my odo recently cleared 440,000km.....although it seems to be on the high side, but when divided by the age of the car (it was "born" in 1991), it's only 2000+km per month.

I see other cars of equal age having mileage of less than 200,000km.....got a nagging suspicion their meters were either tampered with or actually "clear meter" cars :giddy:

any opinions about this?

cheers.

Commonly done by dishonest car dealers and sometimes car owners.

dont just take things at face value as usual .

look and assess before buying.

i do only 1000km per month which means 12000km per year.

I understand that is half of a "low mileage" car usually advertised in the papers. So my car is super low mileage.

Anyone wants to buy a Super Low Mileage Volvo S40 2.4i (only one with Moonroof in Singapore) with 18" rims and sports tyres?

so in your opinions , is my mileage excessive? :cheeky:

How about the frame and body panels?

Are they still in good condition after so many years ?

The engine may also be quite worked having done 440,000km

Be always prepared to do an overhaul.

mechanic checked.....frame no prob....but i can feel abit of "flex" when doing sharp corners....or isit the soft suspension? cant really tell, not a car expert. To me, it's just a vehicle keke.

yup...im prepared already...got the lobang for a totally renewed engine from US (where the nissan GA16DE engine is plentiful in their sentras and datsuns)...quite cheap....less than US$2K it's practically new actually.

any of your old cars ever had such mileage? actually more than a year ago i chose a car not based on mileage but on how well it seemed to be kept....because i tried others with lower mileage but in much more horrid condition.

to comfort myself, i always remember my friend's words, "if it can survive 440,000km, what's stopping it from going for 1 million?" kekeke.

Body flex is something that occurs in all cars because metal is a ductile material. To reduce the effect, you can install anti-roll/sway bars etc to reinforce the chassis.

Changing the engine might require a lot of hassle in paperwork unless you intend to take your chances.

As long as the engine has been taken care of well and routinely checked, there's no reason why it will give up on you.

Not really, my second cars all had mileage below 200,000km

but you are right to choose a car not just at mileage simply.

usually old car in singapore the market consumers dont look for mileage. usually just engine condition and chassis integrity.

btw wat car is yours maybe we all can help?

chassis flex is inherent in ALL cars. main thing is your car alignment. does it pull abruptly?

that's partly the point about the whole post....i suspect many 2nd hand cars had their odos manipulated....how to be so low?

my car's a 1991 Nissan Presea....when i was car-hunting a year ago, test drove an old ESi with odo 200,000km....waliao eh engine rotten like sh!t....impossible lah....it was a 1992 car...that means every month around 1200km only meh?

anyway, i read somewhere of a Saab owner in USA who drove the car until 999,999km without an engine breakdown at all (of course other minor parts got replace lah).....the car is now in a Saab museum and is used for publicity....and he was given a new car free.

if i ever hit 999,999km maybe i write to Nissan Corp kekeke just kiddin.

its not the mileage that kills engines! its the TYPE of driving. if city driving (VERY high stress) more often than not the owner will NOT increase the service intervals. This results in accelerated engine wear. so 200k kms for the dead honda engine is a possibility. typically the dealers dont clock the odometer. However a dead odometer might have been replaced by a newer, probably lower mileage odometer.

Basically for all COE cars, a budget of 3-5k is essential for a FULL rebuild of ALL the parts like engine lah, suspension lah, fuel injection/carburetors, lights, door motors, electrics etc. no easy way out unfortunately must just bite the bullet if u want to drive an old car.

ESIs a hit with boy racers who like to soup it up...

even if they cant beat the car they are trying to race...they would have floored the accelerator...

a rotten engine in a terrible state is not surprising...
