Burning smell

I encounter a slight burning smell from my bike while riding! What is the likely problem brewing? Visual inspection cant find anything wrong?

Sorry friend, I can't smell anything from behind my phone.

 

What's burning? Your nose should be able to tell.

 

If it smells sweet, it might be a coolant leak burning up burning up somewhere.

 

If it smells like burning hair, you have a burnt wire or electrical somewhere.

 

If it smells like burning oil, you might have a damaged engine.

What was the last thing you did before this happened? The last time this happened to me, it was the sole of my cheapo shoes burning on the pipes, it melted and left a layer on the pipes and everytime the pipes got hot it would let out the smell.

 

Do you know where the smell is coming from? Where is it strongest? You could also remove the tank and see if any of the insulation on the cables (clutch especially) or hoses are touching the engine and melting.

 

And get someone to rev your engine hard after it's warmed up, stand behind the pipes and see if any smoke (blue or white) is coming out of the pipes.

Thanks, smells like burning hair i guess. Could worn clutch emit that kind of smell? My bike 9 years already.

Is the clutch lubricated by engine oil? I just change engine oil, the smell seems to be gettin lesser. Maybe it takes time for the oil to lub it initially? I experience no clutch slippage leh.

Depends on whether your bike is wet clutch or dry clutch.

If it's wet clutch which most bikes are, you will not be able to smell the burns of the clutch plates since they are submerged in the engine oil. Even for dry clutch, you can only smell the burnings after stressing the clutch for a prolonged period such as driving uphill to genting highlands

Dam, so its not my wet clutch. Goto do visual inspection again, worried if its my alternator burning?

Have you considered that maybe there is some oil spilt onto your bellypan burning up? Have a visual inspection all over your bike, including underneath.
