The new base version of the 999 has the old 999R engine (140hp), while the Aprilla is still using the ageing TL-R engine, about 120+ hp.

I think if you want value for money, get the Aprilla RSV-Factory. At 32k, its incredibly good value for money compared to the equivalent Ducati 999S.

i was wondering...off-topic...y does aprilia still use the Suzuki engine(TL-R suzuki rite?)? is it a case of...if it aint spoilt...dont fix it?

TL-R? i thought their engine from Rotax not Suzuki.

if u ask me go for Aprilia, looks cool, looks nice, less noisy, and im sure more comfy and rideable than the ducati. And the ducati costs several extra grand over it.

ever heard of ducrapi.com ?

Better to be loved, than to hate...

Theres just something very special about Ducati's I can't put my finger on. Maybe its the sound? The color? The name itself?

If you can afford it, and if you love it, then by all means get one of them. If value for money is your piority but must get a V-twin sports bike, then go get a VTR or TLR. For the price of a new Ducati 999, you can get a VTR AND an TLR, plus enough aftermarket parts to turn both of them into seriously fast and well handling machines.

Ducrapi.com only echos the possible horrors of owning a high performance, high tech bike, not limited to Ducatis alone. It also goes to show the passion and loyalty to the brand. If a Japanese sports bike had such problems, would the owner go setup a website? I don't think so, he/she will most probably just sell it and get another from one of the other japanese "big four".

Could anyone compare between the 2?...

Price-wise...how much do they cost(basic versions of each)...

performance-wise?..which one is better?

A 999S costs something like $45-48k the last I remembered. The RSV Factory gives much much better value at $32-$35k with it's radial brakes, OZ wheels and full Ohlins setup.

Exactly why Ducati is so much sought after is precisely because of it's price. It's always so expensive so exclusitivity is guaranteed. It's a good bike yes, but a stock CBR1000 and R1 is anytime as good or even better. That has been what I've been reading in the British bike magazines anyway.

When one has money, it's no longer about having the fastest bike. It's about having brand name, about being exclusive, about having an attitude, etc, etc. Very emotional things. If you paid $45k for a bike, electrical faults are intepreted as the bike having an 'attitude' rather than a problem. And if it can't start after leaving it for 2 weeks, same thing, the bike has an attitude. You adapt and accept the bike's behaviour. Never mind if your wrist feels like being broken 10 times over when you ride a Ducati > half hour in traffic. Never mind if the heat from the radiator cooks your balls as well. It's a Ducati :)

Anyway, I hope Ducati riders here don't take offence. As I said, it's a very emotional thing.

For me, given the choice, I will choose the RSV. Personal taste. I feel you're just paying way too much premium for a Ducati with equivilant performance and exclusitivity....

Is it just me, or does the RSV look so much like the Honda VTR?

Apparently so but not my reason for choosing it. Last I heard, there's only 2 RSV Factory on the road. Ducati 999 at least 10 on the road. Probably nearing 15...

I've seen, touched, carassed, hugged, sat on an RSV Factory and Ducati 999S before. Sexy italian bikes :D

The RSV has all the parts, matched only by the 999S (only just), which costs more than 10k more. Very good value IMO! :thumb:

But for the 35k price tag of an RSV, you can get a TLR or VTR and mod them to embarass both the Italian bikes, but still have spare cash for a 2nd transport bike, and probably some spare change for insurance, road tax, petrol etc....

It's a love it or hate it thingy.......rode one before???? :cheeky: It's addictive, and makes you go all out somehow......When you make it (at the tracks), you felt achievement. When you break it, you dun really regret it, laugh it off and then worry how you are gonna pay for this coming repair bill.......borrow from Mum or credit card????

A mech fren dun like Inline engines, however, after riding a MV Agusta, he sheepishly tells us he kindda like this perticuliar Inline bike......it's just different in the feel somehow. Maybe the Italian virus again..... o_O
