Hi all,

I'm looking at buying a Honda NSR150 pretty soon, but want a bit more info on maintenance and engine refitting in general. I have used the search feature on this site, but got only a few hits for the specifics I want, so all help anyone can provide will be greatly appreciated. I'm thinking of an NSR because I want a bike with more oomph, and I'll only be in S'pore for a few years so don't want to wait to upgrade my license (but I'll probably do it while I'm here).

Are there any recommended service centres that specialise in NSR's?

What engine refitting options are out there, and how much (roughly) do they cost?

I know you can re-sleeve and so on, but is there the possibility that the engine can't be restored?

How many km's should I get before needing top end re-fit, and full re-fit?

Does anyone know of any common problems NSR's have (appart from front end float at high speeds)?

Any info anyone can give will be appreciated. I'm really trying to find out how much extra (on top of purchase price) the bike's likely to cost me, as I know I'll need to overhaul the engine at least once while I have it. I also want to find a good and reliable service centre with NSR experience.

Thanks in advance, and I hope to join the NSR rides soon...

Hi sir, A top overhaul or so u mention can be done at most reputable bike shops. A top overhaul would cost you around 200sgd. What they do is change the piston and hone the cylinder.

I have never heard of cylinder resleeving in singapore being done. There has been those who export out their cylinders overseas to get it done. If the cylinder is bad enough, Usually we just get the whole block replaced. A full overhaul can set you back about 400-600sgd depending on shop.

If you want to get a bike, do check on the COE(Certificate of entitlement), when it expires. What i know is alot of NSRs now, their COEs are going to expire, or have already been renewed. Those dying ones, you have to fork out an additional around 2500sgd (price now) for it to be road legal again.

Singapore is a funny place. Do read up on legal issues before getting one. Being informed is better than being in the dark. Info can be obtained at http://www.onemotoring.com.sg

Hope this helps. U can also PM me any further queries.

bro i think u read too much.. just go get it and let experience teach you.. (some lesson are expensive tho~) hahaha.. hmm last time i got a used block for 50 bucks from this forum.

for me problem for sp is the lousy brakes, lousy rear suspension, wimpy carburator and the single arm.

the single arm are heavy and the chain adjusters get ****ed over time due to adjusting without proper tool.

Sounds like you need to move up to a grade 2 bike.

You're probably right about reading too much, but I am going to but one and want the least hassle and expense possible.

no way bro for me my 250cc is already too fast for sg roads..

the small2 things on a small bike like brakes suspesion, ect can be changed to make it better bike.. doesnt necessarily need to change bike, just the parts.

Most bike shops are able to do it. I'd go to Ah Beng at BikeworkZ down at Kaki Bukit. Reputable guy with massive knowledge about bikes and how good/****ed up jobs are done here.

What engine refitting options are out there, and how much (roughly) do they cost?

$300+ for a top end rebuild. New block, piston and piston rings.

I know you can re-sleeve and so on, but is there the possibility that the engine can't be restored?

Don't bother getting it done here. I found out that what they do is simply take a pipe and force it down into the engine block. When your engine runs and it heats up, it naturally expands. And because it was never made to withstand high temperatures with minimal expansion, you're going to get a seized piston. All I can say is "pray" when that happens. If you want to replate the engine, send it out of the country and get it done properly with nikasil.

How many km's should I get before needing top end re-fit, and full re-fit?

Depends on the block and piston.

Does anyone know of any common problems NSR's have (appart from front end float at high speeds)?

Poor forks and rear shocks. Poor front and rear brakes. Tends to slide due to the poor suspension, not enough to make you crash but you can feel it slide. Wobbly and it can't hold lines through corners very well (This is my opinion of the handling anyway, I've had one under my care for a few months.).

Any info anyone can give will be appreciated.
