have emailed Spraymax Germany for SG dealer, but they did not reply it seems currently there are no importer for this product range in SG. Probably the market for DIY in SG is small as mostly just send to paint shop to do.

I have found this Brand Rust O Leum sold in local DIY store but they do not sell y2K clear top coat which is reilent to petrol like spraymax.

I will be spray paint my front mud guard with rustoleum high gloss black and clear coat. Will try to wax after its fully cured to see how strong the rustoleum stands up to fuel resistant test. As I have read some forums having positive result on Rustoleum clear coat.

spray ourself will also be as shiny?

of course if u do it properly.

But normal spray can paint/clearcoat not durable when used on bikes.

I don't understand what the filler is for. I thought that the primer also works as the filler?

The normal spray can wont last i.e Nippon, RJ, Bosny etcbecause the paint is too soft but the spraymax will. I will be trying Rustoleum, its a rust paint, since spraymax is not available locally, it cost $25 per spray can, the clear coat is slightly cheaper at $10. Once the paint is fully cure its hard and resist chipping, but not sure how tough it stands against fuel.

I thought filler is used for filling up areas that are badly dented etc. Then sand down. Prime. Paint. Coat. No?

the purpose of primer..

as the name implies...it prepares the surfaces for painting..different primers for different surfaces..ie plastic, alu , steel even concrete surace..so that the paint can adhere to..

filler..to fill voids..small to big,,,and sanded to smooth...

some do bypass the filler stage..

primer not only allow the paint to "stick" to the surface better,

primer also shows all the imperfections you have, small holes and chips..

fill it up with putty and sand.. then primer again..

repeat until there's no holes and uneven surfaces..

the colour of the primer will also affect the outcome of the top coat..

i.e. i'll use pink primer for my red fairings, white primer for my light coloured plastics, grey primer for black surfaces..

Posted

Then how come in the diagram the primer comes before the filler? Shouldn't you "fill up" the imperfections before you prime the surface for painting?

primer is always the first coat...this nis to make sure that the base material afer priming is suitable to the later coats..eg plastic ..u should not paint it unless a plastic primer is the first coat or else the paint will not stick properly..

So what primer are u using? My mudguards are chrome, worried that the normal primer wouldn't work. I had good results with RJ primer in the past but not on chrome. Can u share which DIY shop u bought the paint from?

The shop is a self Fixed DIY shop in Tiong Bahru Plaza, Level 3. The Rustoleum is in spray can form, fast dry and universal meaning it can stick well on metal, plastic, the spray nozzle is also different from the normal one commonly sold, can be spray at any angle.

It seems the Rustoleum clear coat is not chemical resistant, probably wont be able to withstand petrol then.

Oh no, the walls on my sidecar are made from galvanised steel.

If all else fails we could just DIY spray the entire bike and let the paint shop finish the tank with 2K clear.

Yup, thanks to your information. Read that Rust Oleum is one of the better paints for automotive purposes. Gonna head down to get some in preparation for my own automotive project.

Hmm, 2k clear coats are more for usage with proper equipments (i.e spray guns, etc). Perhaps, sending the tank for spraying might be a wise idea. Though, I'm not inclined to do so. Perhaps, gonna order SprayMax's clear coat instead...

The Rustoleum spray nozzle is damm difficult to spray, the paint will drip before the spray mist. The paint need to let dry for 1 hour before can hand touch and fully cure in 24 hrs for sanding.

$25 per can is to ex if u ask me. been using anchor spray paints at $6 to diy n all is fine. tried other brands like rj london and even expensive ones like krylon but nthing can compare to anchors finish n drying time. most shop even use anchor aerosol spray cans to do their color coat. then use machine 2k clear over it.

Any shops you know that has a good colour range for Anchor spray? I've always liked RJ/Bosny?Redfox(all same but Redfox cheapest-$2 at Ubi), might give Anchor a try for this project

fyi. if ur planning to clear coat ur project buy 'MC clear' rather than 'normal clear'. give u a better gloss finish, so less afterclear buffing work :thumb:
