since we're talking abt helmet, is it legal to have shaded helmet? --> you can't see the rider face

i bought one back from Indo, it's very popular over there, but not sure if this one is singapore compliant... sure no psb sticker, cost me a little over $30

Fully tinted/ mercury tinted visors are not allowed. Slightly smoked visor(,30%?) is approved though.

Fully tinted visors are next to useless on rainy days.

I was at regina yesterday, saw the salesman selling ff to a indonesian and he demo that ff A the shell can be compressed, FF B the shell cannot compress the FF B is nolan. And FF A is some carbon brand or sth.

So can compress or cannot better? He applied pressure to the neck part of the shell, the opening.

i'm interested to know which one the salesman claimed to be better.

the issue of hard vs soft is essentially the snell v dot argument, for those in the know. i posted an article on the thread about dot/snell/ece helmets in the accessories section.

this is provided the 'soft' helmet was deliberately made soft to absorb impact, and the 'hard' helmet deliberately made hard to withstand multiple shocks from hard objects. if this is the case, then the experts are still arguing which concept is safer.

but if the helmet was hard/soft/bendable because the manufacturer couldn be bothered to make it properly, then all bets are off.

how to tell? i always say, look for dot or snell or ece safety badges.

It's true: it's more fun to ride a slow bike fast than to ride a fast bike slow. Admittedly, though... It is MOST fun to ride a fast bike fast!

imho the only 'valid' counter-argument against FF helmets that i've been able to tolerate is "I cant afford an FF, they're too ex".

this was the crux of my post in accessories section about 'affordable' FF. lately i see shops stocking almost exclusively high-end models like arai, shoei, x-lite and suomy. one forumer posted in my other thread saying shoei "not that expensive" coz u can get a Z6 for $500. no offence to the forumer, but a $500 item being considered 'inexpensive', i envy your lifestyle.

in am sympathetic to bikers on a budget because i myself grew up in a low income family, and when i first entered biking i definitely couldn afford anything more that a $55 psb open face. the idea that "dont ride bike if you cant afford ff/jacket/gloves/boots", to me is a snobbish sentiment.

BUT.... "cannot afford" and "not worth the money" are two very different things. if i see a cub-chai decked out with a few hundred dollars worth of aesthetic goodies, that rider telling me "cant afford ff" is talking bullcrap, wat he realli means is he thinks its not worth the money.

thats why i argued in my other thread that shops need to sell quality cheap full faces for the masses, not just shoei and arai. an mhr full face used to cost under $200, but where are they now? forget comparison between mhr and shoei; we need cheap and effective full face to convince open face users in the first place. helmets like the HJC CL-ST sold at motorworld for $150, with $50 off old helmet trade-in. $100 for an effective FF makes it almost inexcusable to wear open face.

and once the masses start wearing these effective albeit cheap FF, we can start changing mindsets. i remember 10 years ago there was such a lack of awareness that ppl including bikers believed that full faces were merely fashion statements and were actually unsafe compared to open face. even psb refused to legalise them, and there was a time when a rider wearing FF would be booked on sight.

but mindsets have changed, awareness has increased. now, a rider on a class 2 bike with an FF on doesn raise eyebrows, everybody know its for safety. and we need to continue changing mindsets further, until a new generation of bikers no longer consider it odd to see class 2b bikers wearing FF, be it a cub or scooter or cruiser.

of cos new la... all branded helmet manufacturers will warn you against buying used or borrowing someone's helmet... and i agree.

2nd hand helmet - you dunno whether helmet has been dropped b4 or kenna hard impact, sometimes exterior look fine but the shock absorbing inner shell got crack or deteriorated.

-you want to smell another person's sweat or dead skin particles? not me...

and i wont lend my personal helmets to anyone, not because im selfish, but my helmet is my life-saver and im a hygiene freak especially when it comes to helmets...

I agree with all of mechwira's comments but one:

Expensive helmets - I honestly do feel that if you can afford to buy a bike, you can afford to buy a FF, even if it's much more than $200. Sure it might mean delaying buying a bike for a month or two while you save money for a FF, but it's not exactly impossible. I came from a low income family too and I remember saving up for my inline skates AND gear (elbow and knee pads) when I was younger. I did not skate until I could afford my safety gear. If I had a low income now, I'd do the same for biking. Defer the bike until I could buy good safety gear, or buy a cheaper bike and get my gear (personally, I'd choose the former).

I also believe that when people do actually realise that they could get seriously hurt riding bikes, and that if they ruin their face on the tarmac, life will never be the same again, they would have little trouble saving and spending $300-$500 to minimise that risk.

Actually checking blind spot not exactly difficult. At least for me cos my arai is with the larger visor opening one I am not sure if it is any larger than usual full face cos this is my first ff. But it did became more difficult after I got my alpinestar riding jacket with shoulder pads, kinda restrict head movement to the side.

Don't hesitate anymore go to chiap lee and get ur arai! Make sure get a size smaller than ur head cos the padding will soft. Mine after wearing 1 mth plus soft liao. Wonder can change to thicker padding anot.

Goodluck!

been on my shark ff, komine denin and mesh jacket with hard amour or rs taichi full mesh jacket with soft amour and addition back protector. still lacking on lower limbs protection, just simple boots and jean though. seems like rs taichi had removed certain models, thinking of getting back the old one, my had some road rash on the right elbow =(

and actually its not that hot, and i had never ridden with a open face (except bbdc) before. mesh jacket is actually cooler under hot sun, and prevent you from getting weird farmer tans especially if you travel alot. its not that bad actually. i am considering on investing a flip up and a proper boots as well, perhaps perforated leather top as well, if i could find one that i like(especially reading some articles where mesh melted and stick to the flesh after road rash)

been dressing like this since i pass my 2b. i get more thumbs up from fello riders than people laughing at me, so it arent that bad.

hi guys, i'm searching for FF helmets but my budget is limited to $200 cos i need to get 2 of them for the time being...

i'm actually looking into HJC but wud like to know more, comparing to brands like OGK, KBC, AGV & any other cheaper range?

LAB quote me $300 for the AGV solid black color (i din ask for the model...) but dats out of my budget...

is the wind-noise for HJC very loud, travelling between $110~150km/h?

i truly understand the importance of a FF helmet but i cant afford to get a higher range... plz help me by giving me some advise.

used to wore arai rapide (cant rmb how to spell but its sealed up in my cupboard, over-aged, its more than 5yrs old...) & shoei x series (cant rmb wat number is dat... )

arai gives me the better feel at high speed. not asking for the same but at least not the worse. :cheeky:

yup, who cares about how others see or think about us? dats only in sg. shud tell them how the ppl in europe see them. NONE of the europeans wear shorts, even riding a 125 skipper. i know its the weather diff but dats the appearance. cos ppl in slippers & singlets din even know how they think. its the protection dat matters, not the weather. y wud they wear a full suit going to work rather than having windbreakers?

i used to ride sports bike, at least with FF helmet, glove, jeans & covered shoes. same mentality goes for now, riding a spark. not showing off anything, juz wana share the importance of having the right gear on the road. cheers ^_^
