RC - Session 3

The next day, made the way down back to BBDC for RC to keep as current as I can.

First the group were told to do 2 to 3 laps of warm up round the circuit (Admittedly I love these) and then to do the plank / slalom and e-brake.

After 2 laps decided to try the plank - manage to go through the plank, but here is the thing, it’s about 5.8 seconds - no good.

For the slalom, it was okay - so will skip description

The e-brake; the main thing is not to prepare clutch in…. When coming to a stop.

In the course of the next few practices, for about 4 rounds, went off the plank once, but that was because was trying to slow the bike down by clutching in fully; found out that was a big “no go”. The main issue for the rest of the time, the timing was below 6 seconds, so it was the main challenge.

After that, students went to practice the right turn and then the slope area. So, after a couple of practices, onto the next courses.

The next were the S course and crank course. Had to keep a look up to make sure that no vehicles were in front of the entrance of the S-course and the bikes have to stop at the exit of the S-course. There after, one has to check the blind spot when turning into the entrance of the crank course.

After clearing the crank course, I spoke to the instructors and told them with my obsession of the plank. As minor as some reading here might think, I just want to love the course and will invest effort master it. The reason is, I believe that clutch control is a must and only with that, then we can be good riders. So.. I had unbelievably great instructors who explained tried to correct my errors. I’m definitely not “solved” the issue and will still go back for more RCs, so you all here might be bored reading about “RCs”.

By the end of the session, my left hand had a blister from trying clutch control and I’m already looking forward to my next RC in between my next lesson of 7.01. :)

I’m still trying ….

6.01 - road; night ride.

On a Friday, went for the first ride outside the circuit. Yes, this was a road lesson where the students were introduced to the real world of the vehicles. The first on-road session is a night session, hence there at night.

As usual, we had to produce our IDs and the BBDC app on the phone. In addition, we had to show the screenshot of the PDL to the instructors.

The briefing started by instructors telling us the formation. The formation is where students will dominate the lane by having a staggered formation with instructors at the front and the rear. There would be a total of 8 riders, hence 6 students.

Real life skills were taught. First, we were told to get the raincoats and taught to fold them and secure them on the bike! Life skill! (Don’t laugh, you season bikers out there)

Once we secured the raincoats onto the bike. The instructors gave a run down of what to expect on the road and the safety aspect of how we students, have to use our judgement and be able to respond to road situations.

Once the briefing was over, we were told to get on the bike and form up. The two instructors took care of the group really well, ensuring our safety by making sure, the students could get out of the gates of BBDC and finally ride!

Once out of the gates, we all rode like Casey Stoner!…. NOT!

The instructors said that they wanted us to go faster than that of the circuit and try up to gear 5. Unfortunately, only managed to reach gear 4. I think some are still apprehensive to go at higher speeds…

Overall, the experience was great…. The main thing was to keep a lookout for all the entrances/exits of where there could be possible vehicles. During my ride, I saw a cyclist that just went out and didn’t see the bikes riding in formation.

We made a couple of rounds riding in traffic around Bukit Batok. It was quite fun and we did stop occasionally at the side to receive briefing of what had to be done, and what had to be corrected.

By the end of the session, it was about 11:10pm and while tired… was pretty happy. Will see 7.01 next where there will be introduction to the test route.

6.01 is fun but stressful for various reasons 😅

yes the riders tend to go quite slowly and bunch up. My group struggled with the concept of riding formation and took a very long time to understand  and get into the zig-zag formation.

yep, many road hazards in that area. Gotta keep a lookout for them, especially during the final evaluation and TP test. I found it easier to do that when i kept a clear distance behind the rider ahead of me. 2sec gap is not sufficient for me.

oh i was wrong in my earlier post where i said they teach u-turn at 6.01. I think it's only done at 7.01 (daytime)

So ....

Stop staring at the kerb 😂

Or you will kiss it one day 🤣

agreed.. been there done that.. first week with my bike some more, super slow speed.. 😂

thankfully it's school hols... otherwise the schedule is quite grueling

Look far and not near.. same concept as figure 8 and any life skills set..

one fall, pick up and continue again. that's what kids do.. until they learn how to run... ;)

@Janeoh Yes, the play pen is enjoyable.

Let's put things in perspective. It's not about getting the bike, it's the privilege to ride and enjoy it. :)

Don't give up and use the experience of getting a license to show the young ones that you can preserve can do it, because if you don't believe that you can, it's so wrong.

We all have doubts and challenges.

Please don't let this set back put you off on this journey and hope you will continue with all the "L"s here in this community.

Furthermore, the community in this forum is generous in sharing information and moral support.

Let's all ride on this journey together.

It's on the palm between the thumb and the left index finger, not very pain.
Gloves fit really well :) I think it was more of the act of using the clutch...

You are right about the zig-zag formation, but can't blame most of the riders as this is their very first license.

Keeping a distance is important and you are really right about pointing it out!

I did "learn" u-turn on my very first RC. :D since most were going for TP, they learnt it, so I just did it while in the circuit with them, was "okay", but of course, need to learn which broken line to stop on and the arc of turn.

Why so many RCs? One, I love riding... and two.. I want to master those courses that are "hit or miss" aka inconsistent... i.e the plank.

Hence, will go for it as much as I can before I book the TP.

Can't go for TP first, at least 2 more lessons.

However, would like to enjoy the journey and learn more of the skills of riding.

It's a constant and dynamic experience... same with driving... ever changing ... :) I enjoy doing both..

It is ok to fall below 6 sec for plank. The demerit point is 4 points i think. Just remember for TP u can sacrifice some of the points as long as they are not immediate failures. While u can keep practicing and trying to get it perfect but no need to be too hard on yourself if you cant. U only need 18 points to pass

A cheat code that the instructors taught us during road TP is to keep a SUPER wide gap from the previous rider in case the rider infront bobo and cause u to fail the test. During my TP, my previous rider failed cos he did some mistakes and fortunately i didnt follow too closely to him. He failed to look out for pedestrian when turning back to the gate n that caused him to fail. Just pretend to move off slowly like pretending to check for traffic etc. Stop line is a good way to draw the distance oso.

i'm no expert but the pain that starts to occur a few days after the incident might be nerve endings growing back. Which is a positive sign.

haha.. icic.. I just take the bare minimum to faster clear to TP and out my own bike that time.. same with 2A.. cuz even if fail, also need to go for CR/RC. But usually 2 CR before TP. 1 CR before assessments.

LOL.. I had about 3 falls during my 2B.. but all are minor except one in Malaysia.

1 - look at kerb, fall at less then 5km/h.. wondering why I didn't bring my leg down.. My leg was "caught" in between and I can't get up.. passerby help to push my bike up and I managed to get up.

2 - not really a fall, stationary.. but my jeans get caught on the footrest.. bike 45 degree down.. I can choose to let my bike down and damage the fairing or I use my leg to "catch" my bike to prevent scratches.. (stay at that weird position for about 10min before I saw my neighbour who's also a biker and he ran over to "hold my bike" while I get out of that position.)

3. A group of 5 bikers (intend to do 5 nation ride (Singapore/Malaysia/Thailand/Laos and Cambodia).. But at Malaysia, one biker do a "need to pump petrol" hand sign, so we told all bikers via hand signs, one biker show some weird hand signs and next moment he brake very fast while I'm right behind him.. horn but no use and I jam brake while he hit my handlebar with his tail and I flip downwards immediately. (Realised he doesn't understand hand sign and his mirror cannot see rear bikes, extremely piss off at that moment and I give up on that Charity ride, pass the leadership to another person who's a driver and I u-turn home).. Still regret that I didn't complete this journey and now it's my bucket list.. haha.. *I have pass a manual for hand signs for bikers and told them pump petrol is a must to know.. yet.. some people choose to ignore all instructions. 😂

Thank you very much! I rode conservatively and kept a distance from the biker in front...

I need to get it right and hope to learn it well, so that in the future, if 2A, will be able to stay on the plank for a longer period instead of just getting the 4 points; instructor said, don't waste that four points! :D

Yes, you are right on keeping a distance, and will take note of that when I go out again on the road.

haha.. icic.. I just take the bare minimum to faster clear to TP and out my own bike that time.. same with 2A.. cuz even if fail, also need to go for CR/RC. But usually 2 CR before TP. 1 CR before assessments.

Since I can't book TP test yet... I told myself that I would just go for as much RC as possible... I do enjoy the ride even if it takes about 1h 30mins of traveling (driving) time counting both ways.

Will just keep trying on the plank ... don't stop.. :D

during my 6.01, half of them beat a red light and the other half (me inclusive) failed to give way at a zebra crossing 😂 Somehow all still were cleared to proceed to 7.01

a few of us in the group already had class 3 licence so no excuses really

Wah.. so nice.. the instructor keep fail mi cos i nv stop at the stop line n when turning, i will go straight into the left lane instead of right cos it was from 1 lane to 2.. then i keep forgetting cos habit.. 😕

my midcut boots also supposed to be waterproof but got completely soaked while riding in heavy rain for 2hr+ during my Oct bike trip. i realised it was too short... my rain pants not long enough to cover the top so perhaps water entered from the top opening. When standing, it's covered but not when the knee is bent (sitting position)

i planning to buy those long rain covers for boots. Also ordered taller height boots for future bike trips.

actually no matter how, rain will still get in.. unless you wearing those touring boots.. (very very uncomfortable and hard to change gears)..

those has no laces.. only zip.. I use to wear that.. but legs still can grow over the years.. haha

yeah i ordered touring boots... but i feel you are right.. no matter how, water will still find it's way in 😂

i think still more comfortable than ADV/MX boots which my friends use for long trip. Will break in my new boots before the trip.

and once they get wet, it's almost impossible to dry "waterproof" footwear overnight.

my back up plan is plastic bags in-between socks and wet boots

1) wear new dry socks

2) wrap foot in plastic bag

3) wear smelly wet boot

You prob need a shoe with higher cut? I have a mid cut type of hiking boots that's water proof so its like the perfect riding shoe once you put on the rain coat and pants. Its actually nicer to ride in the rain than the super hot sun... cooler and more thrilling somewhat... just make sure you aren't going beyond your comfortable speed i guess? hehe... And a good set of tires that is rated well for rain always helps.

omg... i tried plastic bags before... i personally think it can be dangerous if it isn't worn properly. Especially if you are riding chain bikes. Personally i won't recommend plastic bags... those rain boots aren't too ex. Shopee is selling those silicon pull over shoes too. I'm thinking of trying those out sometimes.

hahaa... reminds me of those days where we do river crossing during bmt and all the boots are like water buckets...

plastic bags dangerous because sticking out on the top ? agreed - i'll tuck them in. Used to do this during NS time

i ordered those rain boot covers too. Today the seller cancelled it because don't have my size. Will order from another seller.

wait.. your time BMT got river crossing? my time we did river crossing only after BMT.

Good to know... I didn't do cos no time. But it's just doing it's thing. Since last night started to hurt esp from "resting" level to vertical (even straightened leg on chair then put down to walk).

dunno should be happy, got feeling back again or worried (infected). Googling like mad hahahaha

i don't know if I'll continue. I'll take this break to see how. My schedule for next year is starting to fill up and I really cannot afford down time. Maybe take up knitting. Hahahahah Very fortunate that this "injury" is still a mobile one. A few drs who saw me yesterday also said if I have time I should graft...

Sorry to hear about this, just checked this forum today!!! Sounds super painful and serious, best to follow your gut instincts and what your body is telling you.. I believe the time will come for you to pick up where you left off once you’re fully recovered! Take care!

(Knitting is fun but need lots of patience) 🤣

Hello All!!!

Just wanted to share the good news that I’ve finally passed my L3 after so so many tries (>10 times)!!!

I think i was lucky to have a lenient instructor cause my timing was:

1st test - 13s

2nd test - 12s

3rd test - 10s (Before yellow line throttle up and tried not to close throttle)

I adopted and practiced the way every kind soul taught and advised here, it was really helpful 😆 Finally going to L4, hope it’s gonna be smooth sailing and not much retries too 😅

Thanks again!!
