OLD NEWS BUT INTERESTING.

http://www.bmwmotorrad.co.za/bikes/pics/r1150sm_main.jpghttp://www.bmwmotorrad.co.za/bikes/pics/r1150sm_small.jpg

By the BMW Motorrad Editor

Source: Motor Cycle News (MCN)

A new "supermoto", based on a limited edition R1150GS, just might become a mass produced model.

The R1150 "SM", reportedly made for Pia Motors, one of Germany's biggest BMW dealers, have the people from Munich very excited, says Motor Cycle News (MCN). Insiders claim the production of the 20 special GS's for Pia, at 12 340 (about R202 500) a piece, tickled BMW's fancy, causing them to contemplate mass-producing it.

The limited edition GS is definitely not "limited" in looks (see pictures).

On the SM the already impressive handling of the R1150GS is further enhanced by a set of wide, 17 inch BBS "Phoenix" solid wheels, which is used to mount sticky tires. The entire rear swingarm, together with the front Telever arm, have been replaced with the unit from a road-focused R1150R, while a gold hlins unit has replaced the rear shock.

The R1150 "SM" has a set of extra-wide Renthal motocross bars, a one-off exhaust system, K&N air filters and an injection remap. Pia claims that the SM makes 93bhp at the back wheel. The weight of the SM has been cut by 5% to 236kg fully fuelled by removing heavy equipment, such as a pillion seat and ABS equipment.

What BMW Motorrad says:

The question is whether there is any sense in mass-producing the SM. Since the SM is a sport bike, a niche market that BMW has already covered with the R1100S Sport, we think it unlikely that BMW will toss another model into this market.

If one takes the GS's spectacular performance against so-called super bikes into consideration, however, there is definitely scope for mass-production of the special edition GS.

The GS performed exceptionally well against Japanese sport bikes during a road test by the authoritative German motorcycle magazine Motorrad. Published last year, the road test involved point-to-point dashes between four Japanese bikes and the R1150GS in the Alpine passes. If you think the GS was a funny choice by the magazine, you'll be surprised: in every one of the tests the GS outperformed the Japanese bikes with ease. The GS's height and impressive torque adds to the bike's amazing handling around corners.

Buyers will probably cue up for this sexy, lightweight version of the GS. We, however, think BMW will unfortunately not opt to mass-produce the SM. But we're looking forward to the Germans' decision.

I don't know what they are talking about, perhaps CYCLOP can help :

BMW K 100 RS

Pan Racing by BMW, deserto d'autore

Cuore tedesco, anima italiana, lavorazione a mano. Entro fine anno sarà in vendita una versione clienti. Prezzo indicativo, 50 mila euro iva esclusa.
