I'm having a strange problem on my Gen1 FZ1000. Some days the gearshift starts to stick, and it take a lot of effort to change gears. The next day it's completely smooth again. This happens even when the bike has been warmed up and running for a while, and it's erratic - it comes and goes.

Any idea what the issue could be, or what I can do about it?

Oh crap :faint:

A few more questions then: what's the normal life of a clutch plate, how much does it cost to change, and where's a good place to do it?

I am hoping to leave my bike at Sporting this weekend for valve clearance, might as well ask him to do it at the same time?

Actually, my engine oil is a bit over-filled right now. My gear shaft gasket was spoilt, so I got a leak.. and when I topped up afterwards, I ended up putting in a little too much. Will the problem be improved by letting out some of the oil?

err..not sure how u wanna drain out some oil..bit tricky rite?

You can try and see how it works out.. but even if it does u'll need to change dat gasket soon bro.. dowan to end up with low EO while riding.

Oh yeah, the gasket is changed already. Topped up the oil after changing.

I have drained oil from my bike before... it's just a little messy, not too bad :D

since you are going to push in your bike to sporting this weekend, let them check for you

Yeah, I spoke to Meng Tong about this on the phone. At least let him take a look. But the prices are killer man... $200 for valve clearance, $100++ for timing chain, $200 for clutch plate :faint:

sounds about rite.. wat are u using as comparison?

Well, I was mainly shocked because I didn't expect it to be so much :p

But I did compare afterwards, got these parts prices from Auto Machinery (on the phone):

Clutchplate + Gasket = $108 + $9 = $117 (MengTong quoted ~$200, which seems like a lot of labour charge, especially since he's doing it together with the valve clearance)

Timing chain + Tensioner + gasket = $45 + $70 = $115 (MengTong quoted "$100+", not sure how much the "+" comes to)

Ah Beng at Bikeworkz quoted $120 for valve clearance, $120 for clutch plate. But his quote for timing chain was waaayyy off the mark - $375 o_O

I'm ok to spend the extra to have Meng Tong do the valve clearance (because of his reputation), but I'll probably do the clutch place at Bikeworkz then. But before that I'll try draining some oil and see if it helps :D

the place where i park is parallel with cars. 6-8 lots blocked by 2 pillars. if a car is to knock into my bike, he would be either toppling over the whole row, or to bang into the pillar. so i believe its an act of vandalism
