Not long ago, I bought a 2nd hand cb 400 spec 1.

Nov 2010- I changed my front brake discs x 2 because the mechanic claims the surface wasn't smooth anymore ( y-y). After paying and changing, I realized there was a suddenly shaky sound from the brake discs. I ignored it.

Earlier this year, I couldn't stand the sound anymore, so I went back to the mechanics, he said the hub on the brake disc was loose. Manufacturer defect He asked me to change again and, i topped up more $$$. He says the new one is a better brand, better quality.

After I changed to this new brake discs, everytime when I brake (front) there is a loud screeching sound. The braking screeching sound only happens when the bike is at low speed. I remembered this sound was the same screeching sound as the KFC delivery boy as he braked his wave bike.

I am unsure whats causing the sound.

As u noe, brake disc is new the second time.

Caliper has been opened and cleaned (lotsa black dirt)- it opens and close as it should to when pressing the brake lever.

O rings has been changed.

Brake pad has been changed (new)

Now mechanic said need to change the piston.

Does anyone feel the mechanic is correct in his diagnosis? Or am I being bled dry here? Has anyone encounter this brake screeching noise and successfully resolve it? Or should I just go to malaysia and change the whole thing, I am being bled dry here.

To make it worse, when the mechanic was tightening the screw of the right brake disc onto the wheel, one of the screw broke into half. Half is "stuck" inside the lobang in the wheel, the other is broken out, apparently, he forced turned too much till broken.

Just to highlight, this screeching braking sound only happened after the brake disc was changed the second time. Does anyone think its the brake disc problem ? not other parts?

Posted

hey! i also have screeching sound! but mine is rear.. and i can see the rear brake disc is "eaten in" already. i have brand new brake pads and the sound is less but still exists.. do u think changing the brake disc will eliminate the sound?

My post probably doesn't help u but....

Wondering if it's common issue with Honda bikes?

Happened to my previous bike.

Did necessary fixes by renowned bike repair shop. (No mention cos dun want to spoil any name)

Problem still there.

After every ride brake disc is hot as if constantly rubbing with the brake pad.

Gave up and got rid of the bike.

If u dun hear the sound at higher speed dun mean dun have. Just that u can't hear.

Pluvius. If it happens during braking, i think Its the pad.

You would want to get a second opinion from another mechanic.

pls do not spray oil base thing on brake pad, ur brake pad will totally lose effect, brake pad will absorb the oil and it will equal to no braking effort at all

Spray a bit of lubricant at the brake pad?

Just for correction, Use a contact cleaner or brake disc cleaner to remove excess brake dust for more efficient braking.

pls do not spray oil base thing on brake pad, ur brake pad will totally lose effect, brake pad will absorb the oil and it will equal to no braking effort at all

The brake pads will have no friction due to the oily surface.

Thanks all for opinions.

Brake pad wise- I changed new already loh on both sides leow. After change still have the same sound. So shouldnt be pad problem since brand new still have sound.

I think I have a logical answer liao to this.

May I ask fastandfurious and LTC, when push the bike or very low speed move off, also have the sound? This will check whether my guess is correct.

May i ask fast and furious, your brake disc feel hot also?

Once again, thank you for your opinions.

P/S: Seriously, i thought of oiling actually but I felt the same, skali cannot brake die la...

@Pluvius I think your brake caliper a bit jam. my mechanic told me my rear caliper inside the rubber very hard. meaning even if u let go the brake, it will still be stuck there for a while. hai.. got time and $ i'll service my rear brake caliper and change brake disc. i cannot tahan the screeching sound. not a lot but still irritating.

btw dont spray lube on the pad! last time i wash bike then spray some wd40 on the dics, already siao liao. few days braking no good. lol!

If you had described everything in your first post accurately, my advice is don't go back to that mechanic.

Do you know the brand ?

Ok...most probably its the gap in between the disc and the pad then, that's the central issue. Thats why feel so hot and got sound..

@ fast and furious careful if u wanna change brake disc. Different disc from different manufacturer different size, design, number of screws and of course the width. If the width is wider, the gap in between the disc and pad is very small or nothing, then its like forever rubbing the disc. Caliper wise, sometimes more worth it to change new set, again, take note of the dimension. Wait become like my case, change O ring, still want to change piston. But lets say u service the caliper, it functions as normal, but skali you change disc, the disc dimension so wide, everytime rubbing the pad also no point.

I think this should be the problem we are facing...the gap in between is too small. Stock assembly dont have this cos everything measure out properly liao.

Yeah man, this mechanic like very bad la...Brand wise i forgot liao. i throw the wrapper away.

better avoid this mechanic after this episode.

Now all i think i have to do, is to widen the gap in between pad and disc.

thanks all.

This part is not adjustable, unless your grind the pad surface to reduce the thickness.

Either the pad or/and the rotors (since you mentioned that there were changed) are not of factory specs. Having said that, it is normal to have slight contact between the one side of the pad and the rotor as that is exactly how floating caliper disc brake works

There are alot of cheap aftermarket rotors from China, and the specs off even they are designed for a specific model.

Screeching sound at low speeds is normal. Many cars and bikes do that.

One of the contributions to the noise is actually the brake pad itself. Depending on the compound of the brake pad, especially some high performance brake pads, will give out screeching sounds.

Another possible reason is that the brake pad has worn too thin. But if your pads are new then that's definately not the case.

The sound is common for Honda bikes.. Try go to Unique and service all your calipers.. Might be the pistons problem.. After you service the calipers, change to a better quality brake pad.. The sound will be gone.. Servicing will include flushing of your brakes, change o-rings, and i cant remember what else.. See if it works..

Why go to workshop when DIY is easy..?

Posted (edited)

Try this if you have the tools to DIY. Raised up your front wheel with a jack, and spin the wheel forward and reverse check if the wheel is turning smoothly.

If its not smooth possibility

1. Your brake pistons is not extended out evenly, remove caliper and brake pads and push in all the piston with a G-clamp so that the pads are not in contact with your brake disc. Then put back the pads and install the calipers. Compress your brake lever slightly to extend the piston bit by bit until the brake lever feels firm again. As most mechanic do not know this technique and they want to be fast after installing new pads, if its press too hard some piston will extend more causing the pads to misalighn thus causiing the pads to contact with the brake disc at the neutral position result will be uneven disc wear, screeching sound and poor FC.

Im also facing the same screeching irritating sound at low speeds on my front brakes of my Spec3. i had dis prob only after i changed my new brake pads about 1month plus ago. The mechanic told me that the brakepads need to be seasoned after a few days of riding. Now i dun feel like going back to his workshop. Any other trusted workshop can recommend to do the brake servicing of the calipers, etc.?

I wonder if wheel bearing could contribute to this problem? Rotating shaft can't "kept" in place.... or rotating shaft not straight?

Is the disc n caliper properly installed?

According the this webby. Screeching brake are normal. vibration is the cause. Harder pads also noisier.

I too have squealing brakes. Spraying brake cleaner didnt resolve the issue.

I jammed the brake hard a few time and the sound went away. But came back quite fast. Read the solution is to add a piece of thin sheet metal to tighten the pads and absorb the vibes.
