by hunt do they eat them? usually a well-fed cat will never deliberately hunt anything, they're playful by nature, usually tapping on smaller creatures and playing around with them.

Some cats hunt but do not necessary eat their prey. They just want to play with their prey. Whether or not the prey survives the ordeal is another question.

My cat usually leaves bits and pieces of lizards and cockroaches around the house.

they might be scared of it at first, however seeing it does not move, sonner or later it'll be torn to pieces, lol.

Accident can happen anytime, anywhere.

However ask yourself, do you want to fall at 120km/h or 60km/h?

hunting...playing ? they are a part of the cats world, especially the kittens..

quote from wiki..

Domestic cats, especially young kittens, are known for their love of play. This behavior mimics hunting and is important in helping kittens learn to stalk, capture, and kill prey. Cats will also engage in play fighting, with each other and with humans. This behavior may be a way for cats to practice the skills needed for real combat, and might also reduce any fear they associate with launching attacks on other animals.

Owing to the close similarity between play and hunting, cats prefer to play with objects that resemble prey, such as small furry toys that move rapidly, but rapidly lose interest (they become habituated) in a toy they have played with beforeCats also tend to play with toys more when they are hungry.[14 String is often used as a toy, but if it is eaten it can become caught at the base of the cat’s tongue and then move into the intestines, a medical emergency which can cause serious illness and death. Owing to the risks posed by cats eating string, it is sometimes replaced with a laser pointer's dot, which cats may chase. While concerns have been raised about the safety of these lasers, Professor John Marshall, an ophthalmologist at St Thomas' Hospital, has stated that it would be "virtually impossible" to blind a cat with a laser pointer.[

i still have to disagree with ur disagree, hehe

cats have an impact on rats population and it really is a fact. the reason u dont see many rats around is if there's a cat population there. rats breed very fast n in mass quantity. and they usually works in packs. some rats are big, but no bigger than a kitten, those cats that really hunt are adult cats.

given an environment where a dosmetic cat is set free, it will use it's instincts to hunt rats if no other available source of food is around. thus dont feed them is a sure way to force them to do their job. the reason why most hang around hawker center/food stall is due to the fact there's free food. if ppl dont feed them and owners clean up fast, they will have to hunt.

the fact that u dont see cats in action is due to the fact rats mostly come out at night, where there's fewer activities. ever seen a rubbish bin at night crawling with rats? i've seen a few times cats in action; they ran n tried to chase down something, however since it's dark, i couldn't make out what it's chasing. also i've ever seen a hungry cat eating a roach. thus if u've never seen 1 in action, means u never hang out too much at night.

i'm gonna agree with Demon and disagree with you..

My area had dozens of stray cats running around..

i dun feed them but i played with them..

The rat infestation in my area is bad.. Squeaks can be heard at nights even i'm staying at level 6..

the cats simply do nothing when the rats came out running at night..

cats dun hunt rats/roaches, they have the instinct to chase down little objects that's all..

as a thinking cat, wouldnt it be easier to wait for food or find food at the rubbish dump instead of waiting for a rat to come out from the hole and chasing it around, not knowing that if you could have it for lunch?(Tom and Jerry style)?

if still cant convince you, i had 4 cats at home living with my hamster..

they played with the hamster, nom it around the room giving it thrill rides.. but never once tried to eat it..

simply put, the place where u stated has food laying around where cats simply dont have to hunt. in an urban area like SG where every few blk has a coffee shop/hawker center, most cats in SG will not hunt.

however i'm disagreeing on the fact that cats dont hunt by nature is not true, given an environment where they're not fed and no food laying around, they have to hunt, not necessary mice, but birds and other smaller creatures also. they're meat eaters.

hunting & playing are two different behaviour. when they're full, they only play around, eg mimics hunting. i've ever seen a cat eating roach, not being playful, but out of hunger. n i've seen cats playing with worms, etc. it's really hard to describe a hunt and play, u'll have to see it for urself.

i rem years ago, there was a talk about removing all cats from estates, cos in some area cats are really annoying. the reply given, if cats were removed, rats will roam. the best way for cats to do its job is not to feed them, and keep our rubbish in their proper places. u can talk to ur MP if u have the chance and they might tell u the same thing. it's not always like tom & jerry kind of thing but it's a true fact.

I did witness real time, an adult male cat ambushing 2 rats the size of my palm... and the rats were like screaming for help... quite saddening to witness, the cat just pawed the rat whichever tried to make a break thru... mind you. The rats were not slow but the cat is FAST!. In the end, the cat just clawed one to death and pick the other one half dead and walk proudly away...

simply said, bigger animals will eat smaller animals. in urban area like SG we seldom see any of these animals in actions and even if they eat, they will hide in a corner, scared of humans snatching their food.

only humans eat everything.

there's animal channel on okto.
