all manufacturers relocated to China or India, and Sg being stuck far away from this crucial manufacturing hub and Americas & Europe where the source of consumption is, freight rates is narrowing the profit margin, or if there is one to worth the trade anymore. In electronics industry there is different levels of components, ours happens to be the lower end, non-assembly parts, thats why these parts are easily found in China & India, i think most suppliers of these parts have also moved out.

Any other industry suffer weak biz despite "Sg's economic recovery"?

Another industry comes to mind, hawking, nobody can make a decent profit selling $2.50 - $3 dishes nowadays. With inflation, rising transport prices, our food imports are dam expensive. Notice more and more restaurants are popping up all over the place, including franchise. With rising rental, its insane to continue the hawker fare biz and sell cheap food. The hawkers have to work twice as hard to beat inflation. Whereas restaurants charges at least $20 or more a dish, plus service charges, plus plus.

The other muscle in F&B is Mcdonalds, BK, KFC who can sustain thru economies of scale selling their set meals $5-$6 each. We are going to lose alot of traditional cooking in hawker food soon, all become kopitiam, koufu liao.

I have a feeling, food prices is going to rise these few years.

you would be surprised...

i know of several hawkers drive jaguars and stay landed...

Yes i am aware of the good 'o days. But now are they making as much? Rental is a killer for those starting out. Some hawkers already owned their own premises, these are the pioneers who save on rental by buying up their premises.

I disagree. I would love to be a hawker.
