Hi FZ1S Riders,

Need some help on a technical issue, would appreciate if some old birds can guide me in my predicament.

Currently I'm riding a 07 Cobalt Blue FZ1s, which is already pass 140k. Recently I had done my valve adjustments and change my timing chain at Bike Werks in Feb 16, full servicing done for a pre tour in May. While touring for a near 1500 km from Singapore to Phuket, I suddenly had a problem with a sudden jerking in my throttle as if something had cut off my fuel. The jerking was not as if you had a reserve tank and suddenly you realised you are out of gas, instead it totally cut off my power as well.

Can you imagine the freaked out face I had as the bike stalled when I was climbing up Patong Hill with 40l full of luggage??:slap forehead:

So I switched off the ignition, switched it on back and start it up. It revs! Gear 1, moved off and it shut off again. Thinking at first it was due to the steep incline climb, I persevered but once up the hill and on the way downhill, it didn't proved as what I had thought. i kept switching it off and on till I reached my destination. Panic overcame me, knowing that I was alone in this tour, had no one to look out for and in a different country where the motor tiam might as well skin me alive for a mechanical check or even an impromptu diagnosis.

Spend the night in my hotel searching for reliable bike shops in phuket who knows a thing or two about big bikes and found one which was called Southern Big Bikes. How appropriate. The next day I went over by renting a scooter and the owner was nice enough to ask me to bring over my bike. After searching for the source of the problem, the owner Mr Bang, concluded that it could be the fuel pump relay?? Whereas I was thinking about spark plugs, plugs being wet, magnetic coil or even rectifier. But Mr Bang rebutted with me with his conclusion and said that I need to rev more than 5k rpm and don't waste money on repair or towing back to Singapore. He said, take a rest for another day, try to speed up and hopefully you can get back to Singapore safely.

And that's exactly what I did. Along the way back to Singapore, never had a problem at all until I was riding unto AYE where 90km/h is the norm.. That's where it started again, sudden feeling of jerkiness on the throttle and finally to a stand still after Clementi Flyover. Managed to tow back to my bikeshop, start the engine and ride off the next day without a hitch.

Now after two months of riding, this problem has started again. Initial start route, Tampines to Bukit Merah and in between it stalled twice. Before I start to go over to any motortiam and tell this elaborate story to them and get ripped off for maybe a small matter, please oh please share with me if there's any FZ1s rider who had the same experience or problem before?

Many Thanks.

I had similar problem with my old fazer 6. Planet motor found out that it was due to old wiring problems to the red cut off button at the handle bar. They rewire to bypass the button and problem solved. Alternatively can order a new set but cost a lot.

Intermittent engine-cutout problems in my experience are usually electrical.

You could start with a simple solution that worked for me: spray WD40 down your ignition barrel, with a cloth underneath to catch what flows out. Run the key in and out, turn it off and on while flushing repeatedly with WD40 to clean out anything that could be in there causing a bad connection. Finally spray with some electrical contact cleaner (available at any DIY or hardware store).

You could try the same with your engine kill switch.

A bad connection in either of these would cause your engine to cut out. Of course, it could be something deeper in the wiring as well.

Another question: What are the other symptoms when your engine cuts out? Do your dashboard lights and meter stay on? Or does everything shut off completely?

Assuming the lights are on, does the engine crank when you press the starter? Or no response at all?
