brothers on boxer engines, i want to share with you an incident that happened with another bro on the GS1200.

he lost control of his machine cos he hit the clutch instead of the front brakes and almost hit onto the lorry infront of him. the cylinder head was torn apart like a durian.

the rider is fine and out of the hospital and resting at home now, the GS however, is a total loss. Luckily the cylinder head took the impact and saved his leg.

he must have panic to clutch in on a turn...heard is on the trip to penang

Old GS will range from $6k onwards. Expect high mileage and initial sorting out, but once done, likely to be reliable. Major things to watch out are final drive play, clutch replacement and hall sensor. Once these are done, long term reliability. Cheaper and more satisfying if you learn to work on the bike, which is not too difficult.

Cheers

Everyone says BMW bikes are expensive to maintain... can bros give an indicative price for the GSA

Cost of eg-

1. 10k oil / filter / spark plug change...

2. Tire change (assume original tires)

3. Suspension replacement

4. Brake pads

5. Major servicing like 100k what kind of change? timing belt etc?

Would really like to understand how much it cost just to keep a bike for the occasional touring purpose and local riding.

Posted

10k is around $350 - $400 at PML, cheaper if you do it at local bike shop

tire change any local bike shop can do, PMl charge is $480 for exp tourance

suspension front and rear aftermarket, the few brands that i survey on - wilbers $2100, biturbo $2400, ohlins $2600

the rest i cant answer you cost my bike just cross the 10K km mark, basically normal servicing maybe about $100 more than japanese bike, but japanese bike nowadays not cheap to maintain also

Hi, anyone with good recommendation on who and where I can go to to safely install the flashing (red/blue) LED flashers on the front of my 1200GS - that won't affect my CANBUS electrics? Guess same person can install the driving and fog light (one on each side) on my GS tank crash bars, right? Was thinking of Hella but am open to any recommendations on better and brighter Driving and Fog lights. Thanks in advance for your good advice!
