[For advice] Transfer of registration number from bike still under instalment

Recommended Posts

Posted

Hi guys,

I have read some threads about buying and transferring number plate from one bike to another.

However, I need some advice from someone who has done the above before, ie. buying and transferring a number plate from a bike still under instalment onto your current bike.

Is it possible? And if yes, how? Or is it the same as any other sale/transfer of number plate?

Will greatly appreciate your sharing the experience and how to go about it. I have called LTA, and they arent very forthcoming with such transactions.

Many thanks.

For illustration, pls see the following example:

Person B intends to buy over a number plate from Person A's Bike X to put on B's existing Bike Y. Bike X is currently under installment, but Bike Y isnt.

LTA confirmed the steps for buying/transfer of vehicle registration number are as follows:

a) Not possible for a direct transfer of vehicle registration number from Person A to B.

Instead:

b) Person A will have to transfer ownership of Bike X to Person B at LTA and there will be transfer fee (check onemotoring.com) incurred. Note that Person B will first need to purchase a valid insurance cover for the Bike X and produce the insurance policy as part of the vehicle transfer requirements during the normal transfer process. So, Bike X will belong to Person B technically from now on.

c) Person B will then do a vehicle registration number retention, and pay $1300 if it is to be transferred to an existing Bike Y. The retention fee will be $100 (instead of $1300) if it is to be transferred to a new Bike Z (not relevant here).

d) Once © is done, LTA will assign a new vehicle registration number to the Bike X at no extra charge. ie FOC.

Note: At this point, Bike X will have a new registration number although the insurance bought by Person B is under the original number plate.

e) To complete the sale of the vehicle registration number, Person B will have to transfer the Bike X back to Person A. Once again, there will be a transfer fee (check onemotoring.com) to be paid (should be similar to the fee paid in (b) above, and Person A will need to have a valid insurance cover and the original insurance policy at hand during the transfer process.

This is the tricky part that I have been thinking about. Will the original insurance policy prior to the transfer be valid for this still? The reason why I am asking is because the original insurance policy is for the original number plate, but not for the new registration plate LTA assigned.

Or is there a need to repurchase another policy for the same vehicle for the transfer back?

How should this transfer back part be effected at LTA, ie on the same day as the transfer/retention to the number buyer?

And any implication/complication if Bike X is still currently under instalment?

Is the process described above correct? Is there another way to go about it?

Thanks.

problem:

1) if A & B r strangers, will they trust each other to do the transfer n transfer back?

2) once transfer is done, any insurance/parking will be forfeited, xx% will be lost if any amount needs to claim back. then if once transfer back, insurance/parking will need to reapply again.

3) if bike X is under installment, A will still have to dissolve the installment b4 transfering. so it's still back to square 1.

technically even if u own 2 bike, one of them is under installment, it's still like not possible to swap plate num, cos the bike is still not yours. (correct me if i'm wrong)

Accident can happen anytime, anywhere.

However ask yourself, do you want to fall at 120km/h or 60km/h?

2) once transfer is done, any insurance/parking will be forfeited, xx% will be lost if any amount needs to claim back. then if once transfer back, insurance/parking will need to reapply again.

3) if bike X is under installment, A will still have to dissolve the installment b4 transfering. so it's still back to square 1.

technically even if u own 2 bike, one of them is under installment, it's still like not possible to swap plate num, cos the bike is still not yours. (correct me if i'm wrong)

Just as i feared. Thanks.

reposting for anyone who had done it to advise on.

Thanks.

I had just retained a number plate at LTA.. Here's some info when I did the transfer..

You dun need to buy the insurance of bike X if you are retaining the number plate only..

Means you need to tell the LTA officer that you just transferring to retain under your name, then will be transferring back again..

You only pay $1300 (plus whatever amount you agree to pay Person A for) as Person B as you wanted his number.. Bike X will get a new number immediately if nothing is told to the LTA officer, eg person A got a new plate/ an old plate to replace the transferred one..

Then person A will need to call up the insurance about the issue..

Engine and chassis number stays the same even when the plate had been changed, no issue to that..

Most insurance companies will just change the number plate to the new one for no fees..

NCD will be the same for person A..

The effect of the transfer process is immediate..

Your problem is that bike X is currently under installment, you cant just transfer like that..

But then again, you can try to do it at LTA since bike X is under person B namebut under installment..

Another issue will be new plates that are transferred to both bikes X and Y, ESP for bike X as you dunno what number you getting.. Once transfer took effect, bikes X and Y parking outside LTA is a changed identity.. New plates will be needed.. Either you prepare before hand work ride straight away to change it.. It's ok, any traffic offenses after the transfer time will be following the new owner of the plate..
