This trip report is written from my personal point of view and may not suit the pallet of everyone. Hope you guys will pardon my language. Some of the timings/distances may not be 100% accurate as I did not have a watch, my GPS and HP were dead.

Basically, it was me, my bike, my map and endless road ahead.

We were on an adventure.. Whoever said we needed a big bike to go on an adventure?? IMHO only excuses ...

I hope this trip report can serve as a motivation for those who aspire to go to on long rides alone. For those who have been there and done that, please share your expierence so that others can benefit from it.

Lastly, I would like to dedicate this ride to my buddies, Koh & Elvin. And also trip advisor Daniel.

Day 1 (GP Esso 0530hrs – Phattalung 2000hrs)

I initially planned to set of from GP Esso at 4am but I overslept and set off at 5.30am

12 hours of boring and uneventful NSHW later, I was at the Thai border at 5.30pm.

Cleared the customs at 6pm and continued to my initial destination (Trang)

However, as I had set off later than initially planned, I did not have sufficient daylight left to reach Trang. Thus, I went into Phattalung to rest for the night. To my dismay, all the hotels I approached were fully booked as there is a sports event held during the weekend.

I gave up after asking about 5 hotels and decide to proceed to Trang which was about 50km away. However, luck was on my side as I found a motel just outside of Phattalung for 300B.

Day 2 (Phattalung 0600hrs – Ratchaburi 1900hrs)

Rode past Trang, Wang Sa, Chaiya, Tha Sae, Cha Am enroute to Ratchaburi.

I dropped my yellow waterproof bag that was tightly strapped on the rack on my rear box during the ride from Cha’Am to Ratchaburi (which contained my camera charger, GPS charger and HP charger, raincoat, slippers and toiletries)

I found that securing accommodation will be my biggest challenge during this trip. This night I slept in a hotel that was built in the 1920s. There were WWII pictures in the lobby and the furniture was really very old. The hotel really spooked me even though I was freaking tired to think. Cost 350B.

That night I went to the Ratchaburi walking street that was beside the famous floating market to have a walk at the night bazaar to have dinner etc.

DIY engine oil change to keep the engine healthy.

Day 3 (Ratchaburi 0700hrs to Mae Sot 1700hrs)

Rode past Supan Buri , Chai Nat, Nahkon Sawan , Kamphaeng Phet enroute to Mae Sot.

It rained like crazy several times during the ride and I learnt to love the rain bcoz I cant avoid it without my rain coat. At least my bike will run cooler.

I reached Mae Sot roughly about 5pm. 1st destination was the friendship bridge for photo taking, thereafter, I took a ride around town to explore. I found that the streets were very complicated and confusing and I got ‘lost’ several times. The town population was ‘separated’ by the different ethnic groups.

My bike needed petrol and rest. Thus, I decide to ride to the PTT station to look for the ‘hello kitty’ Amazon café girl that Daniel told me about. After calling Daniel, the description didn’t fit, thus I concluded that she wasn’t working that day.

The sky was getting dark and now I needed to ride back into town to look for a hotel.

Managed to get a hotel with full teak furnishing for 500B. Rode around town to explore, had dinner and visited a LAN shop to play face book.

BTW, my iphone died on me (batt flat) so I was to continue my journey without my GPS and handphone. Old school riding with the bike and map as my best friends. I had to push on. My destination is near.

Day 4 (Mae Sot 0700hrs to Mae Hong Son 1700hrs)

I set off from the hotel to go to the friendship bridge area to look for the famous morning market, but it was closed that day. WTF?!

Proceeded on the my destination for the day. Mae Hong Son.

This day, I got my toughest riding lesson (200km of hellish roads from Mae Sot to Mae Sariang) It was drizzling, I was cold and wet, so was the road. The terrain was really bad, steep hairpin turns, uncountable number of portholes, cows, goats, dogs, cow dung etc. It was unimaginable. I’m never going through this route ever again. Not even on a scrambler. =(

I heaved a huge sign of relief when I finally reached Mae Sariang. The weather so scorching that I had to take my soaking shoes and socks off and dry them in the sun a little. Pure ecstasy.

But then, I realised I needed a screw. My rear number plate had lost a screw and was dangling; no wonder the motosai behind me horned at me =( luckily for me again, I brought lots of spares so this was solved easily.

The route from Mae Sariang to Mae Hong Son was splendid. I couldn’t resist myself when I saw the corners and help myself to them. I was actually enjoying it.. WTF again?!

Reached Mae Hong Son at about 4pm and found hotel panorama easily. Quickly checked in and went about town to explore. Cost 500B.

Mae Hong Son is actually quite a boring town, really made me wonder what’s the hype about it. Managed to get the MHS certification from the commerce office though. Feels as if I just graduated. LOL.

Day 5 (Mae Hong Son 1000hrs – PAI 1300hrs)

Manage to get a good sleep. Can laze in bed till 9am.. Just a short ride to PAI today.

Plenty of curves and bends on the road, terrain was still very steep but there were fewer portholes and cows.. So I rode very hard in the corners again.. LOL =p..

Reached PAI about 1pm. PAI is really a very nice town. Very lomantic. I like the place a lot. It is not really expensive even though it is a very touristy town.

PAI is my ‘destination’ for this trip so I was very happy when I finally arrived. All that hard riding was worth it when I finally reached this place. The feeling of Self actualization is priceless.

After recce-ing the town, I checked in to Brooks resort. A hotel with a very chalet-feel. Got a nice room with a great view of the river PAI. 600B

Managed to explore the town and the area surrounding it as I had quite many hours of daylight left. This is a really beautiful place to live. I’m definitely coming back again. I'll be back. Next time, i'll fly in to Chiangmai and take the cute little bus to PAI. Mopeds can be leased in town for 100B/day.

Day 6 (PAI 0700hrs to Chiang Rai 1900hrs)

Set off 7am from PAI in search for the ‘ride in the clouds’. The feeling was simply orgasmic and surreal.

You won’t be able to imagine it until you experience it yourself. This is what riding is all about.

I reached Chiangmai and had an early lunch.. Over a bowl of beef noodles, I managed to convince myself that I needed to go to the Golden triangle. (Its was not in my plans and this may be my 1 and only chance to ride there)

Decided on a route less travelled, route 118. This is a superb road to ride. (No cars, portholes, dogs, goats, cows, cow dungs) from Phrao to Wiang Pa Pao. I rode very hard through this mountain road again.. The corners were fantasic.. very orgasmic indeed. Manage to ride in the clouds again… woo hoo… IMHO is 200% better than PAI to Chaingmai.

After passing Chiangrai, I decided to go to the 2nd friendship bridge at Mae Sai which was about 50km from the Golden triangle. Nothing special, just a photo taking opportunity.

About 15 km from the Golden triangle, disaster struck!! The road suddenly became mud tracks… WTF??!!! Being over confident of my scrambler skills and due to high fatigue level.. I decided to go through the mud track…There was no way for me to turn back after riding so far for this I thought.

What a bad decision that proved to be. After 2km or so, I self skidded @ 10km/h or so.. Bike landed in the soft mud and my clutch lever broke…-_-

I thought to myself.. This is it.. Siao liao… Bike cant start, sky getting dark, no HP to call for help, isolated jungle road…Dunno got tiger in the jungle anot?? My morale dropped like a stone thrown off an airplane…

Couldn’t start my bike for 5 mins or so… carb flooded.. I drained the card and managed to start the bike and ½ f4rk ride the bike back to Changrai.

All the bike shops are closed for the night.. So I had no choice but to find a hotel to stay for the night.. Diamond plaza Inn 550B

That night I went to the Chiangrai night bazaar and for a traditional thai massage to sooth my bruised ego. This is a beautiful place that I would want to visit again.

Day 7 (Chiangrai 0700hrs – Tak 1900hrs)

I woke up early and rode around town for a good hour to look for a bike shop to replace my clutch lever. But its too early, most shops not opened yet.

End up I found the Honda service centre just opposite my hotel. WTF right??!!

Had the clutch lever replaced for 100B and went to a temple for a prayer before I started my 2nd assault on the Golden triangle via Chiang Saen. You can bruise my ego, but you won’t break my determination. It was raining cats and dogs but the ride was easier than I though.

Managed to reach the Golden triangle just before lunch…

After this, I was homeward bound, managed to adjust my front wheel toward the direction of home. Rode southward past Chiangrai, Phayao, Lampang till I reached the TAK where I stayed for the night at the Viet Tiang hotel (4star) 900B.

Day 8 (TAK 0800hrs to Bangkok 1800hrs)

Started the day with hotel buffet breakfast. 1st time for this trip.

My destination for the day is Ayutthya. Rode past Kamphaeng Phet, Nakhon Sawan, Sing Buri to reach Ayutthaya at about 3pm.

I explored Ayuttaya for a good 2 hours or so den decided that it is boring and not worth for me to stay for the night.

I decided to move further southward to Bangkok. I always wanted to visit Khao San Road in Bangkok as I have not done so before, thus, it became my new destination for the night. Reached just before nightfall and checked in to the Secret Garden Inn. 500B

Riding a small bike in Bangkok evening rush hour is ok, not as bad as when I rode a big bike and the temp meter shot to redline and I had to switch the engine off.

The night bazaar at the Khao San Road area is really huge and I walked a good deal that night and had lots of street food. Did not do any shopping though as nothing seems to interest me… Maybe I was lonely and missing home already.. Finally managed to buy a charging cable for my iphone.

Day 9 (Bangkok 0700hrs to Surat Thani 1900hrs)

Without my GPS, getting out of Bangkok was hell for me.. I hollanded for a good 1 hours + before deciding that I needed help. I paid a motosai taxi 100B to lead me to the outskirt of Bangkok. No choice as desperate times call for desperate measures.

Stopped at Cha’Am for lunch and other hiccup. A part of my rear box bracket had came loose and fallen off due to the massive vibrations and portholes during the journey. So I had to improvise and screwed the damn thing down and secure the bungee cord just in case the box falls off. LOL. Just praying it holds up till I get home..

Stopped at Bang Saphan Noi to DIY change EO and tighten my bike chain.

I had to ride the last 50km in the dark as I wasted nearly 2 hours to get my arse out of Bangkok. Stayed at Tapee Hotel. 450B. And had another thai massage to sooth my tired body and soul.

Disaster struck again as I left my iphone at the lan shop.. =( too damn tired already...

Luckily I was the last customer, so there was still hope. That night i couldn't sleep properly as i was 'worried' for my phone.

Day 10 (Surat Thani 0900hr – Hatyai 1600hrs)

The next morning, I scurried back to the LAN shop and managed to get my iphone back. Damn I really like the honesty of the Thai people. =)

Rode southwards to army equipment store at Phattalung but didn’t manage to find and ‘goodies’ there. They just sold 4 plastic ammo boxes to some Malaysian dudes 1 week ago… Damn.. OMG..

I had to turn into Hatyai for the night as I was feeling freaking insecure for the past 10 days.. Really needed to recharge some emotional stability and visit some friends in order to remain sane... Damned, it really feels like home to me. =) felt safe and secure here.

Actually, I was supposed to meet kmax in Hatyai before he too embarked on his very own successful expedition. But Alas, my phone was dead and I missed his call. My bad. But anyways HE MADE IT TOO!!! 3 cheers for him....

Day 11 (Hatyai 0700hrs – GP Esso 2000hrs)

Boring ride home on the NSHW. But HEYY.. I made it home safely. During this trip, I really learnt to appreciate the simpler things in life, respect others, their culture and way of life. Really an eye opener for me.

I really love my little nighthawk for his strength and endurance, he never gave up on me even though I put him through such a gruesome ride.. Still fires up with great enthusiasm and sounds like a sewing machine. Maybe one day when I'm out of a job, I'll add a side car to him and we can go sell ice-cream or roti prata together.. Till that day, who knows I may become a ice-cream man tourer..

Ya lor. I already say its written from a very personal point of view and may not suit the tastes of everyone.

The combination of focus, determination, emptiness and being 100% reliant on your instincts is something that can't be taught in riding school or from peers.

Hope you re-lived some of your memories. (Esp the route from Mae Sot to Mae Sariang)

I really learnt alot during this trip. Thanks for being there for me. =)

Problems arise from advancement of technology - it causes unnecessary misunderstanding among us humans.
