Proton cannot even make their own chassis. Publish a design competition and select the winning design as their new car's outlook like VW iScirocco and Peugeot 1007. They even have problems selling their Campro engine. The Peroduo Daihatsu engines even outsells the proton. Then Proton have to tap on the Lotus brand to promote their 'lotus tuned handling' which I believe is nothing but a farce. Lotus have nothing to do with their handling tuning. Proton just happened to own Lotus. This is my own personal view of Proton.

To be fair to Proton, they are not the only one doing that. The same chassis is used on different manufactures to reduce R&D, and production cost. Even prestigious brand like Porsche is "guilty" of that as their Cayenne shares the same chassis as the VW Touareg. The best part is that the Prosche Cayenne is not even manufactured by Porsche

Don't be too hard on them. Proton bought Lotus so they can conveniently use its name for Proton. It's exactly the same for Fiat STILO which has a SCHUMACHER SPECIAL version, just because FIAT owns Ferrari, and M. Schumacher was then a Ferrari driver.

In the commercial world, a simple re-badging exercise is the easiest, and fastest way to add premium to a product.

Not true bro...

Cayenne and Touareg are not the same cars even though they may share some parts. This is because they are supplied by the same supplier on some parts. Based on that and we considered the same will be extremely far fetched. Let's take a some examples:

As seen above is the steering gear assembly of the two cars who do not share the same part number even though the design may be the same. This is because of different technical reasons as they do not share the same part. Porsche is built by Porsche using a Porsche blueprint but they employ the use of many suppliers to help make it possible yet with an attractive price tag. The VW Touareg also uses many suppliers. In the German auto industry, the usual suppliers dominate the market:

ZF - getriebe, kupplungsatz, stoßdämpfer, lenksysteme, fahrwerktechnic etc.

LuK - kupplungsatz, lenksysteme etc.

Bilstein - stoßdämpfer etc.

TRW - lenksysteme etc.

BOSCH - Elektrosystem, bremssystem etc.

and so on...

Of course there are parts which may share the same platforms like the following with the same cars as above,

Produkt: Kupplungs ausrücklager

AUDI OE Number

08D 141 165 A (17.08.2009)

PORSCHE OE Number

955.116.080.00 (17.08.2009)

VOLKSWAGEN OE Number

Designation

AUDI :

Q7 (4L)

3.6 FSI (206 kW ; 08/2006 - )

PORSCHE :

CAYENNE (955)

3.2 (184 kW ; 10/2003 - )

S 4.5 (250 kW ; 09/2002 - )

3.6 (213 kW ; 02/2007 - )

S 4.8 (283 kW ; 02/2007 - )

GTS 4.8 (298 kW ; 10/2007 - )

VOLKSWAGEN :

TOUAREG (7LA, 7L6, 7L7)

3.2 V6 (162 kW ; 10/2002 - 11/2006)

3.6 V6 FSI (206 kW ; 03/2006 - 05/2010)

2.5 R5 TDI (120 kW ; 08/2003 - 05/2010)

2.5 R5 TDI (128 kW ; 01/2003 - 05/2010)

3.0 V6 TDI (165 kW ; 11/2004 - 05/2010)

As you see here. Platform engineering is totally different from copying. While extensive work have been placed in the development of Touareg and Cayenne, it is not the same for the mitsubishi copy Proton Waja. Even Audi and VW share the same platform engineering on many of their products, they don't copy each other.

Indeed, it is nonetheless commercially a brilliant move for Proton to acquire the rights to copy Mitsubishi's Lancer EX after the rejections it received from many other reowned car makers. But in the view of an engineering perspective, it is nothing but mere copy cat. So long it sells, nothing else matters.

Wait till the full WTO effect kicks in, and Proton won't be having any preferential treatment, then they have to compete with more fairly with Thailand Toyotas and Hondas.

Malaysia spending so much money to put Lotus back into F1, naturally Proton will squeeze as much out of Lotus as they can.

The Lotus F1 cars look really good but can't say the same for their performance. :p
