i had a guy who called me at 2am in the morning, some years ago, and sought advice for a career move.

reason of him moving: can't work along with his boss.

will you recruit such ppl??

i told him nicely to sort thing out with his superior and leave on a positive note. and oso told him that call at such early hour was not appreciated.

hope he is doing fine now.

the moral of the story: job advertisement on "we recruit ppl who can't work with their bosses..." hard to come by. and "we need ppl to call at the inconvenience of our customers..." haven seen one yet.

let's keep our fingers crossed and look out for the recruit page this saturday.

Well, for one he's honest. But on the surface, I don't think I will recruit him either.

Hi Bro,

Long time no see. Have been away for the forum for quite some time. Should have come in as during the last 8 months, I've recruited for my company 4 WSHC in April, dismissed 1 WSHC in June, recruited 1 to replace, and recruited another 4 WSHC last month.

Anyway for those looking for jobs, my advise is to get recommendations into Consultant companies especially if you got no experience, be it WSHS, WSHC or WSHO. Consultant companies are a good stepping stone as some of them have "tie ups" with established companies so putting you in a job, even without experience will be easier.

When I first got registered as a WSHO in August 2009, Bro Welly recommended me into the consultant company he was working with. I was put into Japanese Company LTA & URA's Civil Engineering project eventhough I come from Oil & Gas Industry when I was a WSHC.

In September 2010, I left and joined a MNC as the Project EHS Manager for a Building construction project eventhough I have never done any building works before.

I'm now in the process of completing the administration for a job offer of an Assistant HSE Manager in Qatar eventhough I have no Marine Industry experience.

So I have this firm believe that it all depends on you on how confident you are when you go for that interview and able to convince the interviewer of your abilities.

Imagine with no Civil Engineering experience, just got the registered WSHO, I can go into the LTA project bearing in mind of their strict requirements.

So guys, believe in yourselves, go for it, and just make sure that you do a good job when you're there.

Hi fellow safety officers,

I want to ask. Is it okay to store compressed gas for cutting (e.g LPG, acetylene) beside diesel tank storage ?

hi munchy,

according to ss510-2005 (CP for Safety in Welding & Cutting), page 18, 9.2.2 Storage: ....gas cylinders shall be stored in a well-protected, well-ventilated, dry location, at least 6m from highly combustible materials such as oil or excelsior....

Hi Guys,

Recently a new course WSQ Specialist Diploma in Occupational Hygiene in SP cost $3049.50 after grant, wish to know is it useful to take up this course and the prospect of having the cert of it? thanks

such course will only make the training centre richer.

which industry did you come from that you need such occupational hygiene diploma course?

the industry which requires such person with such qualification can afford to pay high?

don't take the course blindly.

singaporeans are known for keeping too many useless papers which does not enhance our career or job search.

wat the gahmen needs to do to help is to stop foreign talents from coming in to take away our job opportunity.

beware, paper have no value if there, in the first place, no job opportunity.

Hello everyone,

I have read (yes, read) every sgl pg of this thread, and have registered for the basic wsq cert at ntuc learning hub, starting in april. I'm 30 this year. Finishing up a diploma in biotechnology now. Used to be a regular in SAF packing and checking parachutes (a diff form of safety? Haha), and other misc jobs when i was younger. Intending to pursue a safety career in other industries. I'm a newbie in this area so besides introducing myself and my background, hope to make a few friends and be able to ask for advice too. :)

hey everyone,

i can't remember on which pg it was, but i read that there is some sort of a trainee scheme provided by keppel with a bond of 2 years. I dont recall if there is a mention of "graduate" as a requirement or not, cos i just went to Google, they need at least a degree holder? I was pretty disappointed to find that.

Is it true or I was looking at the wrong thing? Is there something like this for diploma holders too? With bond, sponsor specialist diploma in WSH etc..

Hope someone sees this soon! ^^

P/S: I cant seem to find this on the internet in detail, but what are the differences btw "safety officer" and "ehs officer"

hi whitefang,

welcome to this forum. don't know if you can find good advice here or not. but i thot this kinda of forum only confuse ppl.

but it's a good sharing platform to start with.

especially when you google and the best google can offer is to bring you here.

i oso switched to safety career when i was 30 with 2 young kids in 1993. only a technical diploma holder.

they offered me 1.1k per month as a trainee safety officer. i knew nuts. don't know what safety was, no training, no cert. 1.1k per month with wife not working, i needed to give private tuition at night to supplement my income. i earned more giving tuition.

i took my safety officer training course in 1995, registered as rso in 1997. earned my safety degree in 2001. had the opportunities to work with various mnc companies, now with a local firm as a safety manager.

if you ask me, safety is a great career. i started at the right time, learned from great ppl.

can't tell if the time and situation is still the same today.

as i just offered a new safety officer (with no relevant experience) for 4k per month.

hello mr tay,

cant tell u how surprised and pleased i am to receive some sort of response here. to be honest, i really thought this thread is dead. I have been thinking if i should switch careers and wondering if being 30 yrs old is too late to start. but from your little reply there, i'm happy to know that "there is hope for me". haha.. yes advice here from "people who are involved" will be the best way to go. no fancy terms and languages from professional websites, just english that everyone can understand. it especially works for a "layman in safety" like me.

i am willing to take all u guys' tips and pointers on which direction i should proceed on. i may not be young, but being a greenhorn in this industry, being humble and willing to learn is the best way to improve.

That said, my course in certification in wsq with ntuc is starting in april. decided to do it full time so that i can finish it in a mth, instead of dragging on for 3 mths. after which, they told me i can register for the advance cert in wsq immediately (as soon as there are slots) and continue from there. I intend to do that full time too, back to back. i made this decision as i will be graduating from my diploma in march, and hence, might as well remain unemployed and getting those two certs together first, instead of taking them part time and dragging on for 4-5 mths. is that a good decision so make?

also, when i am done with the advance cert, this means i can start looking for a job as a safety supervisor/co-ordinator, am i right?

so i find a job and then commence on the specialist diploma as a part time course, immediately upon finding a job. and apply for RSO when the 2 years is up.

Job search-wise, i read that its not easy to get one unless there is some sort of recommendation, so its good to submit my cv to consultant and job search companies as well.

this is what i have read, understood and noted down from reading this whole thread. (in fact, i'm reading through it all over again haha) hope i got my facts right. =) i am more interested in marine or oil industry. hope i can expand in this area.

Anyway i have been in this forum for many years already. Just that a search on google regarding this job has brought me back here again. :)
