I usually tell my peers to get a laptop that fits their lifestyle and budget.

An i3 is your typical web-surfing, word processing, and maybe Farmville-game playing laptop or desktop

Up it to i5 and you can do all that plus watch HD movies while burning a CD or creating a home movie clip

An i7 is typically used when you definitely need no downtime or lag

This is also dependent on if the software or game you are playing supports the i7 quad-core processors; elsewise no difference in improvement - a lot of people believe that i7 is faster and better, sometimes that may not be the case.

As you know nowadays, laptop manufacturers can up or down their laptop pricing to meet demand, so nowadays don't be surprised to see a more expensive i5 than a cheaper competing i7. It all boils down to brandname, the other things apart from the i- series processors, like how much RAM memory, or what comes bundled with the laptop.

It's up to your budget. Or, if you want to keep a laptop for a long time and are willing to fork out slightly more, go for either renowned laptop brands with longer warranties. I cannot emphasize enough on warranty. Renowned brands like Dell, HP, are under public scrutiny because so many go for their products. Therefore, they are forced to make better quality laptops.

End of the day, no one laptop manufacturer "makes the best, dependable, breakdown-free" laptop because laptop parts are sourced from so many different places that are pieced into one machine. It's how the laptop manufacturer designs and pieces them together and ensures that they run problem-free...that's the factor in how reputable they are. Even then we can't tell much for sure because usually in tradeshows we are used to be wow'ed by their glamorous adverts and offerings.

personally I wouldn't recommend netbook from my experience. Even for normal surfing, office applications, they are rather slow. But my netbook is only a single core processor. Not too sure about the dual core processor netbook in the market now, probably it runs faster

No offense but Acer is a no-no IMO. Many problems arises in Acer laptops within 1 year, including mine. Their integrated web-cams especially(at least for me and many of my friends).

Toshiba/Asus for the reliable machine!

A netbook will be good for your case if you only need it for these basic uses. However, laptop is recommended because as time to come, you might be interested in some games and laptop can usually last longer with their specs.

Try looking for those lightweight laptops, would be a smarter choice.
