Probably half to 1 hour if all parts are there, check with your bike shop first before going. Make sure all parts are there, or at least order them in advance.

I change when there is knocking sound and when it affects the pick up.

Hi,

Is there any recommendation on how long until u need to change the chain and sprocket? Is there any guide/indication that you need to change?

Thanks.

CHAINS SHOULD BE CHANGED WHEN THEY WEAR OUT...

check for chain wear...at the rear sprocket...pull chain away from sprocket..

new chains there should be no movement..

old chains when you can pull 5mm away from the sprocket...time to change..

conventional wisdom...2 sets of chains for 1 set of sprockets...

conventional wisdom...chage chains twice then replace sprockets...l

Shouldnt it be that chain and sprockets be changed at the same time so that they wear evenly.

By putting a new chain with worn sprockets, the chain will be worn very quickly to match with the sprockets wear amount.

yeah, worn chain will wear out new sprockets faster, worn sprockets will wear out new chains faster.

since these 2 pieces of metal are in constant contact at high speeds. best is to change them both together when 1 is worn.

Lube your chain regularly and you can prolong your chain life.

2 sets of chains for 1 set of sprockets....this is the conventional wisdom...

if you want to change the whole set..good for your bike ...bad for your wallet.

Changing of chain and sproket is purely by visual and not by mileage. So it hard to tell you when is the appopriate mileage to do so.

In general, you can look at the indicator on the swingarm. Usually when you tighten the chain, you will need to pull back the wheel/axle. There is usually an indicator on the swingarm to show you how much you have pulled back. Once you have reached it limit, you should change the chain. And by right you should change chain and sprocket at the same time. This is to avoid one worn item accelerating the wear of a new item.

There is another senario where you may want to change the chain/sproket early. That is when your chain developed dead link or your sproket teeth is getting sharp.

Hope it helps.

what's a dead link? @kinwei

Dead links is developee when the O or X ring is spoilt and unable to contain the grease inside the roller/pin. You will noticed links where it will stuck at one position but not straight. when this happen, the dead link will be the tight point. So if you adjust your chain based on the tight point, the other rest of the chain will be loose. If you tigthen the chain based on the rest of the chain, the tigth point will be too tigth. Either way, your chain wear will accelerate. Hope my explanation help.

dead links = kinked chains...a very bad condition. chain failure most probably from this dead link..

One of the causes is using high pressure water jet on the chain.

Just go to those jb bike wash, these powerful jets will destroy the chain and the wheel bearings. Furthermore, the chemical they used could also be solvent base.

in normal wear and tear ...5 years unbelievable..

check for chain wear...and decide whether need to chage...

the only chains that can last that long ...was one with a chain oiler..at 20k/ year..
