2day, my FZ6 fails mi.

did some self-tests, batt spoil.

cannot hold its charge:

reading 12.2~12.5V before & during idle.

maintain 3-4k rev, reading shows ~12.7V (Rectifier is working)

but strange part is, all my lights (including Fog light) is working, horn's fine. just tat it won't crank to start.

i did took out the batt & charge it @ moto shop.

den i put it back, IT CAN START.

but after a few tries (start/off, start/off. . .) it die again.

no sign of FI error on my speedo.

starter is cfm working, can tell from the sound.

for the past 1yr+ of riding it, it'll usually start within 1-2 secs.

but for the past mth, it takes up to 4-5 secs to start up.

*many thanks to James again for helping mi out thru phone.

i'll go & get a new batt @ LAB tml & update the result here.

LollyPoP, your step-by-step diagnosis with a multimeter is most recommendable!! But please note that you cannot dictate if the battery is "dead" or "almost dead" by reading the voltage when its idling, running, throttling etc. In short, once you press the red start button, nothing you see on the multimeter will translate to battery health.

What is critical in your measurement is to obtain :-

resting voltage of the batt.

Resting voltage is the voltage that a battery is able to sustain after leaving it for a prolonged period of time without any input (charge) or output (load). Resting voltage in turn translate to the ultimate health of your batt. :thumb:

For modern Fi bikes, a minimum (varies from bike to bike) resting voltage require is generally 12.0V~12.3V. Older carb versions can even start with 11.6V~11.8V!!. This is commonly so, as once you turn your key to "ON", the Fi bikes' ECU is already self-checking mode & also starts the fuel pump -> voltage already drops even before you ignite the bike, hence requiring a higher resting voltage.

A very "unhealthy batt" (below 12.0V maybe?) on a bike with good charging system (magnetic/alternator coil & rectifier & good wiring/connections) can show an idle of 13.0~13.7V, & a max charging voltage of 14.5V~15.5V on your multimeter, depending on the make/model of bike. Once you leave it parked overnight & crank the very first time the next morning, viola, weak cranks or no cranks. Why?

Cranking involves a 1xlarge amount of current drawn (20A~30A...) which requires a high voltage to "pump" it through the exact same resistance in your bike. As long your "resting voltage" is not enough, you're stranded! (Of course push start gets you to the next destination:P )

Hope the above helps in future analysis... coz batts are expensive!!! :giddy:

good info put up.. out of curiousity, how low a charging voltage indicates insufficient charging and warrants attention? I always thought that as long as the idle/revving charge is 13 volts and above its sufficient to charge the batt and continued usage is ok. Anything below 13 volts necessitates attention on the rec/coil. Any opinions?

P-plate should be an attitude to safety and riding. There's always more to learn.

How low the read-put = insufficient charging voltage? Simple.

Flip your manual, it will indicate a few specs info depending on make of bike. (also depending where at which point of the whole wiring loop you tap with your multimeter)

AC Magneto (alternator) : 14V, with 420W at 5k rpm

Rectifier/Regulator : regulated DC = 14.1V~14.9V

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So in my case (my own bike specs mentioned above), I made my 10 bar LED voltmeter to start lighting up min 12.0~12.3, 12.3V~14.5V on another 6 bar, the last 2 bars is >15V.

So all need is to look at bars & colors:

0 = uh oh... time to save for a new batt

2 = :thumb:

3~8 = charging is healthy W/O overcharging

>8 = I better check my stuffs!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If you you have your own voltmeter (mostly digital numbers or analog needle, but i choose not to... coz it doens't makes sense to my usage, & my is finger size :p), you can read off your own readings based on your own bike's make/model. :p

Generally if your readings shows abnormality or lower than spec'ed, you can troubleshoot systematically (batt->connector->rectifier->connector->alternator)

;)

** note if u own a very aged bike with new alternator & rectifier, your charging voltage readings in most cases will not be optimal unless you change your whole wiring loom + connectors. Well, all hardware ages too! If they are optiml on your multimeter.... that will be great!

Thank You.
