Hi all! I'm currently riding a V-Strom 650 now and was at Mah the other day. Falling in love with the Tiger 800 and 1200. Was hoping to get some feedback from you guys before I make any buying decision. Hoping you can give me some input on the following.

1. How much does it cost to maintain regularly? Regular servicing costs? Labour? Parts? My concern is that if the technology is too specialised, maintenance and repair are going to be a nightmare. I keep hearing very conflicting responses. Some say the in-line 3 is Japanese technology and is stable. Others say the Tigers are giving problems after going on the road for a while.

2. How would the Tigers compare to the V-Strom and BMW GS 800? In terms of performance, fuel consumption and cost of running.

Right now I'm still trying to decide whether to upgrade my bike or keep my Wee and if it's worth it to get a Tiger 800/1200 or a BMW 800 GS. The 1200 GS is too high and too expensive for me.

Looking forward to your view. Thanks!

Have never ridden a continental bike before but this bike is shiok!!!!

Every gear is powerful, it's creamy smooth even when switching gears on such a new bike.

Bike looks heavy but when riding it feels light even on small roads like carparks. Don't feel the weight. Cruise control is easy to use and heavenly! Have not figured out traction control yet.

Though big, I did not find it difficult to manoeuvre in between cars. Bike has adjustable height so not too high... in fact it is shorter than the Versys I ride... The only complain I have now is that the bike feels hot and when I took out my two side boxes, there are obtrusive brackets / stopper that needs to be unscrewed to be removed...

But have ridden only less than 200km so hard to tell you more.

Heard form the salesman, servicing is charged about $100+ / $200. He said Triumph's been around 20 years and has no major problem from riders + no problems with parts. Also according to the mechanic, servicing for Explorer is about 10 000km instead of the 16 000km posted on the net due to the weather condition here.

Went to Bike Production to see the Cross Tourer and was okay with it, then went to Mah to take a look at the Explorer and it was love at first sight.

Bike price on the road with insurance and all accessories - $40k.

$2k for three boxes.

Was considering BMW GS, cost difference a few k only but am very put off by the reviews on BMW's servicing ($70/hr not including parts) ... cannot sustain the high maintenance cost.

So now am a happy man with my Triumph Explorer!

Hi bro

Thanks for the response. Certainly very positive. Backside itchy now lah. Still hearing mixed thing about the Tiger. I sat on the 800 and 1200 and both feel very comfortable. Right now just wish I could test-ride these 2 and see how they feel. If I had my way, I'd for the 1200. That's a serious touring machine right there. My Wee-Strom is doing fine and is very reliable. Done about 12000 km and no problems so far - just that the FC is not as good as I had hoped (only about 19-20 km/l for normal riding and 22 km/l when touring).

BTW, I also heard that the latch that connects the boxes to the bike are not as solid as H&B and that the Triumph boxes are also not as robust. How're your boxes working out?

Any feedback from other bros here? Any mechanical or electrical problems? $40k is a serious commitment and I want to make sure my next bike doesn't spend most of the time in the workshop.

Thanks and ride safe!

Hi bro,

True the box is not as hard as the H & B ones but they looked good. Actually my H&B Junior series are not as good, my two side boxes flood every time it rains... brought them to the dealer twice already... still floods a bit. Have not rode Ex long enough and can't quote comment on hardiness of boxes...only worry that if I drop the bike, the box might crash cause it's not hard enough.

With a full tank 20 litre, the fuel warning light lit up after traveling 260km... from the display shown I have 80km of fuel left... don't know how that measures to your Wee Storm but I think main diff is the feel of the bike... Ex is very powerful and a really comfortable bike. Hope this helps.

Take care.

Hi,

I owned the launch model for slightly more than a month and had clocked almost 3000km. Allow me to give a short review/comparison on it since i did own a GSA for 2yrs and 4mths (49+K km), to be fair.

Suspension:- It certainly loses to the GSA. Nothing beats having the para- and tele-lever types of suspension. They certainly make a lousy rider (read: me) looks like a seasoned rider. Whilst going up Fraser/Cameron, the "dive" during hard-braking can be felt on the TE, while on the GSA, the bike barely dived.

Fuel consumption:- Clocking ard 16km/L during local riding with its 20L tank. Tank is rather small, so can't really pump song song gao jurong when filling up in Msia. Same FC as the GSA. Reaching Ayer Keroh as a first stop isnt much of an issue.

Power:- The figures dont lie. The 135hp can certainly be felt. Of course, its more powerful than the other 110hp beast. Top-end power is very much available with the TE, where it lacked in the GSA. But to be fair, this is characteristic of all in-line engine bikes (top-end power delivery) and not boxers.

Weight:- The CG of the GSA is certainly felt at a lower position than the TE when making a turn/cornering.

Features:- Cruise-control, traction control (switchable), tire-pressure monitoring system, ABS (switchable) came with the bike.

Comfort:- Plush seat but the standard is a bit lower than the GSA. I am only 180cm in height, hence i ordered the "high" seat but it has yet to arrive.

The launch model came with certain features/accessories that are termed as extras. I got the touring screen, engine crash bars, aluminium sump guard, fog-lights, handle-bar protectors and the tire-pressure monitoring system. I dont tink i missed anything out from here.

I got the headlight protector for free.

My 3 boxes which i ordered from Chiap Lee have yet to arrive. I didnt go with the OEM boxes, but instead decided on the alu Trax (SW-Motech).

Brilliant comparison.I share e same experience too.e handling of a TE can never be matched with a horizontally opposed twin engine confirguration thanks to e low CG and inteliigent suspension system of e GS.

Don't ever fall for their words (yem_paul and his gang)... For they reek of the untruth.

Lets ride together one day, even if its to Bedok.
