Hey guys,

I was at BMW Motorrad Singapore on Saturday and looking at the GS series in real life have pretty much got my mind set on the GS1200 for touring. Initially, I thought the GS 1200 was too big for me until I saw this lady at Motorrad riding off on her's. Haha. I'll try to learn more about these beauties from you guys. Cheers ;)

Hi, may I know which bike cover size should I use for the R1150RT with all 3 boxes? Also anybody has a soft copy of the user manual and/or service manual? Thanks for the assistance :)

I myself use 5XL cover and still does not fit for properly.

for service manual. this is tricky.

go to BMW Motorrad Denmark at BMW Motorrad Denmark. Click the service tab and click "Downloade manualer" that will bring u the the manual site.

Hi guys, got a few questions to seek your opinions.

Firstly, this is the colour of my R1100RT.

05122010830.jpg

I simply love the colour BLACK, and am contemplating respraying my ride to black. The current colour is original, and the bike is accident-free.

Now my questions are :

1. Any reason why I SHOULD NOT change the ORIGINAL colour?

2. Which spray painter specialises in BMW bikes?

3. How much might it cost?

4. How long will it take?

5. Do I ride my bike there, spray painter remove parts for respray, and put back fairings afer that and I collect my bike?

6. Can I get a replacement of the BMW emblem and sticker, or will the spray painter source for me/re-cycle current ones?

7. Where can I get replacement emblem, one of them is scratched...

Appreciate opinions/comments as detailed as possible, cos I couldn't find info on spray painters who specialises in BMW bikes...

Wow, is there anything larger than 5L? Online only has 1200 manuals. Reading through one of them first to get some basic info first. Thanks for the assistance :)

Now my questions are :

1. Any reason why I SHOULD NOT change the ORIGINAL colour?

The BMW paint is of good quality, to me that is a reason. When you repaint a buyer may be suspicious why there was a re-spray, was it an accident? Look into what black you want, and whether it is a BMW paint code. BMW has like 5 to 6 paint codes for black.

2. Which spray painter specialises in BMW bikes?

None that I know if, perhaps PML can arrange for theirs (I believe that they outsource anyway), but as with most things, prep, patience and skill of the craftsman are important. Good spray painters are worth their weight in gold.

3. How much might it cost?

Ask around, I reckon easy $600 upwards. It is not just the painting, but the prep-work. The surfaces have to be sanded, cleaned, repaired if necessary, primed, painted and then sealed. I once had to remove old paint from a set of fairing and then prep the entire fairing because the previous repainting was poor. Total bill was $1,600. No need to go to a painter specialising in bikes, except for the fairing removal part. Another way is to remove the fairing yourself / at a mech, then bring to the painter; might be cheaper, but the advantage is that you can be more careful than the painter .

4. How long will it take?

Usually depends on painter's workload. Fastest I had was 3 days, longest a year. Yup, a year.

5. Do I ride my bike there, spray painter remove parts for respray, and put back fairings afer that and I collect my bike?

Bike-painting shop usually can do it, but the RT has fairing all round. Not difficult to remove, but tedious. I'll rather remove / install the fairing myself, but that is just me. Also need not leave your bike there if you do this.

6. Can I get a replacement of the BMW emblem and sticker, or will the spray painter source for me/re-cycle current ones?

Can get direct replacements from BMW. Plastic emblems can be reused with new double-sided tape, stickers have to be new, as the old ones are likely to be damaged upon removal or are yellowed.

7. Where can I get replacement emblem, one of them is scratched...

See above

Appreciate opinions/comments as detailed as possible, cos I couldn't find info on spray painters who specialises in BMW bikes...

As I've said, there are none.

... what you looking at? Never seen a cow that wants to go places ????! ...

if there was a spray painter that specialised in just BMW bikes, he would have closed shop anyway, how many BMW riders actually spray off their bikes original colors unless really required

@coolcat : Thank you for the detailed answers. Do you have any good painters to recommend, based on your experience?

@maxxmadness : Exactly. I was imagining since PML also does repairs, they should have a dedicated outsourced painter who will not tarnish their reputation. If only we can locate this painter that PML uses, we should be able to get "PML quality" paintwork, don't you think?

The good one that I used is the one that made me wait a year. It is a car painter that did me a favour. If you want a look at the workmanship let's meet up.

Replica is well known for doing bikes but I have never used them.

Why don't you get a quote from PML first? For all you know they may be reasonable in price and you get some sort of assurance. I am cheapo, that is why I never went to them for paintjob :)

Where is this Replica located?

Don't say we are cheapo, we are just people who want the most out of our hard-earned money, people who refused to be carrots...

Can't seem to locate the latest price list from BMW site, anyone knows the latest OTR price for F800GS (excluding COE and Insurance)?

Tried to do a search but didn't get much returns on the maintenance cost. Say the first few run in EO change, how much would it cost? and subsequent regular servicing cost?

Lastly, understand the lowest seat height is about 33.4 in. Can the rear shock be adjusted to lower the height a little more? I think I more confident to handle if it's around 31-32in.

hi, im riding a 05 gs1200..

one of the front signal lights has been broken off n dangling by its wires, and the other is pretty fragile, awaiting its turn.

the carpark at my place is pretty crowded and i guess inconsiderate people have been knocking into my signal lights (intentionally or not, i will never know) when they get off their own bikes.

anyway i've been riding with the bike looking like a one-armed bandit for 2 wks..

are there any replacement signal lights i can get? not so expensive aftermarket ones of course..

any recommendations?

thanks in advance!!

is usually a direct replacement of the whole fairing or component..in the case of the fairing, it would have come factory sprayed

Hi.. Sorry, im still new to the ride itself. So do correct me if im wrong ya.

Bro when u say "broken off" does it really mean it broke where the rubber casing literally torn off or its just out in 1 piece? Of cos with wires out definitely.

I had experience mine when i had a slow stupid fall while stationary cos i lost my footing. Same thing did happen where my right signal light came off with dangling wires. Lucky tats the only thing tat came off.

Push it back up and examine the signal casing. Its actually a snap on to the body where u will need to loosen 2 screws at the sides and just plug it back in. Gd as new.

Hope urs is the same case as mine.

Replacement i believe m-tech do have the oem signals. Price wise im not tat sure but it shd be alright cos its a normal halogen design. Tried to change all 4 signals of mine to the current gs led model. I find $400 way tooooo ex for signal lights. So i forgo the idea. Im riding an 08 model btw.

haha unfortunately my case is such that the rubber joint broke into 2.. the rubber casing was already a little cracked n crumbly due to age n exposure to sun..

so i wont be able to snap it back on anymore..

jesus! $400 for a set of signal lights?!?! omg.

Hi guys, I need some help here.

Am riding a GS1100.

Started my bike today, rode off as normal. Engine died when I was on the expressway. (gradually manner).

I started the bike again, rode off for some distance, and the same problem arises.

Was caught in a drizzle 2 days back though. ;(

Could it have been:

(i) the sensor

(ii) plugs

(iii) other electronics

Appreciate some helpful bros enlightenment.

Not sure of GS1100, but I have ever experience the same thing with a sports bike years ago. When rpm starts dropping, no matter how you twist the throttle, the power keeps going down, and you need to filter quickly to the shoulder. After that, I was not able to start the bike immediately, only after about 15 minutes was I able to start the bike, but same thing happens after a while.

My problem was a faulty fuel pump.
